Nauseous For Hours After Long Run - WHY?

I have been running for about 9 months and am training for a half marathon. I usually run 4 or 5 miles at a 9 min pace. I am adding mileage to my long runs on the weekend and each time I run over an hour (6 or more miles) I am nauseous (but never get sick) and my intenstines sound like I have a horrible GI virus when I am done running. This stays with me for 6 hours or more after running. Initially I thought it was a hydration issue so I watch that and wear a fuel belt with powerade in it and I drink along the way. Then I thought it was the food before - maybe to much - maybe to little. I eat a light breakfast before hand (1 toast with a small amount of PB on it). I have run shorter distances with coffee and a full breakfast and have had no problems. I was eating a little more (2 egg omelette) an hour before but thought perhaps it was to heavy so I have lightened up to one toast with the PB.

Does anyone have any insight into this? I need to get my long runs up to 10 -12 miles but I end up loosing the whole day because of this and it really makes me not enjoy running at this distance. I may not do another HM but this one I will be doing - HELP!

Have you tried eating as soon as you come in from your run, a banana or more toast with PB. Also you may need to slow your pace down for your longer runs.

Try eating 90 minutes to 2 hours pre-run. Choose easy to digest foods like bananas or other fruits. If you can't eat earlier then go for a shake or smoothie ahead of time instead of solid food. Pay attention to what you eat the night before. Dairy and protein can have residual effect the next morning since it is slower to digest. Add more fiber during the day to your diet. A good rule of thumb is 3 grams or more per serving. Good luck!

Do you dilute the powerade at all? I know that straight Gatorade can give me a stomach ache when I drink it during a long run. It's a lot better when I cut it with water.

You don't necessarily need to eat before the run if you fueled yourself properly the 24-48 hours before.

Are you getting nauseous during your runs? Are you eating after you run? Try getting 70-90 grams of carbs into you as soon as you get home. A good mix is a drink of low-fat/non-fat yogurt and juice. It's like a smoothie w/out ice and a banana. Within an hour after your workout, eat a decent meal with some lean protein (eggs are a good source). About 2 hours after your initial carb intake, get another 70-90 grams in you. Try eating small bits throughout the day. Hopefully, this will help the nausea issue.

I would be careful with the myoplex shakes after a run. That's quite a bit of protein to be taking in, and protein is more difficult for your body to deal with than simple carbs. Were you eating / drinking something with a high protein content prior to the myoplex shakes? What is your post long run routine if you have one? Any other variables you know of?

Once I slowed down my long run pace, I stopped feeling sick after my runs.

Pluggin - It's more important that after a run you begin replacing the carbs you expended than the protein. Yes, you want to get some protein in you to help the muscles replenish themselves, but the carbs are your "go juice," so to speak. Your main meal the day before a long run should be higher on the carb side than the protein side. It's the prior 24-48 hours of eating that gives your body the fuel it's going to use on the run, not what you eat an hour before you run.

I have a great article about this, but unfortunately, it's on my other computer. I will try and remember to pull it up and get it to you.
