Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of October 7th
Carol - after I did the 10K lifting my leg/ knee was really painful - that improved after about a week but putting weight on my leg still hurts where the leg / hip meet - at the front mainly - what has not improved is that hopping or putting suden weight on my leg - like running - hurts .. quite a lot ....and it`s now over 2 weeks since I last ran - the pain does not go away of I warm up - it`s there all the time - and gets worse as the day goes on

I had a similar problem where I would stiffen up after running - but once I had walked a little the pain would go away and I could not feel any pain while running - ice , advil after running and 3 weeks off running once I had ran the race I was training for - I biked swam and x-trained - cleared up the problem

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of October 7th
Good Morning!!

I ran 2 on the DM at the Y last night and did upper body weights. This morning I was out the door at 5:15am for a 5 mile run. It was 49 degrees! Fabulous running weather!

Spicegeek: I'm so sorry to hear about your injury. Keep us posted.

Have a great day!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of October 7th
wbertha--they say it takes 13 days to recover from a 1/2 if your under 40 and 21 days to recover if your over 40. I'm going to follow the same plan I did last time. That has me taking off until Sat. then just running 3 miles. It gradually adds milage back in till your back to where you started in about 3 to 4 weeks. I'm gonna take it slow, I don't have anything major planned for awhile. I'm gonna just coast thru till Jan. then I'm gonna pick up my milage again and get ready the the indy 500 1/2 on May 3rd.
I'd like to still stay at about 20 miles per week till Jan.

Marilyn--good for you, I'm sure you'll do fine on the Austin half, when is it?

smiddleton-I agree, I'm so glad I wasn't doing the chicago. I bet them runners were so disappointed after training so hard.

alex--congrats on passing your tests. hope your run went ok

chuck--man I wish I was up to that milage on the bike. I'm still trying to get my butt used to the seat LOL.

Jeep725--good luck on your runs this week, we have a cold front coming in also. I can't wait. I am so tired of the heat.

ctmama--isn't it great when the run feels sooo good, I'll go check out the gear board.

dan--I say hats off to any of you all that can do your runs on the treadmill, I just can't bring myself to do it. I run outside as much as I can. Take care of those shins. are you doing your toe taps. they work miracles.

meaghan--looks like you had a good 5 mile run. Here's another story about my race I forgot to mention, well ok I was going to keep it to myself but what the hey. I put make-up on that morning because I wanted to look good for the finish photo. Well it was soooo hot and when I stopped at the finish line. I just started sweating something awful. I didn't know it but my mascara ran all the way down my face on both sides. So here I was waiting on my friend to finish and talking to everyone standing around. When my friend finished an hour later, the first thing she said was. Oh my god, you have black stuff all over your face. You should have seen it. I bet all those people were laughing their butts off. Oh well the moral of this story is, don't wear mascara in the heat. I hope it wasn't running for the finish photo. Its not going to look very good anyway, I don't even think I smiled when I crossed the finish line. I was just so glad I was finished.

spicegeek--i'm so sorry to hear about your hip, I'll keep my fingers crossed that its not a stress fracture. Please let us know as soon as you go to the doc.

jules--hope you get your run in.

Joe--its wierd when the little runs feel hard isn't it. I dread my first run that I do, I'll probably end up walking part of it. My quads are so sore.

Jen--oh what I'd do for 49 degree weather. I'm so jealous.

Hope everyone else is doing ok.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of October 7th
I ran my HM on Sunday here in Cleveland and I consider myself lucky. It was a full and half... the same day and time as Chicago in the same conditions. The only difference was we were running the towpath (a path that the mules used to tow the canal boats on the Erie canal) so it wasn't hot pavement and there were trees instead of bulidings. Even so, it was a brutally hot 13.1 miles, especially the last hour.

When I got to the start line at 6:45 (it was still dark) it was already balmy. I knew that was a bad thing. As the sun started rising, so did the temps but not by a lot yet. The race went off at 8AM. By about 9:30 the sun was cresting over the trees and blazing down on us.

I have been nursing an injured leg but it held up well. I took some Gu at mile 10 (I never use the stuff as I find it quite repulsive) but I was trying ANYTHING because of the heat. I had a solid PR going up til about mile 9 but I realized it may become a "just finish" race soon. BTW... that Gu saved my life!!! I thought it was all hype but I actully felt life come back into my body and I could actually feel myself running faster!!!! It got me through those last 3 miles!!!

I wound up finishing in 2:19:27, only 3 minutes slower than my PR 4 weeks ago. I was VERY pround and quite frankly shocked!!! I was sooooo happy to be done. I waited for my friends. One finished about 45 seconds after I did. We waited for our other friend. She was injured as well and wound up walking most of it. She was the LAST halfer in at 3:30.

