stomach issues

I have been trying to train for my first 5K run and eventually a marathon in September by running almost every day. The problem is, I can only run in the morning or I get really bad stomach pains/cramps. In the morning before I run I usually have a bowl of granola-like cereal with skim milk. I've been trying to eat bland lunches, like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or turkey, and i've even tried just having a granola bar and banana, but I still get the really bad pains, so bad that I have to stop and walk numerous times and it ruins my run.

Any advice for afternoon meals before a run??

Thanks.

Re: stomach issues
anything you eat is going to stimulate your digestive tract and put it in motion, so you could try giving yourself more time to digest your food. Some people aren't bothered at all by eating. I'm sure other readers will be able to advise you on what works for them. I eat a banana on my way to the gym, run for an hour, bike for a half hour, lift weights. But I'm old, and that's what works for me.

Granola has quite a bit of fiber, and that can be painful to digest, especially when you're running. The pounding action of each foot strike can accelerate the movement of food through the colon. Can you try a different breakfast food with less fiber? Then you would know if it's the timing or the fiber ot both.

Milk is not a real good pre-race beverage. It's high in "renal solutes" - too much protein and electrolytes for your kidneys to handle as you're sweating and getting a little dehydrated. After you run, skim milk is excellent for those very same reasons: protein for muscle repair; electrolytes to keep you from bonking; milk sugar to re-energize.

I'm glad that your're diet conscious. Good luck on your 5K.

Re: stomach issues
meatball, you are not alone. There is a multi billion industry based on gastrointestinal illnesses. Have dinner with a group of senior citizens and the conversation will invariably turn to digestion problems. See? It gets worse.

The intestines are very sensitive to mood. In fact, 95% of the serotonin in your body is in the guts' network of nerves. A "gut-wrenching" experience is exactly that.

So, if you have constant stress, someone who gets on your nerves, it may very likely manifest itself in your intestines. My brother suffered terribly from irritable bowel syndrome. Then he got a divorce. He called me up shortly after that, in tears, saying that he hadn't felt any intestinal pain all day, for the first time in years. It was like a new day had dawned.

not every digestive problem is food-related. It certanly can be; but not always.

I too can only run in the am. I've found that if I eat any meals, I'm shot as far as running goes. Too get rid of the early am hunger, I eat 2-3 crackers or 2 bites of a healthy power-type bar with some grape or cranberry juice and it's just enough to hold me over until I can eat post-run.
