War Stories

I would first like to say that I am very new to running. I started in May '07. I ran my first 5k at the Indianapolis Marathon on 10/20. I finished 69th out of 422 and ran it in 26:08. Anyway, last week I was running in a local park and was bitten on the ankle by a dog that was not on a leash. The owner showed up quickly and after the shock wore off and info was exchanged I finished my run. I just wanted to see if anyone has had any scary or strange stories or experiences they would like to share. I know I'm not the only runner who has been biten by a dog. If anyone has any safety tips to share I would really appriciate it.
PEACE!

Re: War Stories
Good job with the 5K, piper24.

Just curious--why did you continue the run after being bitten? If I were in your place, I would have checked into the ER right away.

I don't think there is much that can be done other than some situational awareness and mace. I'm sure you'll be more wary in the future and might be packin'.

Good luck!

Re: War Stories
First let me say that I love dogs. Two mutts are members of my family. But, animals sense fear. Knowing that, when I?m on a run and a (mean) dog chases me, I turn around and confront evil beast. I crouch down and get on the dog?s level (while looking for a rock to pick up) and let the dog know I?m not kidding either. For fierce dogs I?ll even growl and bark back at them. For me, it works. They always stop and I?ve even turned around Pit Bulls. Once, a big persistent German Sheppard kept returning for the chase after being rebuffed a couple of times within a couple hundred yards. It was on one of my usual courses and I?d encountered the dog often. I ended the ordeal with a right hook. I knocked the dog out cold. Then I felt bad. The dog was unconscious for several seconds before he came-to and scurried away with his tail between his legs. He never ever chased me again.

A FORCED to be reckoned with then...

I like your approach. This namby pamby talk to the dog rubbish never works. If he charges you need to lay him out cold.

Oh God this one brought back memories. I was chased by a snarling Collie once for about 2 miles. Running and crying and thinking it's a Collie for God's sakes aren't they usually nice dogs? Don't think I have ever ran faster than I did that day...I LOVE dogs too - I have four of my own but this guy was not giving up so I had to stop cold and give him a good kick. Where I live now there is a giant 180 pound white akita that "joins" me sometimes - at first I ran for my life until I met him in the street with his owner who told me he loves to run. While I am not thrilled this dog is off leash and scares half the neighborhood, sometimes it's not so bad to have him as my running partner once the initial shock of seeing him wears off...

Yikes! My former running buddy and I have encountered a turkey on one of our long trail runs (they don't like to move out of the way and he was big!) and have nearly been plowed over by a bunch of deer on the same trails. You have to be reeeeeal alert out on those trails....

I'm from NY and the thought of running into a TURKEY when I am out running had me laughing for about half an hour...I mean a turkey...very funny.

Re: War Stories
We have an abundance of Canadian geese in our local parks. They **** all over the running path and in the spring and summer, when they're all new parents, they get very ornery and aggressive too.

Over the summer I apparently ran slightly too close to one of the goslings and I was chased for about twenty yards by a crazed, hissing parental goose. It was terrifying at the time, but as soon as I got away and was doubled over laughing.

I ran into a bear and her 3 cubs one morning. I was running a dirt road and came over a hill and there she was 50ft away. One look at me and she turned and took off before I could do the same.

Re: War Stories
On the topic of dogs, I had a weird one awhile back. I had just started out on my run when the neighbors dog rushes out and falls in beside me. No problem I thought, he's a friendly mutt and it looks like he just wants to go on a run.

About a mile down the road, another dog runs out and joins in. I'm giggling a bit when a third dog all of sudden joins the pack. Here I am running down the road with three strange dogs in tow. As I hit the turn around and came back, one by one the dogs peeled off at their individual houses until I finished the run all by myself. It was one of the coolest and strangest running moments I ever had.

Welcome to Cool Running. I?ve seen falcons and hawks in Central Park, a couple of racoons, and there was that coyote a couple of years ago . . .

Re: War Stories
My coach had me down for a double the other day. By evening, I was dead tired, it was dark and cold and windy. But, I went out anyway.

We don't have street lights, so it can get pretty dark. I'm running along, minding my own business. Up ahead in a yard I see a big animal with huge ears. I'm thinking German Shephard. ****!!! I do not feel like dealing with a dog! I get closer, only to see that it was a deer. She stomped her hoof a couple times and snorted, then took off running between a couple houses.