The marathoners were passing the finish line (it was an odd course) at their 15 mile mark and they all looked pretty whipped. Heck, they still had 11.2 to go!!! I sure didn't envy them. I watched for a friend of mine who was doing the full but missed him. He called me later and told me about how he caught a guy as he was collapsing!!!! Luckily they were by an unmanned water stop and he stayed and poured water on the guy til someone got help. He was worried that he might go into convulsions. He had about 3.2 miles to go (that was were I had gotten my Gu). He said people were dropping like flies at that point.

We were ALL very fortunate!!!!!!!!

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of October 7th
Hi Everyone...

I'm still around, still running, but it's been taking a while to get settled into the new house and my pc still isn't set up and work's been busy as of late.

Thought I'd check in though as I know a lot of you have had your halfs and there are a few coming up on the weekend (mine included .

Congrats Sheila and Imogene on your times - those are both incredible times - you should both feel extremely proud of yourselves!! Wow!

My training has been scattered the past few weeks but I've been able to increase my mileage each week - yesterday I did my longest run to date 17.8km (11miles). It took 2 hours and 18 minutes but it was also really hot and humid (with the humidex it felt like 29C (85F) and the sun was relentless. 20 minutes in I was ready to pull the plug. I don't know how I made it through, there were times when I had to slow down to a bare crawl cause I thought I was going to throw up. I was absolutely miserable, but the entire time I kept thinking that next weekend's race conditions can't be any worse.

I'm not so concerned about the distance any more but I am worried about my sneakers - the last two long runs are taking their toll on my sneakers. I hope they make it through the half!

I did want to ask you guys about runs this week - and what you suggest. How many times did you run/are going to run during the week leading up to the race, and what distance?

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of October 7th
Sheila and Imogene, congratulations! Way to get it done in the heat and humidity, and I am glad you made it safely.

Marilyn welcome, a number of us have now done the half or are very close, any questions you may have someone here can answer.

Tawny, sounds like you are Canadian as you think in metric, I am too.
Possibly you are preparing to run your half at the Toronto Marathon, like me. I am tapering this week, cut down my long run on Sunday to 12.3kms, short bike ride Monday, rest day today, 4-5kms slowly tomorrow.
Simon.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of October 7th
Hi everyone! I hope you don't mind if I join you. I have decided that I would like to run a half marathon. I am a mom of 5 and just had my last baby in January. I ran cross country in high school and enjoyed it, but haven't run a whole lot since then. I started running a little bit this summer and I am LOVING it!! Right now I am running 7.5 mpw with a goal of running a half marathon in the beginning of June. So I have plenty of time to get in shape and train for it. After I do the half marathon, I would like to do a marathon.

I hope it's OK if I start posting with you. I think posting on a weekly thread will help keep me motivated.

gale 813-- congrats on your race. Did you say you ran another 1/2 4 weeks ago. Oh my, I don't think I could run another so soon. It was very hot wasn't it. Good job.

Re: 1/2 Marathon Trainers, Week of October 7th
Thanks for the welcome, everyone! It's nice to know that I have experienced people to ask questions of. Here in Houston, the running season is just getting underway and the big marathons and half marathons are stil a few months away. I've got 16 weeks to get ready for the one I'm doing - the 3M Austin Half on January 27. Today I did an easy 30-minute run on the indoor track at the Y. I would never have thought that I would be saying that 30 minutes of running was easy. Ha, ha!

So, here's a couple of questions. Has anyone used Jeff Galloway's training programs? The overview for his beginner HM program talks about a run/walk ratio. Is this used for all of your runs or just for the long ones? Today I ran for the full 30 minutes, but wondered if I should go ahead and incorporate the run/walk philosophy. Also, all of JG's programs call for a day of rest the day before your long run. The way the program is laid out, this assumes that Saturday will be your day of rest and on Sunday you'll do your long run. This schedule doesn't work for me as I have church activities most of the day on Sunday, so that's usually my day to rest from exercise. I can't really do a long run on Mondays with my work schedule. So is it okay to have a light workout on Friday, do the long run on Saturday and then rest on Sunday?

Thanks!

Marilyn

Hello everyone!

Just popping in to say hi to all the newcomers! This IS a great group...even if you aren't running a half this year...

Hey, I just emailed the running store I bought my Mizuno's from this summer and asked about the knee issues (see my post in the Gear section) and they were great...willing to do an exchange and a test of some new Asics to see if it is the shoes...wow, isn't that great??? Maine Running Company...definitely a great place if you ever get up to Portland!

goingdownsouth--LOL toe taps are just that. Tap your feet, I do it all day long while i'm at work, or driving down the road or anytime I think about it. Google toe taps for shin splints, you'll come up with all kinds of articles. Hopes this helps.
