Weights and running

Does weight lifting and long distence running not mix? What is the best way to get both strength results and endurence?

I need a running schedual that can accomodate squatting 3 days per week, and still up my endurence.

If this is not possible, is there a runing schedual that cna help raise my GPP, but still help keep the endurence i have?

Re: Weights and running
haha um....WHAT...ARE...YOU...TALKING...ABOUT...???? lol sorry. but seriosly. weight lifting for "tone" will NOT harm you. go for lighter weights. 3 times a week. preferable AFTER A RUN and do maybe 3 sets of 12 or so. i suggest googling this. (eg. strength training for runners) or ask a coach

Re: Weights and running
Just don't take creatine and give yourself adequate time to recover from both sorts of workouts. You need some muscle strength for maintaining good running form, so you might be setting yourself up for an injury if you consistently run soon after totally wrecking yourself in the gym.

Re: Weights and running
The thing to do is go for low wieght high reps. Don't bench press 75 pounds 3 times and be done. That will give you muslce that looks really great, but is useless for running. Do all sorts of exercises with weights, but make sure it is light enough for you. The typical rule is if you can't do 15 reps, it's too heavy. I personally perfer free weights, but machines work just as well.

Re: Weights and running
Lifting weights is like running, you don't do the same thing all the time. It is okay to throw in a weight session with low reps and high weight. I actually find that doing the low reps, high weight helps me out if I decide I want to add another 5-10lbs to what i would normally be lifting in a 3x10 weight session.

Re: Weights and running
I'll reword in an example that might be easier to understand.
If you are doing 3x10 @ 90lbs on the benchpress and you can't seem to get any more weight (which is likely to happen from time to time), drop the numer of reps to say 3x5 and do 100-110lbs. I find that in the next session I will have a far easier time (mentally and physically) doing that 95lbs for 3x10. Is that easier to understand?
Also squats are generally a means of building explosiveness so I never really did them but would rather do plyos which work the same area.

Re: Weights and running
I took weightlifting during track season and used to do it during xc. I honestly think it helped wiht hills and the kick at the end of the race. But after squat day i would be dead tired, and all in all i think it probably slowed me down more than it helped. I'm preety sure running long distances also stopped me from getting as strong as i would have with out running them. But I still made gains in both of them, got up to 170 bench and an 11 minute 2 mile.
So i was in the same boat as you, doing strength training while trying to be a good runner. Now that summers started I'm gonna stop lifting weihgts a lot and just do pushups pullups and abs, (I know thats not the kind of strength your looking for) and focus on running.
and crazy, stalker is right, if he wants to get good maxes which i'm assuming he does he needs to do heavy weihgts unless hes just begininng.
I'd just try to do the same running I'd do if I wasnt squatting that day, but once again I definently wasnt as fast as I would have been.

Btw I did the 5 chart a lot also.
