Re: No ipod enforcement
I'm supprised that no one has mentioned the snob factor. It is just rude to race with headphones. It basically says, "Hey I am in my own little world and don't give a dam if you racing or not." It is just rude. As many of you know I am a pretty good bike racer and if anyone showed up in the middle of the bike race with an Ipod, there would be no mercy. Yeah, sometime we have headphones to communicate intra-team but there is not noise all of the time.

Yes, I have gotten hurt when someone's earbuds fell out in the start of my a running race and got wrapped around my arm.

Ultimately if it is against the rules it is cheating. It is no different than PED

Guys we are all friends here.

I don't care what you listen or don't listen to as you race.

All I want to see is you happy and healthy at the finish line, and if you are in my age group, that you finish behind me.

Hey I was DRAFTING!!! It's a perfectly legitimate racing strategy.

Not trying to be a jerk here, but if it is against the rules of the race then it should not matter how they enforce it because you have no business doing it. If you don't like the rules of the race, then it is probably in your best interest to find another race.

Drafting is against the rules, but what if I don't get caught..is it okay then?

I think it's totally appropriate to question authority. And us pro headphone wearers have every right to question why it's so important that we not use them so we can argue the other side. However, if what people are saying here and it's the insurance companies making the rules, than these arguements need to be sent to the insurance companies, not necessarilly the RD.

And why is it that those who are anti-headphones think we are all jerks and shouldn't be able to race when us pro-headphones think it's fine for you to race without them? I have been pushed and shoved by people not wearing headphones because they are in their own zone (and I always start in a race where I am suppose to start). I have had water cups thrown at me by people not wearing headphones, and I have had cars enter a closed course because a volunteer wasn't paying attention. Racing is a semi dangerous sport in and of itself, headphones or not.

I finally get the real reason why the pros complain about the small draft zone....too many distractions.

Amen! I have never had an issue with someone wearing headphones. I've had lots of issues with people not wearing headphones. They should ban people not wearing headphones!

You have every right to question authority. The RD has every right to DQ or penalize you for not following the rules of the race. If you'd like to see the rules changed, then work with USATF to change the policy, but don't think that you can just ignore any rule that you don't like. In the end, it is every competitor's decision to make, but you can't complain when there are consequences for not following the rules.

Would you wear a wetsuit in a race that wasn't wetsuit legal just because you'd rather be more bouyant?

Re: No ipod enforcement
I am not "anti-headphone" nor have I ever had any trouble with people using them. Questioning authority is your right, but rules are rules, think of entering a race as being a guest in somebodies house, if they asked you to take your shoes off before you walk on the carpet would you do it? or would you argue with them? Usually when registering for a race, there are a very clear set of rules available to all interested in signing up. some races have headphone rules, others don't. if it is such a big deal, then select races that allow headphones, most marathons and road races do while most triathlons do not. A big reason is insurance as mentioned before. Another reason is that it is downright dangerous and taboo in any circle of real cyclists to use headphones while cycling, why? because you can't hear traffic. Rather than letting people use them on the run, but not the bike, they have banned them from most tri's.

If you do not want to play by the rules it is your right and privaledge to not play.
