thinking of doing a tri...

...instead of spring track....the "lure" of running around a circle endless amounts of times has faded and im thinking of training for a tri with the race in early may...good idea? bad idea? thoughts??

Re: thinking of doing a tri...
well... seeing as you only get one chance to do high school track and can do tris forever... you may want to consider doing the tri in the summer. However, if you really don't like track that much and are not looking for the friends, experience, college money/recruitment etc. then do the tri!!!

I do a tri every summer!! The cross training is amazing and the race itself is soo much fun. I have become hooked and hope to do 2 next year. Just make sure that you train for all three parts equally. Especially the swim. I was hoping the run and bike endurance would pull me through the swim the first year but it didn't very well, and the second year when I actually trained for it, I took minutes off my time.

So what kind of tri are you thinking about....

Good luck!!

Track sucks compared to XC, i used to do track but quit. Now I do Ultimate Frisbee in the spring.

Friends don't let friends become triathletes.

Re: thinking of doing a tri...
It would be neat to try one sometime. But for me personally, I think I'm gonna wait awhile (after HS, etc).

What you really need to think about is whether or not you want to give up a whole SEASON of track meets for ONE tri meet. I mean I hate track as much as the next XC runner (don't worry, I know that there's XC-ers out there who like track better) but it IS good conditioning for XC (provided you don't do something dumb like injure yourself in track - speaking from personal experience on that one).

Then again, if you were training for a tri you'd be doing a lot more cross training than if you just ran and did track...which could be very beneficial...

Alex - why so hostile towards Tri's? Bad experience with one?

I say keep running track, track races can be fun too. but the cross training for a tri might make your whole body stronger, i don't know.

I've never actually run one. If they had a duathlon that was run, swim, run or something like that I'd be in but for some reason I'm absolutely terrible on the bike. Maybe it's because my coach was a pro tri/duathlete and I've just made fun of them for so long I now genuinely dislike them.
I would rather run a triathlon than a 100 mile ultra "walk"athon.

Re: thinking of doing a tri...
actually there is no bike-run-bike

Duathlon
run-bike-run

Aquathlons
run-swim-run
swim-run

Triathlons
swim-bike-run

and then there are adventure races like Survival of the Shawangunks which is just crazy hardcore

Really? I'm in for one of those. Is there anywhere that lists aquathlons in Canada/US?
