Wieght in racing

I'm racing in track this winter and im posting here because i figure you guys are about the same age as me(16). I feel that im too heavy for racing the mile(which im going out for), so im thinking about losing wieght. im 5'6, and i wiegh 147, about what should my goal weight be. I'm trying to get the best possible time so if losing weight is gunna help alot im gunna do it.

is it true that every pound adds on about 2 seconds every quarter mile, i read that somewhere. Or maybe it was 2 seconds per mile, one of those two.

I've never heard anything about that pound=time thing you mentioned, but i could be wrong.

Get to weight that your comfortable with. If you feel that you can smoothly at a weight of 140 or 143 then do it. The weight will come off with training and you'll be much leaner.

Re: Wieght in racing
Everyone is different and has a different weight which is optimal for them at a particular time. If both your nutrition and training are good you'll get to a point where you will be lean (you may even already be there). If you have a few extra lbs b/c your body fat % is to high, then yes dropping some weight would be a good thing.

Re: Wieght in racing
What kind of times can you run now? I guess you're somewhat bigger than most runners but that's not necessarily such a bad thing. I'm a girl, 5'2 and 129...which is like massive compared to everyone else, and I do alright. I'm down from 155 less than a year ago so all I can tell you is running will help you lose weight and losing weight will help you be a better runner. I would suggest focusing completely on your running for now and the weight will take care of itself. Can't tell you what your goal weight should be, don't know how you're built or anything. I'm trying to be about 120 or slightly less and I think that will be my ideal weight even though I'll still be bigger than most of the girls I race against. Use it to your advantage, maybe you're a little stronger than those guys who look like they haven't eaten in 3 years. Good luck with everything

Old man chiming in . . .

First, Listening to the rumors floating around the teen blog is scary sometimes. I wanted to post that I am coach and if you are senior looking for colleges in the New England area, I might be able to help you.

Second, Losing weight is 100% a BAD IDEA!

There is only one way to lose weight in season. Eat less calories than you need. That means you are not fueled properly. No fuel, means the body's engine doesn't go. You can't train hard, you can't race hard.

Eat a healthy diet of carbs, protein, and some fat and let you're body weight land were it does. You are not too heavy for the mile. When I was in college I watch a guy who was 3 inches shorter than me and 10 lbs heavier lap me in the 3k. His mile PR 4:17, mine 4:33.

Focus you efforts on training! The body will take care of itself

Please trust me on this one. I'm a coach, I'm also getting my Masters in advanced level coaching and I work closely with many nutritionists and trainers. I've seen too many people ruin there seasons and there careers trying to get thinner!
