It's probably a good idea to call your doctor, just to be sure there is nothing wrong. It could easily have been heat and dehydration though.
In my experience (because I have passed out before) it is perfectly normal to feel a little weak afterwards. In fact, I'd say take your planned workouts for tomorrow easy, because you may still feel a little under the weather.

About embarrassment - Last time I fainted was in a business meeting, where we were standing around discussing products. They called the EMT's on me too, so I was doubly embarrassed.

You really should get to a doctor. It doesn't seem like you would have been out there long enough to become dehydrated and you probably weren't running all out either. Plus you said you felt crappy the whole run so maybe something was going on before you even ran.

Don't mess around with health issues. Healthy people have been known to succumb if they ignore warning signs.

If I were you, I would definitely go to the doc just to make sure all is well. 99.9% chance it was just the heat, but better to be safe.

Here is my wild guess of what happened: Car needs to go into shop. You figure, why not run home, it's only 3 miles...I don't need to hydrate...it's only 3 miles. Then, your body remembers that you live in coastal Canada (right?), where it doesn't get hot very often. Body gets a bit dehydrated and overheated. Then you lean back and your brain says, "hey, where did all the oxygen go." Next thing you know your on the floor. But get a doctor to tell you that.

I have low blood pressure and while I'm still trying to figure out the running and not passing out combination (my blood pressure drops when my pulse rises...strange condition), I've found that drinking V8 and hour or so before a run helps. The higher-than-normal sodium levels in V8 helps keep blood pressure up.

Can't add much more to the advice given, but I certainly hope that this was a one-time thing, Meg. I hope you're feeling a lot better now

I agree with whoever said it could be from running then stopping quickly. I live in Texas. It is VERY hot and humid here all the time, so I have experienced light-headedness after exercise before. I've passed out once at a football game while climbing the stairs up into the stadium as well. After you run, especially in the heat, it is important to walk for 5-10 minutes instead of suddenly stopping. I also think Gatorade is better than water when it is extremely hot and humid. I always take Gatorade on the bike, and I eat a Clif bar before all my runs and drink Gatorade afterward. You sweat so much more, so you need all the extra stuff in Gatorade. You could have passed out from low blood sugar, dehydration, stopping too fast, anemia, or any number of things. You might just get a blood test done to check your iron and blood sugar. A friend of mine recently discovered she is anemic, though she has never had symptoms. Taking a multivitamin can help as well as just getting enough leafy greens. I am terrible about eating those good things AND about getting enough to drink, but I'm really trying harder in both areas. You may have just not had enough to drink before you started your run since you didn't necessarily "plan" for it. You also need to listen to your body while running. I'm sure you had signs earlier in the run. Take walk breaks often. I have to take them when it is really hot. Jeff Galloway talks a lot about walk breaks in his book, and he says you should take more in hot weather. If you normally take none on a 3 mile run (like me), then you may have to take one every mile when it is really hot. You don't lose anything taking walk breaks. I've begun doing them, and it is great because I feel like I can run forever!

Meg...get checked out. I passed out after a 1/2 mary some years ago and ended up finding out I have a slight abnormality in my heartrate (nothing too serious, thank goodness).

Hang in there...I hope it's nothing!!!!

Her blog has her on the road for Nationals as of August 2nd. If they're today, good luck, Flip!

And, for future reference, please don't fall off the map after posting a potentially skeery health issue. (Though she did manage a post or two on other threads around the 30th/31st.)

Hi! Yes, I'm at Nationals, and only just got internet access. I'm alive, no major passing out issues since the last one. I Am going to go get checked by a doc when I get home, though.

Sorry about falling off the map -- I'm moving house and have been crazy scattered.

Thanks for your concern and input, everyone! I'll post a race report soon, I promise!

Meg

Yay! Win, win! Alive AND a RR!

(Though the qualifier "major" makes me hope there were also no minor passing out issues either.)
