Shin Pain -- How long should it Last??

I haven't run in a week. My season ended last saturday. The last 2-3 weeks of xc I had shin splints bad enough to make me sit out a couple days.

Now after no running for a week, my shin still hurts. How much longer before I should be concerned about a stress fx?

thanks

i dont know how long. but my advice is STAY OFF YOUR LEGS UNTIL THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO PAIN! sorry, but i wish that i had had someone saying that to me before. trust me. an extra week or two pays off---its better than a few months...

I feel bad for Beanpole. Have you tried spinning/biking? Water running? Get out there and do something. I don't want to hear that they had to put you on prozac.

Xc when you have a stress fracture you really know it.

If it's hurting even when you're not running, I'd be concerned that it is a stress fracture. Otherwise, it's probably just shin splints. If it's a stress fracture, you need to go see a sports doctor about it. Shin splints are relatively easy to fix, so have a look on the web for some info.

Re: Shin Pain -- How long should it Last??
OMG i dont know!

honestly though. i need something to calm me down! im not "depressed" or anything. i jsut cant sit still! you have no idea its like i have ADHD or something. like you know, fidegty kids they put them on like ridalin and stuff to calm em down, THATS what i need! im like a 5 year on candy 24/7! i cant sleep either! its called. denial??? lol i dont know. i havent been to a doc yet embarrased face i know i should. but whats he gonna tell me? oo stress fracture. "take timeoff" wich im doing anyways. agh! and im biking like EVERY DAY! for like 1-2 hours! its not helping! hehe. oh my goodness though. the like month after it first hurted i didnt do anything and my grades dropped!!! :| they gone back up now since iv been biking! and im such a computer junky now!!! ahh! trust me, take time off or youl end up CRAZY like me!!!! giggles

ps. i just reread this and i cant talk either! lol

pss. im not sure whats wrong with my leg right now
its either:
-shin splints (not likely since its been awhile)
-stress fracture (not likely either since there is no pain in one spot...my shins dont hurt at all actually)
-calf muscle tear (this is what i think it is b/c my calf wont relax at all...)

Have you tried appling ice daily in the area of pain? If you think you'll have these pains again, ask your XC coach about new streches that'll prevent shin splints. If taking time off and appliying ice doesn't get rid of your splints, maybe you need to talk to a doctor or something.... not us idiots! I mean uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, "mentally disabled"

prozac = antidepression meds... you really should ride your bike or swim or something... you sound miserable!!

yeah it hurts when i don't run.... and the pain seems to be limited to a 1-2 inch area when I touch it....I had a stress fracture last year and the pain is becoming similar...

although that was in my fibula so it was in a completely different part of my leg... so it makes it hard to compare

edited to ask... Beanpole what exactly is wrong with you?? It sounds like a pretty intense injury?!?!

Well sounds like you're gonna be off running for a while. I'm no expert on this, but I'd say it might be an idea to see a doctor to work out exactly how bad it is.

Re: Shin Pain -- How long should it Last??
Compartment syndrome is caused by the muscle becoming too big for its surrounding sheath, causing pain. It can be caused by a sudden blow or, more likely in the case of a running injury, by an overuse injury that makes the muscle swell. The muscle can also be overdeveloped by training. The pain is usually felt in the muscles at the front of the shin, or the deep calf muscles at the back. Pain is usually felt during and just after exercise. Also, the muscle can feel hard and inflexible, but this subsides soon after exercise.

Your injury could also be a muscle tear or a 'chronic muscle tear', caused by hard knots in the muscles where the fibres are continually tight- with this problem there is usually a place in the muscle that is very sore when pressed. I think that massage helps with this.

Re: Shin Pain -- How long should it Last??
hmmm i dont know...it could be anything at this point, or a combination of things. im just gonna lay off till all pain is gone. no indoor season for me to be safe (never really liked track much anyways...circles but me) iv been icing and massaging and alternating biking and yoga ( i take it easy on my right leg though)
anyways tho. this post was originally about runxc09...what happened there???

Re: Shin Pain -- How long should it Last??
man this is the situation:
-my leg doesnt hurt ANYWHERE to the touch
-its only my right leg
-the calf is consistenly tight and its the only thing i can feel when i try to run around (like in phys ed)
-sometimes my front shin muscle just starts throbbing, and if i press on the area the pain goes away. the throbbing only happens at night
-i can tap the bone anywhere and i dont feel anything

so im just gonna wait it out, i got nothing to lose other than if i start up running ill most likely make it worht
