Re: Most hard-core Event
Definitely the 800. Most people actually call it the 800 meter dash, and for obvious reasons. The 800, as many of you have said, it too long to be an all out sprint and too short to be a distance race- that is why it is called middle distance.

The 400 hurts your butt more, but you can hold full speed for the entire race, while in the 800 you can't.

My second choice would probably be the 2000 meter steeplechase.

Someone once said, "The 800 is the toughest mental race. Hands down. The 2 mile is the toughest race physically." I personally believe that this is true. The 800 is just one of those races.(BTW, I am saying this as high school track. I dont know much about college track yet)

I think if any of you have ever run a steeplechase or a 400 hurdles race you'd feel differently.

Re: Most hard-core Event
Yes I would agree the 400m Hurdles are probably one of the hardest events, but they are right up there with the 500m. 400m Hurdles because you are sprinting as hard as you can and still have to go over 10 hurdles before you hit the line.
The 500m because you're running an all out 400 and then have to run another 100 all out, that race just plain sucks.

I've never heard tell of people running a 500. I'm assuming it's indoors.

Re: Most hard-core Event
I think it's strange that people can agree on the hardest event.

It almost implies that we could make a curve for duration of full exertion vs pain or something. And then find the peaks and link them to physiological thresholds.

We could use the peaks of the continuous curves to find the ultimate event, the most painful distance possible. Maybe it's the 943m. The 700 sturdlechase.

Yeah, its an indoor event. Not sure if its just in my conference, I don't think they run it at nationals and such. It is not a fun race though, look at americaeast.com and check the results from the indoor championships, the best times are usually just over a minute.

Re: Most hard-core Event
no, steeple is easy

for me its actually the 400. because my sprinting speed is horrendous. if i put a comparable effort into a 400 race as an 800 race, the 400 hurts so much more.

say my 800 time is X (that's while going all out). well obviously my 400 time should be less than X/2. but i have pretty much zero fast twitch muscle fibers so increasing my speed during that 400 hurts A LOT

sigh
oh well i'm a marathon runner now so no more 400s ever bwahahaha

Re: Most hard-core Event
I've run the 600 and the 800 but I'm mainly a hurdler. I would have to say for me, the 300m hurdles are the hardest because they are a full sprint with hurdles in the way- and its a lot easier to run around a corner than to try and do a hurdle on the corner (you kinda have to go to the inside of your lane so you land at the opposite end- if i dont do that I go in another lane) besides, how many people have you seen fall doing the 800 on the corner in comparison with the number of people (myself included) who fall on the corner in the 300s

Re: Most hard-core Event
1600 is the hardest. Long but fast. The 800 is much easier once you figure out how to pace yourself.

If anything hurts (or if you have a stomach virus) the 3200 is the worst kind of torture imaginable.

Re: Most hard-core Event
all the hurdlers, yes it may be tough but for a pure running only event its the 8 hundred

400 and less is a pure sprint,

1000 and up is a mental race

800 is a pure combination and a mind game espically indoors
