Biking just wasn't meant to be!

It was a beautiful day yesterday - nice and sunny, cool, with a light breeze. I had a 2-hour bike ride on my plan, so I set off for the country (from our town of 5000, that isn't very far!), I rode through the local Terry Fox Run by accident, and was headed out a country road away from home. I passed some barking dogs, some road-kill, and then, BOOM, my rear-tire just totally falls apart!! I've had a puncture before, this wasn't one of those. My tire was empty in a second or two. No chance I could keep riding with it. Being 15km from home, I called my wife, who came and picked me up. Later on, a friend called, said we could patch up my tire, and go for a ride, so off I went. We put a patch on the tube, tried to put something over the tire, and off we went. Got to the edge of town, and BOOM, tire was gone again. Oh well. I just wasn't fated to go for a ride yesterday. On the bright side, I got to make a solo-trip to the LBS, which allows a lot more latitude than when the wife comes along. I hope everyone else had better luck!

Off to change a tire!!

Brad

At least you got to go shopping for bike stuff, not a complete waste of a day.

Gracious me, never call your wife unless you have a railroad spike through your face or a sucking chest wound on the side of the road. Better get a little bag with a couple tubes, a pump and a tire lever and leave that phone home, it may ring when you are enjoying yourself.

I wonder what exactly happened to your tire--it sounds like gross over inflation, having the tube stuck under the wire bead or hitting something sharp in the road that tore the side of the tire.

I've had hundreds of flats, but hardly ever one of that severity, sounds like a once in a lifetime flat.

Tire blowouts are common this time of year, especially if you pump up your tire early when it's still chilly outside. Then after riding, with the road and warmer air heating your tire up, plus rims hot from braking ... Boom!
