? from a xc coach

Have you ever started running with a new team/coach, for example, jr. high to high school or high school to college and got really frustrated because they tried to change the way you do things?

Re: ? from a xc coach
Yes, I had 3 different XC coaches in college and each of them had their own way of doing things. Unless you're willing to do a lot of stuff on your own to make up for whatever you feel you're missing with the new coach (that's what I did) you kind of have to accept whatever new program the coach is trying to implement or fit into the existing program yourself if you're moving to a new level. If you're really concerned about the way your coach does things ask them (in a calm and non-emotional sort of way) why they do things the way they do them. Any decent coach will be able to give you their training philosophy and an overall plan for the season. At this point you still may not agree with what they are doing, but you'll know where they are coming from and why they're doing what they're doing.

Yes I have. Running with a new coach now. And I find it very frustrating currently, I disagree with everything suggested or the way things are run, until my coach got really ****** off at me sighed. Yet I know it's for the good of the team and myself etc. Yeah talking with the coach would help you understand things better. I agree, wish I did it earlier in the season.

Re: ? from a xc coach
um...this topic is called "question from a xc coach." why are you guys giving her/him advice on what to SAY to a coach when she/he IS the coach??

back to the question...my coach now actually ran for my old coach about 10 years ago...so she kinda "observed" at practices for a while, and then she coached w/ my old coach, and then she just took over track (not xc), and now shes the head coach of everything. the whole transition took 2 years...so we kinda got a chance to get used to her and her way of doing things. its still weird...she a lot younger, and has so much more energy than my old coach...she runs with us and everything...but she also expects a lot more of us. sometimes i dont agree with what she does (ie, shes having us do our hardest workouts on the days before dual meets because she doesnt think any other teams will pose a threat...) but i figure she knows more about running than i do, even if she doesnt know as much as my old coach...

The topic says from a coach, but the text of the post implies that this person IS NOT the coach and has no control over the changes.

I am just trying to help her see that things can be different and not wrong, and help her to empathize with runners who may be getting frustrated. I was just looking for support from all of you so I didn't start to think I was way off. Even though my question was originally misunderstood, every response I have gotten has been really helpful, so keep them coming. <HR>

Sorry for the misunderstanding, are you the head coach or is she? If you are the head coach then she needs to get in line with what you want to do it is your program and needs to go the way you want it to go. If she is the head coach then same thing, you can suggest different ways of doing things, but ultimately it is her program. If it is a co-coach sort of deal, then there needs to be a compromise. In my experience when people think that their way is the only way they either have a great fear of being wrong or have an enormous ego. If you can somehow convince this other coach that it was her idea to change something you'll be on your way. Of course she'll take the credit for whatever success results from your methods, but that doesn't really matter as long as the kids are the ones who benefit.

Re: ? from a xc coach
I have multiple coaches, and I like the variety on how they do things. Since I'm a mid distance sprinter, I work out with the sprinters and distance runners,(on different days), and the coaches have distinct ways of handling practices and philosophy. I like it cuz no two practices are the same.
