Swimming: I must confess

I swam diligently all summer long. I liked, but did not love it. I made huge progress and finished a HIM, in spite of learning how to do freestyle starting last February. I swore I was going to continue one weekly swim during the winter. I am primarily a runner.

I hate to say it, but my last swim was the HIM on September 9.

I continued to bike once a week for 30 miles ( a commute to work), until I had a flat last week, and now it's too dark early anyway. I am back to running 100% of my workouts.

This is really stupid, but the prospect of getting wet is not appealing, and I think that is why I do not get myself in the pool. I need a race to force me into the water.

IC, I must admit that I've done almost exactly the same thing, down to the date of the HIM

Re: Swimming: I must confess
I haven't swam either since my 1/2 IM last July. I am motivated while preparing for a race (sort of enough to get me by), but I absolutly hate lap swimming, and swimming in the winter time when it's cold out. And I dread going to the pool, and having to deal with 4 or 5 people in the same lane and having to constantly worry about running into others....now if I could go and have a lane all by myself, would help a lot, but still wouldn't like it much. But you put me out in open water, and I love that kind of swimming...heck, I would open water swim everyday if it were possible, but not here in Indiana. Real swimmers are just a different breed I guess. I think a lot of this is if a person grew up swimming, or being a late bloomer....which I am a late bloomer and started about 4 years ago when I was 44 years old.

I guess I will try to get back into the habit of swimming at least 1 or 2 times a week when I start off season wieght training...or maybe not, LOL.

I definitely don't feel so guilty now. I haven't been in the pool since August. Ouch.
I keep telling myself that I need to get with the program and start swimming but I just haven't. I'd rather run or ride my bike.

Oh good, I'm not the only one! I haven't even checked in around here for a couple of months, because I have been lazing around so much.

When it's cold outside I just want to build a fire, get under a blanket on the couch with my wife and... read a book. (or something)

Am I the only one here who likes swimming?

I used to HATE and DREAD it. One evening after a magical conversation with CS when he explained there's more to the "kick workout" than using the kickboard, I suddenly improved and began having fun. I haven't touched the kickboard since July.

Maybe a Hot new swim suit will motivate you?

No I usually like swiming. Outside Mongo-Bigtime. Inside not so much, but I'll cope

Maybe LOOKING at some hot new swimsuits (with models in them) is what you need? An empty pool can be booooring.

getting wet on a regular basis is best way to keep/improve those times... need find the fun. masters is big fun for me. finding some buds to swim with, that's fun too.

Oh my no. I LOVE to swim. I wish I could swim in open water more, but I even like swimming in the pool. Sometimes it's hard to get in initially, especially if it's cold outside. But, often I'll warm up in the sauna for 5-10 minutes, and then the water feels very refreshing.

It helps to have planned sets or better yet, someone to swim with. But, if you swim alone, at least devise a plan to make it more interesting. I use the masters team sets - they post 3/week so you can always pick and choose from them. Or, steal some sets from the workout posts here.

Re: Swimming: I must confess
I used to dread going swimming... but just like everything else, when you start doing it on a regular basis (and sometimes it is the ONLY thing you can do due to injuries), it becomes a routine/habbit. Now I like swimming. A group workout will definately help. I am really struggling right now in water but telling myself just go and swim for 30 minutes for a recovery from running, when I don't feel up to it. Once you get there, and after a few 100's, you feel better and want to work hard to improve. A written workout to me is a must to get me focused.

No....I'm primarily a swimmer, who runs...
and used to cycle....but want to start cycling again.

All I have is a mtn bike. I figure for my first tri or three, I can still get away with that one, plus get some time to save $$ for a road bike.

I read the posts on here about people getting "high" from runnin and am soooo jealous, until I realize that I get that from swimming, and they don't.

Getting in the water in the morning isn't too bad for me, cause my pool is so warm (gym pool), but I have a cooler pool to use on weekends with the master's group.

Group workouts: big plus
HAving someone else write the workouts (coach): massive plus
Doing it all in the morning so that you're finished working out when everyone else is just starting: biggest plus of all.

Nope. I absolutely LOVE swimming. I would rather swim than run or bike. I swim 3x a week (2200-3000 meters each) and I am not even training for anything. I just like the feel of the water.
