Re: Are people intimated by runners?
some of my friends are runners, but most of them are not.
I avoid talking about a run or running in general to those who don't do it because they can't understand why someone would be passionate about it and I believe it gets on there nerves. I would love to meet other runners, It's almost as if we are in a "secret club".

Re: Are people intimated by runners?
I first started running because I wanted to lose weight, and I started with the couch to 5k program. I told my friends what I was doing, and they would greet me every other day with a "hows your running going?" and I would tell them all about it. They seemed genuinely interested in my exercise because I think they were just happy that I was doing something active. Now that I've since graduated the C25k program, they actually seem a little annoyed when I bring up running. I still get really excited about going a farther distance/getting a better time, but they really don't want to hear it anymore. Also, the fact that I now get up at 7am to go running weirds them out. 7am isn't even that early! But I am a graduate student, most of us don't get up till noon ;-) My husband at least says "thats nice honey" when I tell him all about my running. But for the most part, I just keep it to myself.

Re: Are people intimated by runners?
I wouldn't say that (non-runner) people are intimidated by runners. I have found that when the topic of running comes up, or if someone learns that you or another person is a runners they respond in one of these ways:

1) feigned, but polite interest, perhaps a brief question or two in order guage whether the topic will need to continue;
2) uninterest, and quickly move on to something else
3) a few questions to see if you've done anything that they can relate to; or else they try to compare it with some other activity that they know something about.
4) brief acknowledgement, with a positive or affirmative reaponse like "wow that's cool" or "good for you"; an maybe a question or two to find out what kind of running you do, etc.

Gnerally speaking, I do not bring up the topic of running very much. Often people who know I run bring it up first. Frankly, I know tlaking about a sport or hobby one has can be very boring to those who do not know much about it or care to try it--just think about those friends or coworkers you have that could spend hours talking about their golf golf game everyday!

Re: Are people intimated by runners?
All I know is that when you're out there in January, battling 20 mph headwinds and sub 40 temps in a blinding rainstorm, feeling miserable and questioning yourself, and then you spot some other miserable person out on a run, that's when you "get it."

I really think there are way more runners out there than people realize. Everyday that I drive around I see some runner out somewhere, and some events here in Seattle draw thousands of people (most of whom are faster than me )

Re: Are people intimated by runners?
I also think that many people are intimidated by running to even enter races. I encourage the folks I work with to run and to try entering a 5K. A lot of them say that there's no way they'd enter as they are too slow and would have no chance to win. And I always stress to them that the vast majority of these races are recreational, not just for the elite, and are to raise money for charities. But I think too many "outsiders" have an attitude of "if I don't have a shot at winning, I don't want to look like a fool coming in last place" - which is exactly opposite of the atmosphere of all of the races I've run.

I remember when I was into tennis and golf awhile ago and it was so easy to get people to converse with me about those sports, but for some reason, the topic of running seems to have the opposite effect.

Some are--- more just think it's boring---

Though I have gotten more than enough to pick up running by my talking/excitement about it to encourage me to keep talking!

If you people think you have issues, try being an ultrarunner. Even runners think we're freaks!!

Re: Are people intimated by runners?
I've never run into anyone who was intimidated, but if I talk about running, I can people's eyes glaze over in boredom. Just as if someone wanted to talk to me about golf.

I do live for the moments when I talk about my training and I get the classic "I don't even like to DRIVE that far"

Re: Are people intimated by runners?
I apologize to runners everywhere, but I actually think I have the opposite effect. I'm 5'11" and float between 195-210 depending on how close it is to the winter holidays. When I tell people that I've run a marathon ans/or share my 5k times - current PR is now down to 21 and change (big improvement for me), it seems to blow their image of runners. Like - well ****, if his fat arse can do it, then it must be easy. I think it almost makes them angry - like they want running to be hard and only for certain body-types. I'm definitely mesomorph - build more for sprinting than long distance, but I'm older now, so distance is a better fit. In fact, my one neighber actually looked at me and said, quite dejectedly - "you have just destroyed my conception of what a distance runner is" - and it wasn't a compliment. He seemed truly deflated. He's a thin guy and had just worked up to 2 mi. on the treadmill. So - I am sorry to the ectomorph's and elites who are everything a distance runner should be. I didn't mean to tarnish your image, I just like to run. Maybe from now on, I'll just tell folks I'm doing jazzercise - I don't care what I do to those people's image.

Ha! I know that!
I'm 5'3.5 and 160 lb though.
Some people just act offended that I run, or that I've run a marathon. Or disbelief... I combat that by extending an open invitation for someone to join me on a run.
I'm slower now, but have run some fast times before (ah, how I want to get back there)--- it's funny when even runners think you don't look like a runner and take it as an insult on themselves that you're out there (not that that's common!)

Re: Are people intimated by runners?
Unprovoked defensiveness...check!

Anyway, I don't find that people are intimidated at all. Actually, it seems to make them feel better when they find out that I run...as though they try to figure out why I'm skinny (and I'm actually not skinny at all, for a competitive distance runner) and then realize it's just because I burn an extra 1400 calories a day or so...

But it seems to me that I'm generally surrounded by healthy, active people.

You're right about runners being ticked off too. It happens during races if I come up behind or start to pass someone younger/lighter. They get this - WTF, no way I'm letting HIM pass me, look on their face. Depending on my mood and whether I have the energy I'll either ease off and chuckle or crush them just to tick 'em off. The more of a jerk the guy seems to be, the more likely I'll try to beat him.

Re: Are people intimated by runners?
When I say to my friends that I´ve ran 10 km, they think I´m crazy.

Anyway, I hardly see any runners around, only in some heavily dense neighborhoods. Besides that, mainly joggers who spend their entire run running in circles around a park and who think they are running.

Re: Are people intimated by runners?
I'm a mom of two kids and my other mom friends generally seem annoyed by my running. They see me running around the neighborhood and comment that I make them feel guilty. Obviously that's not my intent so I just feel sefl-conscious. Also, not to sound conceited but I'm pretty thin so I think that bothers them too. Another mom ran a distance run with me and everyone in our circle of friends made a big deal of congratulating her and asking her how it went, but no one asked me. She is a little overweight and a beginner runner. I never bring up my running or try to show it off so I imagine the hostility comes from my physique? I really don't know but I honestly don't feel 'better' than anyone, and I always just say it is my hobby. It's just awkward.
