Enjoy it...don't stress over it

I just have a quick question. How long and where were you when you really realized you loved running?

Re: Enjoy it...don't stress over it
I'm not sure when I first realized that I loved running and I can't say that I always do. Mostly it's when I'm in the middle of a great run or go farther than I'd intended.

Last weekend I completed my first 10K and realized somewhere around mile 4-5 that I suddenly considered myself a runner! I guess I never had before.

You don't have to complete a 10K to know it but someday when you're not looking for it, it will be there!

A few runs after I learned to slow down! Instead of being miserable and in pain, I realized that the birds were singing, the sun was shining, and that I could DO it!

Mine was about 5 years ago after a little - local 5K race which I got second in my age group (43 years old at that time... I'm a late bloomer) Been hooked ever since, and I love running more than about anything.

After the first injury. When you can't run PR's, age division placement and the like become much less important. I just want to get out the door and be a runner.

when I started thinking of my running shoes and clothing as tools and not fashion accessories and started enjoying the running rather than trying to beat my previous time.

I hate it at the beginning of a run, and love it when I am finished!

Re: Enjoy it...don't stress over it
I'm not sure I'm there yet.

I've been running since April, and I feel so awesome when I've had a great run. When I finished the OHR program, I felt an amazing sense of accomplishment. But I'm still working towards LOVING to run. I enjoy it and it is a mini obsession of mine, but I'm still working my way into loving it. I hope to be there soon, though!

I love Dipmom's comment:

"I hate it at the beginning of a run, and love it when I am finished!"

That is how I still feel.

I can relate to this....(I've told my dad (who's a runnner) that the only time I get that "runner's high" is when my run is over and I'm headed for home! LOL)

The closest moment I've had so far to "feeling like a runner", was when I had an early morning appt. and would have had to miss my scheduled run....so I got up EARLY TO RUN! That was my, "I'm a real runner now" moment. (I know I'll feel it again when I'm lined up for my 1st 5k!)

After I completed my first, non-stop, 5K training run
There was a moment when it occurred to me, "I can do this, I really can do this!"
It was magical, it was June 22nd, 2006 and I have not looked back since

I had been walking for about 2 months. I had added a little running in spirts during my walks of about 2.5 miles. One day I was able to run my 2.5 mi route without stopping. I was hooked from there!!

High school, 20+ years ago. Why I only ran off and on for 16+ years is beyond me...

Re: Enjoy it...don't stress over it
That is a very good question and I really had to think about it. I'm not sure I'm there yet either, and I'm into high mileages now. I think I love the feeling of completing a run and being able to say "I did it." On my way out the door this morning for my 18 miler (marathon prep), my father said "you really look forward to your runs, don't you?" And I honestly said "no, I don't...I look forward to finishing." I'm not sure when I will cross that threshold, or if I have already. I know I feel bad when I don't run, and I feel good when I'm finished. I hope it gets better than that. THen again, I could just be getting tired from all my training...marathon is 3 weeks away...yikes!!
