That's exactly how globalization is supposed to work. All the profits go to the wealthier countries while less well-off countries "develop" by providing cheap labor.

Not letting the ships in is, perhaps, a small thing. But there are many other reasons to be hesitant to deal with China. It may be true that you are "hurting" the US company in the short term, but if they hurt enough they will move their production to a more generally acceptable locale. If enough companies move their production out of China, it might have an effect.
I doubt this is feasible, though, since we all think that cheap consumer electronics is more important than human rights. And no wonder; if I had to pay western labor to make my TVs, I could probably only afford one or two.

I was perfectly aware of that, but if you want to "hurt" the Chinese economy, you should not target goods sold by American companies. I am all for boycotting sweatshops and exploitation of laborers. I just do not see the link between, say Nike or Gap, and the ships. And, yes, I agree that the ships should have been allowed in. I was merely pointing out flawed thinking.

Thatīs the point. China is bringing its own labor force in. The Congo and other countries in Africa donīt even get the benefit of the employment.

My fiance used to live in Taiwan, in the south where the independence party is strongest. For political reasons, we avoid Chinese products when we can. It is really, really difficult though.
