OWC - using spark people says from 1600-1900 Cal I should be getting 60-165 g protein - I consistently end up in the 40's. I can make 60 if i try really hard but can't seem to do it consistently - even with tuna I just made it to 82 I have protein powder on the way to me so i'm going to try having a shake every day with that or using it to make chocolate milk... I don't really want to go back to eating meat, but I would rather be able to keep increasing mileage than be a veg. And when I tried to really be careful and vary my diet to make sure i'm getting everything i need I found it was more time consuming then I wanted it too be. So i'm not sure that it is the way to go for me completely, but I do think that I will probably eat very very limited meat (only when I crave it) instead of forcing it with every meal. And still eat with lots of beans and such.

Mr. I - went cold turkey after assessing that the only meat I ate was hotdogs, bologna, and scrapple and that I wasn't eating healthy enough to survive when my metabolism slows down. So I gave veg a try and hadn't had a craving till yesterday when I HAD to have tuna. I probably won't start eating other meat again untill it smells good. The biggest issue i had with meat was that I didn't like the way it tasted or smelled - I just don't really like it. I think my downfall is that I'm not much of a cooker. So while i do cook dinner every night I don't want it taking over 1/2 an hour to prepare. So it limits the variation in the diet.

Bugs that is too funny. My parents used to say we'd get "school bus disease" and would miraculously improve after the bus went by! (how did they figure that out??)

ShanGen, if you don't like meat there's no reason to eat it. You can get plenty of protein from simple combinations, my favorite is black beans with brown rice and plain yogurt (DH is making a face, I'm sure). Do you eat dairy? Eggs? Sounds like some fish is ok? You can do just fine, millions of people do so and don't do much fancy cooking. I could be a lacto/ovo vegetarian easily. I like meat, but could live without. My menfolk, however, that's another story. I couldn't do vegan... I like cheese, yogurt and eggs too much. Do you eat soy? Tofu is good once you're used to it, but some women don't like soy for the estrogen-like properties it has...

Peach, MarathonPrincess doesn't post here anymore... at least hasn't in ages. I think I heard she moved over to the Kickrunner site. And btw, you will finish, and I'm sure you'll do well. Just relax and enjoy the whole day.

James, my kids are really busy with school. DS1 finished up cross country and is looking forward to soccer in the spring; he should make the varsity team easily enough. DS2 is deep into his basketball season and doing well. Both boys doing well in school but DS1 is concerned with his B's... get this, he's the only sophomore taking Astrobiology and he's concerned with a B...and he'd have an A if he'd turn in all his work!!! DS2 is pulling A's, but taking all grade level classes. So they're doing well... first quarter ends next Friday.

UGH! Grey, dreary day out there. I feel like taking a nap.

my run today (during which I conquered my neighborhood scary big hill for the first time) pushed me over 100 miles for the year!! Technically in a little under 4 months ( little under = 1 week) because I didn't start running till mid-June!!

evanflein - I do eat dairy. I don't eat plain eggs - don't really like them. But I use to eat egg whit omelets in college and liked them so maybe I will try incorporating that. I do like tofu. Haven't been using much soy product. Like your menfolk my men folk eats veggie dinner because he eats what i'm making but eats meat and lunch and would not complain if I incorporated meat back into our dinner diet.

I think I need to learn to not care about fitting into neat categories... I mean I really am an intuitive eater. I only eat what I'm in the mood for and if I can't eat it for whatever reason then I don't eat until the craving changes. SO I see no reason why I can't continue to eat all that good veggie food and just eat some meat when I feel the need to eat some. It's just that I am one of those people who really like to fit in a nice category.

Bugs - the breathing on one side thing is to help you get into a rhythm of breathing. I only breath on one side. By breathing on every side it's easier to get out of sync with your strokes. IMO, it's easier to have a nice pattern. If I normally inhale when my right arm is out of the water I find I lose my rhythm when I try and inhale when my left is out of the water. As you get more comfortable not inhaling every stroke you may find the same thing. Also you should be staying parallel to the water while doing your strokes if you are finding you are turning side to side when you swim it will seem easier to pick your head up out of the water from either side, however, I would bet that if you kept your head in the water and focused on stretching out your stroke instead of moving side to side you would naturally have one side you favored for breathing. All this rambling comes down to a rhythm thing - just trust her... your rhythm will come as you get more comfortable with your stroke. PS I have an illegal breast kick - my left foot flutters at the very end.

James, with your training times I can't imagine you wouldn't break 4 hours. I'd say it's definately in reach.

Peach, try not to stress too much. This is supposed to be fun!

Bugs, funny about your DS. Good for you for seeing right through him!

