My Swim/Run Danskin Report :(

So, I went down Saturday night with my 2 sisters in law (it was our very first Tri last year) and 2 new recruits.

Went to dinner Saturday night and had a great time, answered our 2 friends questions, it's funny not being the "newbie/newbie" now.

Fashion Report:
Pink Tri Tops with "Team Boyle" on them
Black Skirt over tri shorts

I had no 2 goals for this race: First, have fun! Second, I wanted a good swim (after bad,bad panic attack at Mooseman, I wanted to feel good in the water) and to practice my transitions (Um, 9+ minutes total at Mooseman, lots of room for improvement!)

Got in water, started off and had a great swim. Felt comfortable the whole time. Even after I got belted in the nose by a breaststroke person and practically had my goggles knocked off! Was able to concentrate on form (a first!) and felt great.

Got to T1, a little quicker than usual I think (haven't seen results yet) and out on bike.

Got on bike and right away something doesn't feel right. One mile in stop and realize I have a flat on the back....WTF...there are volunteers there and they said a guy is driving around to help with bike issues. I wait 20 minutes and he comes over....he is in a big rush to fix it, getting lots of calls for people needing help...he fixes it....I say "you are so awesome!"....he drives off, I clip in and....he was in such a rush he didn't get the tire on the wheel correctly...the wheel would not even MOVE. So I am a mile away from the start, wearing bike shoes and can't even push bike! WTF...start carrying bike back and this great guy insists on carrying it for me. We get to the area where all the bikes are coming in and out, there is a cop there, he makes me stand there, ok, I get it, it's really busy now.....10 minutes later, hey can I cross now, so I can get my bike fixed? No, not now.....15 minutes later...can I cross? No, not now...an hour freakin later he lets me cross once all the freakin bikes are out.

Go, get tire fixed but now CANNOT go on bike course. So, decided, to do the run anyway........

The silver lining was that I was able to cheer everyone...saw all my peeps going out on bike, coming back in, going out on run, coming back in.....my girlfriend who did it this year first was crying at the finish, so of course I joined her!

Dear Tri gods, please, please, please don't let this happen to me at Timberman.........it's ok as this race didn't matter, but at Timberman??????????

Time for a bike clinic? I bet if you go to LBS they will show you how to replace your tire. I'd then practice at home a few times!

Re: My Swim/Run Danskin Report :(
Julie - sorry for the flat/tire issue...Do practice replacing a flat/tire MORE until you get it. Having this worry in your mind during a half IM won't be fun. You have the dedication to ride so many hours and swim countless laps in a pool, why not learning how to replace a tire. You CAN DO IT. Good luck.

Wow Julie -- Bummer. At least your swim was good!! Keep pracicing the tire changes... you'll get it.

That's one way to avoid the huge hill on the bike course.....

Re: My Swim/Run Danskin Report :(
Julie--So sorry to hear about the tire problems. Sounds like you had a great day planned, and with your stellar attitude, you made the best of what you ended up with. Definitely a plus, by my reckoning.

I second what Yoshiko and others are saying. Practice and then practice more with the tire. I have the same problems when I get flats. I'm not even speedy with front tires, and rear tires are much harder for me. But I am practicing and it's slowly (very slowly) getting a little easier.

Way to turn some bad luck around by cheering your friends! Hopefully you got it out of the way before your big event! Consider this a good training day and get your bike checked out. Just practice changing your tire a few times.

Re: My Swim/Run Danskin Report :(
Julie, Julie, Julie:

Before Timberman you MUST take that bike in garage and deflate both tires. I got a well deserved lecture from a friend of mine about this when I admitted besides crashing, getting a flat was my biggest concern going into Lake Stevens. I can't believe how hard my heart was beating when I let the air out. Too funny. I had gone to one class to change a tire months ago and the stupid teacher basically did it for me so really I had only seen it done.

I got the first done in 20 minutes, 10 minutes for the second one. I am so glad I did this. I didn't share this long story in my RR but the day before the race at bike drop off I took my bike out of the car and went to pump up my tires. My pump broke the stem so I had to change the tire, in 95 degree heat. It took me less than 5 minutes and I had the confidence going into the race that I could handle it if I got a flat.

