Re: Sick of Race T-Shirts - what would be better
What's wrong with a race skewed toward more experienced runners instead of new runners? There are hundreds of races that are new runner friendly. Having one that included things that make experienced runners happy (like not having to pay a lot of money for extraneous stuff like race shirts) wouldn't ruin life for the joggers.

Absolutely nothing's wrong with it. It'll just shrink participation, that's all.

Re: Sick of Race T-Shirts - what would be better
I have only been running for a little over a year and I finally through out some of my most worn out tshirts. At first it was a must have item for me but some have better designs that others, espcially with all the sponsers logos on the back.I would have to vote for the gloves though, it has to cost less than a tee, or a knit hat would be an alternative.
And the no frills races are cool too, forget the tshirts give me some stocked up snacks at the end or goo on the course

Re: Sick of Race T-Shirts - what would be better
more often than not, I tell races to keep their shirts.

I liek the idea of more/better food.
humnn -- a picture frame?
I also like the little towels... they're great for wiping my feet off at the pool or at a triathlon..

I suspect the race organizers prefer NOT to skew towards exprerienced folks b/c in cutting numbers the return on holding the race goes way down - financially speaking...

what about something to put on your car - decal, magnet, license plate frame? May not be practical, but different...

Our club gave out tanks this year.

One year they gave out towels. People seemed to like that.

Screw the potted plant... bring on the wine every time...

Aside from long and short sleeved t-shirst (both cotton and tech) I've gotten the following:

- water bottles
- beanie
- gloves
- wind vest
- logo'ed small towel
- kit backpack
- baseball cap

The coolest was the backpack but I've used the gloves so many times that I'd consider them the best affordable goody.

Re: Sick of Race T-Shirts - what would be better
The vast majority of NYRRC give-aways are t-shirts. However, also appreciated were:
‒ wrist wallets
‒ sweatshirts
‒ buffs (VERY popular in the winter)
‒ gloves
‒ belt pouches
‒ string backpacks

Re: Sick of Race T-Shirts - what would be better
How about making a statement for peace in the world with a different type of race - the human race? I have come up with a design to try to promote world peace by making a statement that every person is part of the one human race. Please visit my site and think about giving the stunning shirts being sold on that site. www.oneracehuman.info[/URL" target="_blank">

Re: Sick of Race T-Shirts - what would be better
How about a coolmax visor or coolmax socks? Those I can use. I like technical t-shirts and the idea about a free download of race pictures (even though I look so dorky most of the time). A reduced race fee or gift certificate to a running store are good ideas too.

Re: Sick of Race T-Shirts - what would be better
First of all, THANKS for realizing that the t-shirts are not exactly desired by almost everyone.

How about one of the following:

wrist ID's (everyone knows they should run with them, but don't)

the pix at the end or during the run that someone suggested is a great idea

microfiber shirt, but probably too expensive

microfiber hat

running CD

DVD to an inspirational post, like to Jim McLaren

Re: Sick of Race T-Shirts - what would be better
I am also sick and tired of the same old cotton shirts with a zillion logos on em but I am NOT sick of getting really good running t's or singlets that are coolmax/mesh. There are a few races with excellent shirts and honestly those are the ones where I don't feel the entry fees are sky high.

Any really good running gear (socks, mesh/lite headband) etc.....

I hear this sentiment a lot and I agree. Who runs for stuff anymore? I have too much of it already. Finish line photo is not a bad idea; or how about optional technical shirt and/or first-time finishers tee?

Re: Sick of Race T-Shirts - what would be better
I have gotten a clip on, red blinky light with a company logo on it. It was passed out at some outdoor event I went to. I use it running and for riding. I like the socks and gloves also. I think the best is giving each runner an option.