ShanGen, 165g of protein is a LOT. I seriously doubt you need that much. Check out McMillan's Nutrition Calculator[/URL" target="_blank">. I think most distance runners probably do the high carb ratio. I know I do! Anyway, enter your info and select your ratio. You'll get much more specific input for what you should be eating. I'm sure Spark means well, but giving someone a range of 60-165g isn't really very helpful. Good luck with the protein powder. If you find one you can stomach, let me know. I tried one once and it made me gag. ::shudder:: Another thing that great for protein is Egg Beaters. Have you read some books on vegetarian nutrition? The thing is when you make the change you have to start thinking out of the box and it can be hard to do that without a little help. Once you get the general concepts down, it's easy.

Erika, it's funny that your DS is concerned about a B. So many kids seem to think it's a success to just pass. Good for him for shooting higher. Sounds like you have some great kids!

Gah! Enough with the wind already! Why does cooler weather equal windy too? I still had a nice 8 miler this morning, I just like to complain.

Today I am officially "in my thirties." I turned 31. I swear it seems like yesterday that I was an irresponsible 20-something drinking too much and partying to the wee hours of the morning. These days a half glass of wine is a lot and I'm in bed by 10pm so I can get up to do my LR. Ah, how things change! DH must have finally realized this running thing wasn't a phase. He has never been very supportive but for my B-Day today he gave me a Garmin 305. Awww... Now I just have to figure out how to use it!

Peach-that marine might indeed be cute and hopefully that helps get you to the finish line-but don't be surprised if SHE also snaps a salute to a job well done! We know you are stressing over this-just remember the crowds are going to help you along as well as your fellow runners-work on looking at all the good things you have done with your training and how great it will feel when you cross the finish line. Stay strong.

Erika-glad the boys are doing so well and I must say I'm not surprised-they sound like great boys with good attitudes. How'd the cross country season go? And are you into a school basketball program or is it a city/town team? We are at the end of soccer for the school next week and it appears they may go undefeated. I am also blessed with a straight A student as first quarter marks came out a couple days ago. She really does like school and we don't have to ask her to do homework, I'm just glad I don't have to help her as what she is learning leaves me feeling pretty dumb!

5 miles last night for the first run since sundays race, felt great and really pushed the pace hard and found after some research that it was the quickest I have run that 5 mile loop.
Hopefully that means I can really focus on going all out in Nov. at Seacoast half. We'll see.

Registration for Vermont City Marathon opens in Nov I think so maybe Princess will return to join in again, anyhow, I plan on signing up again-it however may be my last time at that distance.

Good and easy runs to all.

Jim

It could very well be a SHE that puts the medal around my neck but by then it'll be real and I wont care...the marine could be a HE/SHE for all I'd care

Chased, it's your birthday today?? Me too!!! But I left my thirties behind long ago. Just as well I guess. Was a very stressful time in my life, actually. I've got just a couple years left in the 40's... that big 50 is loomin' large! Happy birthday, dear, and I hope you have a really good day.

Jim, our sports seasons are all goofy cuz of our weather here. Soccer is a short spring season for high school. Basketball for middle school is actually almost done! High school is getting going and will go thru winter pretty much. XC was done in September... they had ice on the puddles for their last local meet!

Good to hear you're doing VCM again, I've almost come to equate that race with you...

Peach, I think you need an attitude check, girl You've worked so hard and come so far, you should be celebrating your progress! I remember you posting after your first half marathon and how you didn't think you could ever ever ever run farther than that. Now you do 13 mile runs pretty easy, right? It's all perspective. You'll get through this, and I think you'll do well.

Did a quick 2 mile run at 4% incline on the treadmill, then hit the weight room for about 35 minutes of super sets and ab work. Pleasantly sore this morning. Was going to run in the snow (yep, we've got snow...) tonight, but need to be home cuz DS2 is bringing his GF home after school, and her mom called last night to be sure "a responsible adult" would be there. DH said that meant me. sigh

Peach, it's going to be good, I promise. I do know what you mean about it not being fun anymore. The last 6 weeks or so of marathon training are a struggle for me. The last month or two of training, I fully expect to develop a bad attitude toward running and start glowering at everyone around me. Sounds to me like you're right on schedule! The taper will help--well, it'll help you. My DH says I'm perpetually grumpy, taper or not.

Jim, wow, all these great kids! I hope your DD continues to enjoy school. That's such a blessing. Sounds like you're running really well too. What is your goal for Seacoast?

Is anyone else having a hard time restraining themselves from running through the piles of leaves that are on the streets this time of year? Or do that not do that where you guys are? Here people rake their leaves onto the street into giant piles and then the city comes around with a giant vacuum. The problem is the time between now and when they get to it with the vacuum. It is SOOOO tempting. I just know I'm not going to be able to resist much longer...

