Speed question: Road bike vs. Mountain bike

I am planning to do my first triathlon next year. I have a mountain bike and went 9 miles in 36 minutes over rolling terrrain a couple days ago ( I rarely ride a bike). I checked some results for the triathlon I want to enter next year and realize that the entire field would have blown me away. I am in good shape so far as running is concerned but was wondering just how much difference there is between a road bike and a mountain bike. I am pretty discouraged when seeing those results.

Re: Speed question: Road bike vs. Mountain bike
First don't worry about others. Some will be in the 25+ mph range. But, there will be people slower then you too.

A road bike will be faster. But, I have seen MTB riders in the race beat a lot of people on road bikes. So the person makes a difference too.

Do you have slicks on your bike? Smooth higher pressure tires will help you gain speed over knobies.

Re: Speed question: Road bike vs. Mountain bike
I did my first tri on a mountain bike....I was blown away by most of the road bikes, but I still managed to finish midway in my division. The next year, I did it on an entry level road bike and was much faster. Partly because I trained more, but much had to do with the bike. There is nothing wrong with just entering on your mountain bike...I would definately invest in the slick tires.

Go for it!

Re: Speed question: Road bike vs. Mountain bike
The differences can be significant. MTB tires have way more rolling resistance, and the typical gearing will not allow you to go as fast in your top gear.

I have some friends who ride MTBs all the time. A couple years ago we rode from Vail to Breckenridge going over Vail Pass - about 40 miles. On my road bike with modest effort I averaged 18 and thought it was kinda slow. On their MTBs they averaged 12 and thought they had gone fast.

Yes, different tires can help improve speed, but the gearing still won't allow these bikes to reach the speeds of a road bike - plus the riding position is more upright and much less aero.

Yes, a very competent MTB biker can ride faster than a less skilled road biker, but it doesn't sound like you ride all that much.

Re: Speed question: Road bike vs. Mountain bike
I rode an old steel mountain bike with slicks in my first two races last year. I finished MOP in one, and 6th overall in the other. Before you spend a bunch of money on a road bike to gain 1 mph, spend a bunch of time building your legs to gain 3 mph.

My legs weren't tired at all - nor was I winded at all. The only thing that really hurt at all when I finished was the seat of my pants. To answer your question, yes I have knobby tires and felt like I was going pretty fast - just like the Vail rider said. I do intend to ride more and get the muscles in better biking condition.

Should I look into a 27" bike and how many gears would be best? Thanks everyone for your input here

Smooth tires will help. You'll be surprised, though, how much faster you go in a race, just from the adrenaline. If you're doing 15 mph on an easy ride without pushing yourself, you'll do just fine in the race. Definitely not BOP.

Re: Speed question: Road bike vs. Mountain bike
I just got my first road bike yesterday and the difference is amazing. In my first (and only, to date) race, I used my hybrid and averaged 18.9 mph and had to work REALLY hard for that. On the first road bike ride, it was short, but I was hitting over 20 with not nearly the effort I would have put forth to reach 20 on the hybrid. I am IN LOVE with my new bike!

Re: Speed question: Road bike vs. Mountain bike
mule, for the first try, just go with the mtb. I did my first sprint with a hybrid, and had a blast...about a quarter of the bikes were non-road. then, you'll really feel the need to get a faster bike. the only thing I changed were the thin slick tires, and clipless pedals

Re: Speed question: Road bike vs. Mountain bike
road bikes will have about 10 cogs in the rear and two in the front, for about 17 useful gears. The wheels are no longer 27" but are slightly smaller at 700cm.

You will do fine on a mtb, get some cheap slick tires and just go ride. You don't sound like you do much riding as it is, so use this as a base line effort.

A road bike might be good for a mile or two per hour perhaps at your current speed. Getting on a training program for the bike should get you up to 18-20 mph on your present bike without spending a dime.

Re: Speed question: Road bike vs. Mountain bike
I started my tri training on a MTB. I had knobby tires. It was heavier and slower than a road bike, but I hadn't ridden a bike in years, so I didn't really know the difference. I just started riding and training. It was all I had at the time. The lower gears helped me on the hills when first starting out since my legs were pretty weak. I eventually decided to buy a road bike 2 weeks before my first tri. I fell in love with cycling once I got my new bike. I hated it before with my MTB. So, for me, it changed my attitude about cycling. I love riding my bike now! If you like it, then stick with the MTB for now. Get slick tires and just train. You might decide soon that you want to invest in a road bike or you might decide to wait a while. Yes, a road bike will be faster than a MTB, but if you don't train, you'll get smoked on a road bike as well. You will ride faster in a race. I average about 15 mph in my training rides, but I average 17-18 mph in my races.

Don't worry about what others times are. You just need to train and get stronger and you will be faster whether you are on a MTB or a road bike. Most road bikes will have 9-10 in back and 2 in front. You can get a compact if you have lots of hills. I'd train on your current bike and see what progress you make first.
