The Power of Pre

I have an 2.25 XC route that is a very scenic and fun run around part of a lake near my home. It beings across a wooden bridge and then a fairly flat section of a mulched trail. The second half has many hills with some very steep sections, there are also two creek jumps that prevent you from maintaining an even pace.

A typical easy run gets me around this course in about 23-24 minutes. My record time so far is 20:30 seconds.

Well i was at the local running shop and noticed a poster of a guy whering a stop pre shirt. Intrigued and noticing its classic 70's look it reminded me of my older brother who ran high school cross country.

Yesterday I had some free time and searched for Pre, and well most of you probably already know. Just awesome stuff, I was seven years old and barely remember watching the '72 olympics because my entire family where track and field enthusiasts. Maybe it jogged some faint memories in my head. Anyway, after reading a few of Prefontaines quotes, partculary the ones about guts and enduring pain etc. I was inspired and decided to go for my "lake run"

I then destoyed my previous record with a time of 18:15 a total of 2:15 seconds better than my best time.

Thanks Steve

Prefontaine won the NCAA cross country championship as a freshman, sophomore and senior. Trivia question - who had more guts than Pre in the 1972 NCAAs and what school did he run for?

Prefontaine's been dead for 32 years.

Let it go.

He's got a point there, Fred.

Interesting perspective ... Everyone who has ever plugged in wants to play like Jimi; I never supposed that everyone who puts on running shoes would want to run like Pre.

I suppose that with a fair amount of discipline and training, one could learn to put one foot in front of the other and cover a distance in just about the same time as Pre; it takes a fair amount of "magic" to play like Jimi - just getting the notes right is only 1/2 of the battle.

"White men listen to Jimi, but they don't hear Jimi."

Pre drove drunk.

An early dead duck.

Don't do what Pre did.

Thanks for the tip, because we were all about to go smash up our cars.

A fatal error in judgement on his part, however that doesn't diminish his greatness as a runner.

People everwhere are inspired by those who came before us and I like kestrou choose not to let it go.

"Pre Lives" in our memories and continues to inspire so many of us.

Thanks bobscamman - my point exactly!

And unlike many other great runners - Pre wore his heart & effort "on his shirtsleeve" - that's why so many people appreciate what he did.

I think the idea is to run really, really fast when you're young; then smash up your car BEFORE you get old and slow.

Too late for me, sadly; and the really, really fast part ... well, never quite happened.

Believe me, I know all about it being too late, but what about this?

Supposed I faked my death. Then, everyone might be so glad to see me that they'd forget about how much slower I've gotten. Also, I could rationalize all my times with some kind of "fresh start" perspective.

Re: The Power of Pre
Most people who fake their own deaths - Elvis, Jim Morrison, Paul McCartney - do so that they may live to grow old, fat and lazy like normal people.

If you want to play a "I was dead, now I'm back and I'm faster than ever" game; I think zombie-ism or vampirism is the way to go.

Gotta run only those meets under the lights, though.

Re: The Power of Pre
Couple things-
I definitely could be wrong but I don't think there's ever been proof that Pre drove drunk. I read somewhere (though don't remember where) that witnesses have him drinking 2 beers over the course of 4 hours prior to the accident. If so- That wouldn't, probably, make him drunk.
Also, after his death his blood test came back at .16 which is above the legal limit, obviously, but, as the wikipedia article on him points out, due to it being done after his death his decomposition could have affected the test:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Prefontaine[/URL" target="_blank">

Also the only witness on the scene described another car that almost ran him over speeding away from the incident. Hard to imagine that this car wasn't involved in the accident (or else why flee?)...

Finally, in so far as anybody could learn to run like Pre I think anyone on this site would recognize that there was a great degree of natural talent and "gift" in order to run like he ran.
