MP3 Player advice

The holiday season is approaching and for Christmas I am planning on purchasing an MP3 player for my husband. I need avice because he is seriously into music.
I-Pods arer out of the question. He does not like them.
He has hinted toward the Zune. I need to know is what the major difference between the 8gb and 30 gb (other than memory size.)
Also is there another mp3 player with a large memory that is comparable?
He will be using it running as well so size could be an issue.

Re: MP3 Player advice
JA25,

I'm not an I-Poo-ed fan either - not sure about "now", but it was historically very difficult to get MP3s onto them.

I have a Sansa with solid-state memory and it's great. Generally the very high capacity memory models (of any manufacturer) use a small hard-disk, and I'd avoid those because they don't "take a beating" as well as those that are completely solid state. The upper limit for solid-state players right now is about 8GB, although 4GB is plenty.

Check out online retailers like buy.com - or brick and mortar like Best Buy or, I'm pretty sure even Wal-Mart carries them.

And I have No Financial Interest in any of the listed companies!

if he is an all-weather runner - sony make a sport mp3 (older, now - but still available) that is water resistant.

I have a sony nw series, and I love it - can operatie it with one hand through the fabirc while it is in my pocket.

Re: MP3 Player advice
If he wants a large capacity player that's going to cost some bucks you might want to get him a second cheap player just for running. I've been real happy with a 1 gig $20 player....... I never have to worry about it getting wet, lost, or stolen...... if I have to replace it, it's only $20.

Re: MP3 Player advice
Why not an iPod? I've had 2 of them and it's never been difficult at all to get MP3s on them, and they work with both Mac and PC. The iTunes interface pretty much does all the work for you. Simple drag-and-drop. My wife has an iPod shuffle that's cheap, about the size a quarter, and holds all the music she needs for a long run (she runs marathons). They also make the Nano that's super tiny, plays video, has 4 or 8GB capacity, and uses flash memory so there's no hard drive to jostle. The newer ones are a lot more scratch-resistant than in prior generations, too, because they're in sleek aluminum cases. The interface works great even through fabric. They're really worth another look, I think.

The 8GB Zune 2 is the newer, sort of "nano" version of the original 30GB. I've held them and they seem fairly bulky, though not as bulky as the original 30GB, which is like carrying around a bar of soap. The 8GB plays a larger variety of file types and has an improved touch pad, too. If he's definitely leaning toward a zune, then I'd think about the newer model.

Re: MP3 Player advice
javaangel -- if he's hinted at a Zune, go with the 8gb model. It uses flash memory. The 30GB uses a hard disk. Running and hard disks is not a great combination long-term.

kestrou -- Putting MP3 files on an ipod is as as easy as falling off a log. IMHO the majority of the success of Apple's iPod is the ease with which non-geeks can use it. It works and is far more intuitive to John and Jane Q Public.

Thanks LJ - I am a geek, and have MANY thousands of MP3s (don't ask where they came from ) and, once upon a time, I-Pods only played songs from I-Tunes. Glad to hear that's no longer the case and I'll consider one in the future!

Re: MP3 Player advice
off topic
kestrou I suspect part of the confusion comes from the media not really differentiating between iTunes and the iTunes store. The first is the application you run on the computer which manages your music library. While not the only way to put stuff on an iPod it is the only one "supported". iTunes will gladly import mp3 files as well as the AAC files Apple likes to use. It also will rip your CD's, and you have the choice of ripping them into mp3 or aac format as you prefer. Whether you purchase mp3's from other sources or rip your own CD's, you can very easily put these files onto any ipod.

The iTunes store is coupled with iTunes and many people purchase music from that source. I believe they've more recently allowed some of the library to be purchased without DRM and in mp3 format, but most is in aac.

Re: MP3 Player advice
I have a Creative Zen Stone Plus that I really like for running. It's tiny and holds 2 GB, plus it has a screen, unlike the iPod Shuffle.

As LewJ said, don't buy a hard drive-based player for running. The constant jarring is bad for the drive.

I should add, I have an iPod for everyday use; the Creative is just for running. I'm not sure I would like it as an everyday player. The interface is not as good as the iPod, and it doesn't hold enough music.

Re: MP3 Player advice
I have an iRiver Clix that I like. I bought it over the iPod for two reasons: First, it works with Rhapsody's "To Go" service. For a flat monthly fee, you can download however many tracks you want off of the Rhapsody service. iPod is not supported by any of the so-called subscription services. Second, I wanted an FM radio, which iPod does not offer.

The Clix (at least the year-old model that I have) is a little buggy and has some issues with rights management. I basically have to reformat it and recopy all my tracks to it once a month. It's not a big deal, but a pain if I'm in a hurry to get out the door. The sound quality is excellent, however, as are the user interface and controls.

I've heard good things about one of the new Sansa's that's integrated with Rhapsody (the model number ends in "r"). When and if my Clix dies, I'll probably look into that player.

Re: MP3 Player advice
iPod Shuffle, i know the answer you didnt want but here is few reasons. It is small, you push the button and you go. (i clip mine to wristband of my polar watch, sorry cannot handle the garmin monster)

2. It is relativly cheap, so when it is dead, get a new one. I got mine just for running and keep regular "more-songs-then-i-can-listen-to"Gb version for more civilized events in life.

3. pick a color that will match your running gear. For example, did anyone notice that green shuffle matches adidas adistar line?

4. who cares, i spend more money lately on **** headphones then mp3 players.