Erika, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Sorry you have to play chaperone on your B-Day, but sounds like your DH knows his limitations. How much snow to you have? That actually sounds pretty cozy right about now. Have a wonderful day!

OWC and Erika: Happy Birthday!!! How funny that we have two birthdays on the same day here! I will drink some celebratory wine for you tonight

Peach: Cheer up and stop doubting yourself. You're ready!

Bugs: love that you caught your kid faking. Hilarious. I'm getting pretty good at catching kids who want to leave my class because they're "sick"--funny how they always fall ill when a test is coming up or something is due...

ShanGen: Congrats on the 100 miles! That's a great accomplishment!

Did an easy two miles and lifted weights last night. It felt great to run after three days off. Nothing sore at all..which leads me to believe that I really COULD tackle another marathon this fall...but DH has put his foot down. He really wants me to take a break and since I so rarely listen to him, I'll give in this time. Plus, we compromised and I think I'm going to do a half on Mackinac Island in two weeks. It should be beautiful up there and the majority of the race is trails (which will be new for me).

Planning to do 5 tonight. I"ll probably have to break out the tights since it's getting cold.

Beaumont, trail running is the best! I love it... most of my longer distance runs here are trail based. The trail part of the Bellingham marathon was wonderful, and very well groomed/maintained. Our trails are mostly cross-country ski trails so not very smooth, but I like it like that. Makes you really watch your foot placement!

Chased, we have just a little snow (1 inch or so) in the lower areas, up in the hills where we live it's closer to 2" I'd say. Nice and dry though... sometimes we go through rain/snow/slush before things freeze up but not this year so that's nice.

It's funny, but there's another gal from the Boomers forum who also has her birthday today! We met up in Bellingham and that was the main excuse for the party atmosphere... That was so much fun.

Happy Birthday Chased and Erika
That is too funny your birthdays are on the same day. Next year today will be a Saturday, you guys should run a race together. Celebrate the day as a runner.

Beumont
His teacher called, he was suppose to spend his recess time in the princ. office. Busted. He had a good day today, told him if things start going better I'd arrange a play date. His teacher calls us EVERY day to give us an update. My kid is a real challenge for her. Think her x-mas gift will have to be a whopper.

Marathon Peach
You will do great. There will be hot sweaty men, enjoy the view. You know I almost didn't run my first, almost talked myself out of it. Not that I was scared, just that I didn't get that it was such a big deal. You will love it, get ready to be addicted.

ShanGen
Why don't you do triathlons?

In the pool twice today, k this swimming thing is going to be hard. My worst fear is that I'll keep practicing and not get better. Only one way to find out.

Ran 3 miles. Someone screamed, "nice butt", and I said, "Thanks" in a chipper way. I had black tights with terrible panty lines. What a sight.

Gotta get on the nutrition thing, endless halloween candy, and no time for real meals is killing me.

My stuff is the buzz at work. My boss says this V.P, that V.P all wants a demo. Don't wake me up.

Bugs - I haven't swum seriously since high school. An indoor pool triggered some very severe asthma attacks so now when I swim it is very very cautiously. I love swimming and one day will hope to go back to it, but i'm not sure i could ever do it competitively again. Between my performance anxiety issues and anxiety over having an asthma attack it seems like a recipe for disaster. On and I'm afraid of bicycles - seriously I chipped my heel on one in 4th grade got on a bike once after that and the kid I was with came really close to my bike and made like he was going to touch my handle bars - I freaked out and gave my bike to goodwill. haven't been on one since. The pool will get easier I promise!!!! Nice job on the run - YEAH!!!

HAPPY LATE B_DAY OWC AND ERICA!!!

OWC - i'm going to take your advice and get a book on nutrition not just a cook book. I'm not ready to go back to meat yet so I need to work harder at figuring this out. I think i'm gonna use the powder (mixed it with milk and it was ok - no tummy pain) and try having an egg white omelet after my long runs. And then see what other things I can incorporate which will help. I tried that website and it said I should be getting 77g of protein so I was WAY low. Anyway thank you for your encouragement (You too ERICA)!! I might be back with questions.

SOOO my long run was a wash. I have a 5mile out and back. At 2.5 my tummy started to rumble (darn that chinese food last night) and by 3.2 I decided walking was safer since there was no porter john's in sight. Managed to walk the last 2 miles back to my car and the PJ's. I felt really strong too so it made me mad that I had to walk and cut it short. AND I wore my tights - without putting shorts on over top of them and I felt totally comfortable!! But i do need gloves my hands were freezing!