Sorry your Danskin wasn't everything you had hoped for, that just sucks, especially since it is a pricey race and makes for a very long weekend!!! But you got a great swim in right? How was your run????

What a bummer-okay, that's a complete understatement! Good for you though, doing the run and cheering for your friends. That shows major character. Good job making the best out of the situation.

As far as you need to. While CO2 does escape from the tire faster than air, we're talking days before it would loose enough pressure that you couldn't ride it.

And sorry for your misfortune!! I looked for you at the transitions but didn't spot you! There were a LOT of women there!

Sorry, but you can't rely on CO2 as a crutch. If the hole in your tube is more than a tiny pin-*****, you'll just flat out again within a mile. Then you're two miles from your car [/i]and[/i] you're out of CO2. Learn to fix a flat.

Bummer about the race, but glad your swim went well and your SIL's had a good time.

Re: My Swim/Run Danskin Report :(
Sorry your race didn't work out as planned. Good for you for doing the run anyway!!
I had my first flat last week out on the T course - rear tire. I had never changed one myself even after having LBS show me how.
It took me 20 min - between remembering what LBS showed me and the directions on the box the tube comes ( I couldn't remember how to get the tube/tire back on the rim without this) in I was able to successfully do it without freaking out. I feel so much more comfortable in handling this now. Those CO2 pumps are pretty cool and fast! Use the directions on the box your tube comes in and remember to take a quick look at the tire - mine had a puncture all the way through it so I had to head back to LBS to get a new tire.
Good luck!

Re: My Swim/Run Danskin Report :(
Julie - I'm so sorry to hear about your experience I'm glad the swim went well for you though, and I'm sure your friends really appreciated you cheering them on.

I haven't raced yet, but I have had to deal with the flat issue already, and am grateful that I did. It took me a while to re-remember all the little details involved in getting that thing fixed (I used to do it a lot back in college, but that was a couple decades ago) but I got it up and running again.

I think both of us are due for some more practice on this...but you especially with Timberman coming up. I wish you the best

Re: My Swim/Run Danskin Report :(
how to learn to change a tire REALLY quickly...

let the air out. now imagine that you are on a dirt track in africa. within seconds of you stopping, you will be completely surrounded by a ring of about 60 children. they will be afraid of you, but also trying to touch you and everything you own without you noticing.

adults will notice the crowd, and come over for a look. the ladies will be examining you closely, and begin having conversations amongst themselves, including gestures, about whether you are married/have children. this relates to the size of your breasts, and the fact that you have been sitting on a bike seat.

men will come up, and want to help. in africa, they have steel bikes that are fixed with hammers/large rocks from the side of the road, so it is prudent to try and avoid these men touching your bike. this is not so difficult to accomplish, as they will also be trying to ask you to marry them, to touch/look at your bike and any other kit they can see, and to steal your tools.

eventually an older man will come over, and disperse the crowd of 'common people' by launching into them whilst thrashing a large stick around. he will expect to become your new best friend for his pains, will want to walk you to the next 'town' (gathering of about 4 houses) to have it fixed, where you will be expected to buy him a beer.

it really, really works. i have been riding bikes for years, and never ever figured out the tire thing - i couldn;t even pump air into them. after one experience like the above, i learnt pretty quick, and pretty soon i had it down so that i could get off my bike, get the wheel off, change the tube and have it all back on before more than a few kids realised what was going on.

just keep on practising at home - it really is easy once you've done it a few times, and i never ever thought i'd be the one saying that!

<HR>

Julie- Of course you're not hopeless. You absolutely CAN do it-- you just need to practice. If you can raise children, train for a HIM, be a successful employee at whatever-it-is-you-do, you can change a tire.

And frankly, you should be MORE scared to ride something that someone ELSE has fixed-- they don't have the stake in doing it properly that you do.... (though I know what you're saying). Besides, even if you do it wrong, the worst thing is that you'll get another flat...

Can you find someone to spend some time with you to learn how? You're not gonna feel comfortable asking lots of questions, trying it over and over again at the LBS probably- especially if they're busy. But someone who will come to your place and just spend the time. (Offer beer....they'll come....)
