Did 1st tri today

Coming from a bike racer snob.

500y swim Almost last out of the water
15 mile bike. did it in 30;00
5k run. 16:40.

Good things

Chicks in bikini's.
Good food,
fun family atmospere.
Easy to be a noob at and not guess discouraged.

Bad things:

Multisport athletes always scared me(I respect them but they still scare me), maybe it was their eractic riding, or the sleeveless jerseys or the fact that they swim.

Today I figured it out.
1)they are all so happy.
They did the tri and finished in the last fourth of the big field and they were all so proud of their accomplishments -they also got a shiny metal Maybe it is just my bike racing snobness but if I earn a metal I want it to mean something.

And this whole no looser thing, I don't care if you PR, you still came in last. Call me a bike racer snob(which I know I am)

A lot of cheating. Whenever I passed someone they would hop on my wheel until the next hill.

Prizes-I don't need any biking stuff. If you win the biking leg then you probably don't need another pair of friggin sun glasses. Just give me the cash.

No skill/tactics-cycling you need to be able to hold you line, know how to climb, be comfortable going 40 mph into a corner while bumping into people 3 inches away, and have a dictionary of tactics. A tri tactics is to hammer the whole time except the last part of the bike.

Yeah Call me a bike racer snoob, but I'll keep racing my bike. are all tri like this or did I just hit a bad one?

They didn’t know my shoulder was broken so I just kept riding

People don't Understand how hard it is to win a bike race...That my problem...I make it look easy

Yes, they are all like that. You don't need that ****. Go back to bike racing and never look back. I'm sure you will be much happier.

(I know we will be.)

Re: Did 1st tri today
Smokin bike, but yeah - it is a totally different culture than the biker world.

the main thing is it's an individual sport. No team action going on - hence the perceived "lack of skill" that you felt for the bike. That's not entirely true, but I get where it comes from.

When you step up distance - oly, HIM, IM, you will find out that there is actually an exceptional amount of skill (esp HIM + ), but it's not the same skill set you've been used to.

It's a different world, for sure. You have some killer bike speed and 16min 5k? that's fab dude. So maybe you could actually place in these.. maybe try a longer distance? the longer the distance, the more competitive the folks.

But I hate to tell you it's still generally a happy-supportive-feel-good-crowd, so if that bugs ya... maybe try a Duathlon? they tend to be a "bit" more hardcore? (I hear, never done them FWIW)

Re: Did 1st tri today
If you improve your swim so you can hang with the pro/elite crowd you might feel more at home. But still, the bike is always going to be a time trial, that's what it's designed to be.

Hopping on your wheel huh? Na, they're not triathletes, they're wheel sucking roadie triathlete wanabes who need a team to pull them along because they do not have the strength (mental or physical) to go out and hammer it out alone.

Re: Did 1st tri today
Wow ... you have enlightened me ... I now realise my HIM was worth absolutely nil. Was followed by the kayak and by the motorcycle while doing those killer hills. Absolutely no one to pull me up those hills, one that I climbed and then later descended at 70k. Had only been cycling and swimming (first OW experience, mass start too) for a few months ... what was a thinking!? Came in dead last. And NO medal at the end, not even for finishing. Lousy, lousy ... nope, nope, nope, this race had absolutely no merit ...

And that IM I did last year? I should humbly apologise to the Canadian Diabetes Society for having raised all that money. First and foremost, I should have thought about ME as an athlete and what I was getting out of it ... should have been training more instead of taking the time to fund-raise.

I should pull out of IM Kentucky too ... what dat gonna bring me and the Cancer Society? Yeah, I should withdraw already ...

But I'm too busy grinning from ear to ear.

There are good races and bad races, good athletes and snobby grumpy ones.

Have fun cycling, Crazy1. We do admire your speed though ...

Sally

Re: Did 1st tri today
It's just a different crowd, sort of like how cyclocross has its own different kinds of personalites, as does mountain bike racing.

For people who race all summer together who are trying to place their best or win, it's a similar crew to bike racing--fit people who train a lot and hate to lose. Because you can do the event at your own pace, they attract a larger cross section of people and promoters have figured out that making events inclusive is the only way to pay for all the high fixed costs required to put on large events. Since the bulk of the people who are paying the bills don't care about prizes or prize money, it's really pushed aside, it's just the nature of the sport. I think a lot of it has really just been borrowed from running, the age groups and medals and suchlike are quite similar.

I have found some peace with myself doing duathlons and trying to improve and meet my own goals. If I had the time to learn a new sport, I'd mess with the swimming also, but I don't really care enough right now.

I also enjoy banging shoulders in bike races and cyclocross, but I'm reducing the likelihood of breaking another collarbon and feeling like I'm in good shape for a middle age man, so it's all good. The other thing about the multisports events is they are great for bringing the family.

Of course its different, but so what every sport is different. It's been good for me to have to set goals myself and work toward them rather than always measuring progress by who I beat on a particular day.

Re: Did 1st tri today
so how did you end up placing? If you rode 30 mph, that should have netted you about 3 minutes to the good and the 16.40 should have also been at or near the top, so assuming you can't lose too much time in a 1/3 mile swim I'm guessing you did well?

I never see anyone average near 50kph in a tri, if the course is correct you should have close to national class speed in a time trial, I'd assume you could break 50 or be close in a 40K, a time which won our state championship a few weeks ago, as well as the Canadain provincials.

Re: Did 1st tri today
Kind of interesting that you list yourself as a pro bike racer, then disparage those who are complete amateurs. Do all pro bike racers tend to swim like drowning rats - or just you? Perhaps you will do our local sprint featuring top caliber Olympic athletes. It's doubtful you will be bumping shoulders with them though as you would already be miles behind after the swim.

No offense, but I doubt many pro roadies can hang in there with a pro triathlete in a triathlon.

"At the same time I doubt many pro-tri could be me in a bike race."

You might be surprised. Go watch an ITU triathlon and see if any of the elite triathletes measure up.

And I was only explaining what I feel and know ... that I love this sport and that all the people here on CR-MS have been thoroughly encouraging, incredibly supportive, kind and wonderfully uplifting. Doesn't matter speed, age, distance, or experience. We share everything, good and bad, and I thank God for you all since you have helped me to get through these last two tumultuous years. I have so much respect and admiration for all of you ...

Crazy1, I know you don't want to dampen our party on purpose - you just don't understand us (yet), but if you lighten up and just enjoy instead of only compete, then you will understand the fundamental basis of what drives us to do this sport and become better people.

Jump in our circle and we can all dance together!

Hip hip hooray, hip hip hooray! Crazy1, Crazy1, jump in, jump in, jump in!

(Don't worry, the water's not too deep and there are only a few stingy kind of water creatures and some other prickly something or others, don't know what they are ... lots of algae though, but they don't bite )
