OW swim near Charleston SC?

I am coming to near Charleston in a few weeks for business. There is no way I am leaving there without squeezing a real ow swim in the ocean!! Is there a beach where I can swim some distance, preferably with a life guard nearby? Or better yet is there any group swimming in the area on Monday after 5pm? I have never done a real swim in the ocean and probably not a good idea to swim by myself, other than just going 25m back and forth million times. Thanks!

The Charleston County Park on the Isle of Palms is guarded. If you walk up the beach to around 30th Ave, you can swim toward the pier (and the guarded swim area) parallel to the beach for about a one mile swim. I would try to go at low tide and if it's windy, don't bother as the waves will be too high. The good thing about low tide is you will be in about 5 feet of water when you get past the breakers so you can stand if you have to.

Yeee. I think I'm going to believe that all the sharks are over on the east coast this weekend. That should make west coast swims slightly less stressful.

As for shark repellents, I have no clue if they work, but this electronic shark shield[/URL" target="_blank"> looks interesting. If it works, it seems more practical than a chemical-based alternative.

roostertrax... does something like this keep you out of the water for a few days? It would me.

OMG, that is approx. where I was plannning to swim...I don't know now. Is there such thing as shark repellant?
Also, is 5-6pm at low tide? Mmm, maybe I should stick with swimming in a white wall with black line after all. Thanks for the info. anyway.

I don't know when you'll be here, but on Thursday and Friday of this week low tide will be around 5:30-6:00. Let me know if you need any recommendations for pools in the area.

Triandstopme - Being a diver, I know there are sharks nearby every day. But... when you get two bites in one day...yeah...I've been a bit edgy. I try not to swim near dusk and dawn and if I see bait fish jumping, I'm done for the day.
