for runners that drink

Do you think that alcohol really affects your performance if you dont drink or get drunk the day or 2 days before a race? I drink...not in big amounts... but i was wondering if it is really gonna affect my track season. If it is really bad...how do u find the discipline to never drink?

Sure it'll affect your performance, but not as much as some would make you think. If you want to not drink just try hanging out more with others who don't drink, it makes it a lot easier than if you were hanging out with your regular drinking buddies.

I don't have any experience with alcohol but I would think the most significant way it would affect your season is if it got you kicked off the team. We have had issues at my shcool and surrounding schools with kids being kicked off of teams for drinking in season. Depends on what the rules are where you live.

I've always loved it when you see your coaches getting drunk at the bars with their athletes.
Nothing beats talking to your coach while the both of you can barely stand up.

My college makes athletes be sober 48 hours before their event, if that's any help

Are you crazy. Of course drinking achohol destroies you. I have a friend i'll call him sam because that is his name. he was once a superfit freshmen. Then he started drinking. he added three mins to his time. I don't know if drinking does this dirrectly but i'm sure it cause it. How do i not drink. Never have. If you don't know what it like your not going to try it. Also i think of my performance, the running high or sleeping.

Re: for runners that drink
I drink quite a bit. Don'tknow if it effects my ability to get better times in general but my guess is no because my 5k, 10k and marathon times are better now than they were when I was 18 (I'm 29).

I know it would be better if I didn't drink. I am trying to cut back.

IMO it DEFINATELY effects your race if you drink the nite before. It makes me dehydrated, tired, sluggish and gives me digestive problems.... I dont drink for 48 hours in advance of my races because of past experience.

I know a couple of friends who stopped drinking just because they think it effects their running performance and that imaginary 'six-pack' of theirs. Personally, I don't drink. I don't see any reason how drinking not effect your running. My friends said after they drink the next day when they want to run they get all sluggish and bad.

Re: for runners that drink
I didn't drink much in high school, but now that it is readily available in college I have started consuming more alcohol (but never to the point of sickness the next day).. In my past cross country season, I never drank until the nights after races, because it will absolutely kill your stomach during races. Our high school track coach forced us to quit drinking about 1 month + out of state to ensure we could be as fine tuned as possible. Early in the season I would say it's not as big a deal, but when you start getting closer to those big races, I'd say don't do it.

I think you just have to consider what the doctors are telling everyone about beneficial effects of pretty much everything: taken in moderation, it may help (in the case of red wine), but won't really hurt all too bad.

Well if you drink in highschool, it violates the OSHA thing or whatever contract you sign, which kicks you off the team if you keep screwing up.

No, it's actually quite beneficial. I'm sure all world class runners get trashed the week of a major race.

A beer is still more healthy than - let's say - a coke. My dad would rather see me drinking beer than sodas.
