HOW TO BECOME C.C. CAPTAIN

So I'm wondering how do you become your cross country team's captain?

Re: HOW TO BECOME C.C. CAPTAIN
All team's are different, most of the time, it's the oldest runner with the best time. So for example, if you have a sophomore that runs faster than your best senior, the fastest senior is still the captain as he/she is the fastest senior.

Re: HOW TO BECOME C.C. CAPTAIN
You can start by showing you're capable of being a leader. On my team we had the best possible people for captain not necessarily fastest but as long as they were on varsity and a capable person they had a good chance of getting captain.

Re: HOW TO BECOME C.C. CAPTAIN
Its a responsibility issue. If you show up to practices, try hard, encourage others, be repectful you're doing a good job and show that you care about the sport and how the team does not just yourself.

Some teams dont have captains just unofficial leaders too.

Re: HOW TO BECOME C.C. CAPTAIN
For my High School team, it was a team vote we took during our end of season "banquet". Ability, popularity, committment, and likeability were probably the most important factors. If you're committed to the team, get along with most of the other runners, and can relate to everyone on the team (from the freshmen on up) then you've got a chance. Good luck (p.s. I was captain for the X-C, indoor and outdoor track teams, and it was alot of fun).

its the seniors if you have a few the fastest ones get it and always showing up to practice and giving a decent effort is taken into consideration. Rarely is it never a senior unles you have none. Our captains last year were both on JV.

Re: HOW TO BECOME C.C. CAPTAIN
at my school it defiantly has a lot to do with seniority. my school is small, less than 100 to a class, 98 in mine. any ways our xc team is small too last year most of our guy's team were seniors (so we have hardly any guy's this year), and they were all captains. we had 6 captains on our guy's side. we only had one senior girl, and she was captain, along with a junior. it has a lot to do with your ability to be a leader. You also have to be dedicated, a good caption knows how to motivate the team.

So you don't pick your captains until the very end of the season? So what is leadership like during the actual season then? Just curious....

Re: HOW TO BECOME C.C. CAPTAIN
we vote at the beginning. Only seniors can be captain. Last year 2 of our captains were on JV. It has to do with how you treat everyone, what kind of a leader you are and how much you dedicate yourself to running. Be nice to everyone. Including the freshmen. Being a freshman last year and only knowing the seniors for a week, I based it on how they treated us froshes and helped us get used to the team. This year priorities have changed a little but I will still take that into consideration

Re: HOW TO BECOME C.C. CAPTAIN
To begin with it doesn't matter if you are captian. If your a guy who like to have a whole lot of title then shore why not go for it.

The thing that i think helps the most if to be really nice to freshman.

Think about it.

Thier young and vulnerable. A little bit of niceness goes a long way... then they'll be your friend forever.

I'm guessing he/she ment they voted for next sesason's captain. On our team there's 2 senior captains and 2 junior captains. We vote at the end of the season for next years captains. They are the best and most dedicated runners.

Re: HOW TO BECOME C.C. CAPTAIN
Why do you need captains on a high school XC team anyhow?
My teams in high school just had a few guys who were kind of the leaders but no official captain. In university we did vote for team captain but that was just because they needed someone to go to Athletics Department meetings once a month.
