I used to be horrible at sprinting, I could only run longer distances. A couple of months age I started to swim and since then I have gotten far better at sprinting. Does anyone know if this is a result of swimming or whether it is just a coincidence. People are calling me crazy.
mainly swimming only helps distance because of endurance. It could help a little with strength. Im a great swimmer (competitivly) but my sprint is what you call.....the ugliest thing you have ever seen in you life. I run like a 14 second 100 or something. But as the distacnes get longer I get better.
Water softens the muscles. Everyone knows that.

Hahaha, no it doesn't weaken or soften the muscles. Swimming helps with core muscles. Its good for distance because it helps build up your lung capacity. For sprinting, I don't think that it will help much. It may help with your explosiveness. If you swim with a team, they work with your explosiveness for quick starts. If not then I have no idea what swimming does for sprints.
i LOVE swimming laps. it just makes me happy. Sometimes I wonder if I have some kind of messed up instinct to work myself until I die. I always seem to want to always take the hard way. Anyway, to answer your question, I don't really know. It might help. For track & xc we swim every once in a while. It might depend on the length of the sprints you are working on. I could see it helping on the longer sprints like a 400 or something. Swimming definitely helps me with lung capacity.
oh, and jeff i'll have to try your training stradigy, I've been trying to drop my mile time and that sounds like just the kind of thing that would give me an extra push at the end!
