Swimming and lower back injury?

So I've got this f-ing lower back injury. It sucks and I'm beyond p!ssed off about it. I've been down for three weeks now, with only 6 or 7 runs in that time. None since last Monday I was supposed to run my first ever half this coming Sunday, but it's just not happening.

I'm starting PT tomorrow, to hopefully get me back to functioning. I want to still do a half, hopefully in Vegas on 12/2.

Swimming is probably my best option for exercise right now. I'm going crazy. Is this a reasonable exercise to do with a lower back injury? My docs all seem to think it is muscular, and have me on muscle relaxers to try and combat it.

Water running? Is this a better option than swimming? I gotta do something. I can feel my fitness that I worked my @ss of for this summer fading away, and I swear I'm getting fatter by the moment ( ). What would you all recommend? Not working out has turned me into a depressed cranky witch. My poor hubby

Re: Swimming and lower back injury?
I have lower back pain as well and tend to let pain guide me. Be careful about exercising on the pain killers as they can mask pain. Ice therapy is very helpful for muscle issues as well.

If I am thinking clearly then I view injuries as my body telling me it's time to slow down and take it easier.

Good luck.

Re: Swimming and lower back injury?
wyrillco,
Hang in there. I just had surgery on my lower back one week ago today (Tuesday). The doc told me no exercise... NOTHING...other than walking all I want...for SIX weeks. I've had back issues for a long time. All relating to bulges on two discs...which are what the doc finally removed last week. But, when those bulges have caused muscle tension/pain in my lower back I'd always do a few laps of backstroke when I was at the pool. If you pain is muscular give the backstroke a try. I've convinced lots of people to try it and they always say that it does relieve the pain. Good luck.

Re: Swimming and lower back injury?
I went swimming last week and found it bothered my back. Because my core muscles are weakened by the injury I was tending to arch my back instead of keeping it nice and flat. Watch your form and stop if you feel any pain. You might have to wait until you strengthen those mucles at PT before going back into the pool. I've got to figure out what the fook I am going to do to get better. We've already been wiped out by medical bills this year so last thing we need is another person getting back treatments in the family.

There's a lot PT can do for a bulging disc. There's a lot ice and ibuprofen can do too. Be glad it's not herniated. Have you had an MRI to be sure? My poor DW has two herniated and two bulging discs and has come a long way with PT, ice, ibuprofen and exercises at home. They told her resting it is the worst thing to do while strengthening is the best. I got her a BOSU ball.

Re: Swimming and lower back injury?
I would suggest that you get the opinion of a specialist (I was referred to a neurological surgeon and actually got three opinions all of which concurred). After examining my MRI my surgeon explained that many bulges do in fact recede on their own and/or through PT and other treatment. But your PT needs to know what he/she is dealing with. Of the two bulges I had removed, my surgeon pointed out on the MRI that one was so extensive (nearly herniated) that it would never recede on its own. He felt the smaller bulge could possibly recede and wouldn?t normally perform surgery to remove it. But since he was in there he?d remove it.

Now, the surgery I just had was very minimally invasive as back surgery goes (this was my second). The incision is/was less than 1 inch but I was under general anesthesia. The procedure took about a half an hour in the morning and I was actually discharged in the late afternoon. I was up and walking within an hour after anesthesia wore off. After a couple of days the only pain that remained was from the incision itself. Now I just have to wait about six weeks while scar tissue forms over where the bulges were cut from. That scar tissue is vital to the future integrity of the disc(s).

Re: Swimming and lower back injury?
sorry to say this.... the only injury i picked up from 10 years of competitive swimming was a lower back problem.

this was because i was swimming butterfly every day, and doing fly drills, which i don;t image is what you have in mind.

but it depends on your stroke. if you have your head up, looking forward whilst swimming freestyle, it puts a slight strain on your lower back. as does swimming backstroke with your head up, looking towards your toes.

stay as flat as possible, with your head in the same relative position as if you were standing up and looking forward, if you're going to swim.

good luck and i hope you find exercise that works for you. and that your bakc gets better

The doc will probably want MRI.
