breathing techniques

I don't really have a breathing technique for when i run and i think its putting a strain on my running potential... i think you're supposed to breath in from the nose and out through the mouth? does anyone hav any good breathing techniques??

Re: breathing techniques
i have read that too and in a perfect world i guess people manage to do it.
when i am not running i breathe through my nose completely whereas others are mouth breathers (ha ha)
i have excercise induced asthma and
so i have to keep a steady breath that is kinda inline with my pace and my mouth just stays open the whole time (flies can be a problem)
i think if you can get into a groove you should stick with it and dont worry about whether it is in through the nose out through the mouth or another
however i am sure one can accomplish this through much practice and concentration, like yoga breath of fire!!
good luck!

Unless you're running a sub 15 minute 5k I don't think it would have an effect, which would be worth the effort.

i don't know anyone that can breathe in thru the nose and our thru the mouth and run a 15 minute 5k, that'd be impossible

i don't think breathing technique matters, it should be natural. I've never seen a runner breathing just thru their nose. If your gasping for breath than of course your gonna get as much air as possible and use ur mouth and nose

And I just pretty much stated the obvious

Re: breathing techniques
Well a few months ago I was surfing the net for running tips, and I found this page where a guy who was running something like a sub 15 minute 5k had received advice about how to breath and had dropped like 10 seconds off his PB. The amount is really miniscule if you're running like a 20 minute 5k, but at sub 15, 10 seconds is a big difference.

By the way, running speed doesn't correlate with how hard you're breathing. Look at the front runners in an elite 5k race, most of the time they're really relaxed until their kick. Panting is a sign that you're going faster than you've been conditioned for, but if you are conditioned for it, you won't need to pant.

It was actually pretty tough to get all that space in thier. You can't just hit enter you know.
Its. true though

Yeah and if you aren't panting you aren't going hard enough.

Re: breathing techniques
Crazy1, if you don't want to help someone, just leave it to other people to answer. Giving people wrong advice is just plain mean, not to mention irresponsible. At least 70% of your runs should be done at "conversational pace" (you could hold a conversation but not sing), not at "dehydrated dog pace".

Re: breathing techniques
Yes but we were talking about running 5k breathing. Your suppose to hurt when you finish a race. You can go fast if your breathing hard.

If don't think the adive "don't pass out" is good well...
