Pumpkinman RR (long :-))

Hi tri-peeps,
after a bit of a hyatis (sp?) including Timberman sprint, a vacation and getting my 4 yr old off to pre-school - i'm back!

So the inaugural Pumpkinman was on Sunday in South Berwick ME and it was awesome! Well organized, a great course and a ton of fun!

Swim: 500 meters (probably measured a little long) with a killer run to transition!!! about 100 meters straight up a grassy hill - phew! Way to spike the heart rate!
I had a good swim, stayed with the mid to front of my pack, second wave. I was a little disapointed to see 11:57 on my watch but my super speedy friend did it in 9, most of the times were in the 10-12 min range, added to it was the run up the hill, so total time 13:36.

Bike: 17 miles.
I decided to push the big chain ring, last tri of the season, figured i would give it everything. Strong headwind for the first 5-6 miles, but I averaged 17.4 and made it in 58ish minutes.
Saw DH heading around the first bend of the run as I came in from the bike, and another friend as he was heading down the first hill on the run, then I rounded the corner into transition to be met with mad cheering from a bunch of our friends and family all sporting Team Wicked gear (our charity tri team).

T2
When I got to my rack I realized there were only 2 other bikes there - woohoo! I made a quick decision to have as fast a transition as possible and went without socks, 48 seconds, but maybe not the best idea!

Run 3.1 miles
had a great run, I was passed by one person, a woman in an older age group, I passed lots of guys and one other woman in my age group (she was the only woman to pass me on the bike). Legs felt good, the expected blister started smarting at about mile 2 but I kept telling myself that this was the last tri and it was supposed to hurt!!! So I pushed through and made it to the finish in 23:58, 7:43 pace.

Total time 1:38:05
3rd in my age group of 16 (W 30-34) I have never placed before so I was extremely excited about that!! Got a little engraved plaque (not sure what to do with it now...)

Anyway it was awesome, highly reccomend it for next year, we're heading out of the country next September but we're reconsidering our date to be around for this race!!!

Thanks for reading!

OO -

Congrats on the placing! Glad to hear the inaugral event was a success (and - that the rain mostly held off, I hear).... That's a pretty spiffy run time, by the way - not too shabby for a standalone 5K, letalone at the end of a tri. Sounded like a pretty rolling/hilly bike course as well - so nice job on that.

Mount your plaque with pride! Or ... stuff it in a box and put it in the attic, then pull it out 40 years from now for a big smile...

Knew quite a few locals doing the race (mostly women, and a few boys on the swim team), so was interested to see the results - everyone I spoke to enjoyed the event.

Reg.

Olivia, congrats on the hardware. It's nice to hear good things about another local race. This is one I am putting on the calendar for next year. Your 5K times is just smokin'. Nice job!

Great race Olivia. I actually participated as well and would also strongly recommend the race - they really did an excellent job!

I'll add my RR here for anyone that is interested.

I started off in the third wave and had an excellent swim - including my run up the monster hill of 150 meters or so, it only took me 10:27. I got out of T1 with no major issues and took off on my bike. I felt pretty strong on the bike, though the rolling hills/wind took a bit more out of my legs than I would have liked. However, I still managed to come in with a 49:29 for the 17 mile ride. I had another smooth transition and took off running - I felt surprisingly good after pushing through the wind and hills on the bike and I was totally surprised to see that I finished the 5k (which included a good sized hill that lasted approx.1/2 to 3/4 mile) in 19:51.

I actually won the M20-24 AG (which I was really happy about) and came in 12th overall! I guess I had a pretty successful 1st season of triathlons - a 1st, a 2nd and a 3rd place AG finish in my first 3 races!

Once again, well done Olivia and thank you to the race director/volunteers - they really did put on a good event.
