NFL players

ok the other night I got into an argument with my friend. Somehow we got to talking about how fast an NFL player could run a 5k. I said that i doubt they are very fast because of all of their mass and it is mainly only consisting of fast twitch muscle. I said that i could beat most and maybe even all of the nfl players in a 5k. He being in football did not agree at all and said i was full of myself. I believe though that football players are not trained to run long distance and would not be able to run a fast 5k.

I run in the low 17's for the 5k and my pr is a 16:58

You'd win. There might be one or two players with a running background who could make it interesting, but you don't just pick up and run sub-17, it requires training. Bear in mind that most people have no idea how fast that is. Maybe they can run 6:30 for the mile but don't realize that that's a far cry from running 5:30, much less for 3.1 consecutive miles.

Re: NFL players
I wonder what Jerry Rice's time would be in the 5K? I would put my money on the receivers and not the running backs.

Aren't all their routes speed workouts. I wonder how much distance they put in a practice or a game.

I think the answer is...if any of them tried, and trained, to run a 5K, they could beat any of us.

However, they do not, and I would hazard a guess that anyone who could run an 18 minute 5K could beat 80 or 90 percent of them.

****, even me, a 48 year old who hits a 22 minutes 5k, struggling for a 21 minute 5k, could probably beat over 50% of them, if not more.

For that matter, (not me), I would bet that a good (not superbly fast, mind you) 5K runner could beat a sprinter, or maybe even a good miler in a 5K.

It's not that they aren't capable of it, it's that they don't train for it.

Re: NFL players
Actually, I'm not sure how true that is...

Because NFL talent is so vastly different than distance running talent, I'd be extremely surprised if you could coach most NFL players past 17 minutes.

Plus, there's so many pro NFL players...53 per team. Multiply that by the number of teams and count down the same number of athletes on the US marathon list. That would probably take you into the 2:50 range.

Note:
Toomer ran in the race but not in 2006. I could not locate his name in the results, however, his photo at the finish line in one of the years was used in the race brochure. Not sure which year it was though.

Re: NFL players
Most offensive and defensive linemen and linebackers, in my opinion, would be hard pressed to finish a 5K let alone beat you. They are not built or trained to run, although teams want speedy linebackers, it is a short burst of speed. Their positions are about strength. Forget QBs and running backs.

Now receivers and defensive backs, with a little training, could probably run a fast 5K. I would say most NFL players could not beat you.

Now basketball players are another story.
