Advice for 1st time marathon runner...

What advice can all of you marathon veterans give me? I am doing the Chicago in 2 weeks and getting anxious, excited and nervous!

Enjoy it.

Run smart; don't do anything differently than you have while training.
Its going to be a huge spectacle and the crowd really gets behind you. Avoid starting too fast - its easy to do with all the excitement.

I'll be there too!

Now that's something you don't hear a lot.

Don't confuse quitting with stopping. If you have to stop, rest, walk, check in at the medical tent, by all means do so. Sometimes a little attention to a problem is all it takes to resume the event. Change goals. If you are shooting for a 4:30 time and things aren't going well, a 5:00 time is fine.

And most of all, again I have to say, don't go out to fast. It is harder to avoid than you might think.

Have a great time and try to relax during these last 2 weeks before the big day! This is my 4th marathon and I'm really nervous too, but you just have to trust the training, set a reasonable pace goal and then stick with it - or readjust if required.

Good luck - the spectators truly are amazing!
