Hi guys! I have had a busy last few weeks, but have been getting all my runs in! Did that Salem Mass. 5K on Sunday with my DH - his first race! We did great and I had a PR with 10:35 mm! Makes me want to start working seriously on speed work! Of course, my DH could have run much faster but wanted to stay at my pace...it really isn't fair that the male body is so much faster than a womans! Oh well, I can still run farther than he can!
Sorry I don't have times for any shout-outs. Glad to hear everyone is doing well and (I think it was Jeep I read about this) good decision on sitting the half out - there will be some many more and you will be all the more stronger for making this good decision!
Alex

I have a question for the group.I've ran 2 Half's before without taking GU'S. I've seen where some of you use them. Do they make you sick to your stomach and also what are they and what do they do? Well that's more than one question but I was thinking of using them when I get in the double didgits if they help but I'd heard people with sensitive stomachs like mine have upset stomachs after taking them,so I've never really checked into them.

Rest day for me today...well, rest from running at least.

I like the sports beans and usually take some with me on runs of 6 miles or more. But then being as slow as I am, it takes me a long time to get to 6 miles. lol They really seem to help. Are very thirst quenching and I usually use them if going to run 6 or more miles. I like the packages because you can eat as many or few as needed. Used them in my last half marathon at the 6, 10 and 12 mile marks. Next time, might start a little earlier and hope to finish a little stronger. Also, hoping that my running the next 3 months or so helps to build my endurance.

Am currently looking to run a half marathon in February, probably in Florida. Just not sure how training in northern Illinois will work out for me this winter. The treadmill helps but it is just not the same as the road. It's not that I am so opposed to the cold as I am not willing to run on ice or snow. Really, really don't need a broken bone.

Okay I ran 6 miles tonight. First time to run in the cool weather. IT IS COLD AND I DON'T LIKE COLD. But, I ran the best ever. So that is a fantastic thing. HAHA.

Chuck - I feel your pain. I get them as well since the birth of my daughter 8 yrs ago. But noticed that when I started running they are more frequent. Good to know your doc said it is okay to run with them. I wondered. Also, on the gu thing, never tried it. Sorry.

Hope all is well with everyone. About to watch the Bachelor. Looks like some good drama tonight.

Hola!

Joe - did you get that 5 in??

Peg - sorry you missed your bridge run! I have done that AM vs pm thing on more than one occasion... The Relay sounds like fun! What distance will you cover? And what do you mean it's cold? How cold is it???

Simon - sounds like you are enjoying your easy weeks I am no good at hills, where is your April race? Re: the fuel belt, I only carry water in mine, and I only wear it on distances over 5, but it also kinda depends on the weather. I can easily go for an hour w/o drinking anything if the weather is sub 60/not humid. If it is 70s++ I usually drink every 20 min or so even if I don't feel thirsty. But... I also drink at least 64 oz of water a day every day, so I am habitually hydrated LOL

Sheila - sounds like you had a nice run with your friend! Maybe your temp will drop a little now that it has rained.

chuck - sorry to hear about the "h" problem!! To answer your question, there are several things like GU that you can use...gels (Gu, Power Gel), shot blocks (kinda like gummi bears), sport beans....what you could do is pick up a few different varieties and try them out. And it really depends, in my opinion, on how long your are out running rather than your distance, since we all run at different paces. I only use a gel if I am going to be out for more than 1:20, and if so I take it around the 45-50 minute mark. If I'm going to be out for more than 1:30, I take it at the 1 hour mark. But there are also people who don't use them and don't think they are necessary. So...try some out and see what works best for you and your tummy!

Alex - congrats to your DH! And congrats on your PR!

wbertha - I run outside in the winter, but there is a park near my house that they clear off the sidewalk when it has snowed, maybe you could find one too! Check your local parks & rec office

I went to see the doc today, and I couldn't see my doc because he was all booked up. And I was a little bummed because he's a runner, but I didn't want to wait until Thursday either. But anyway it just confirmed what I had self-diagnosed...tendonitis on both sides of my ankle.. peroneal and post-tibial...WTH??? So it is off to physical therapy to develop some strengthening exercises and such for the next 4 WEEKS!! If all goes well I may get a Turkey Trot in still...HOPE HOPE.

Take care all night night!

Good evening gang, just a quick check in--late night and early morning. 5 miles tonight after only doing stairs at work this weekend.

Chuck- this is going to sound funny-- I eat orange slices, the candy. I compared calories on a lot of candies and they seem to have the most with no fat. They are much cheaper than the gu's or blocks.

Good running,
Go Rockies!!!!!!!!!!!!!

dying to run!!!! I finally feel totally recovered from my 1/2. Unfortunatly, the sky is an ugly shade of orange and it is raining ashes everywhere. It is going to kill me, but I am going to go to the gym tomorrow and run on the t.m.

yamahamamma- glad you're feeling back up to speed. Are you in CA with that ash and orange sky? Take Care!

i see that there is some world series rivalries going on here. i live in boston, so i expect the whole city to be a little nutty for a while. i might even go watch a game in a pub or something. (i'm really not much of a sports fan, being raised by your mom does that kind of thing to you).

got 5 miles in this morning. wore my heart rate monitor for the first time in about a year. I think I'm going to wear it and track my average HR, and see if I can get it to go down at the same speed by just logging a ton of slowish miles. we'll see. i also ran with my headlamp on my head but with the light pointing backward, figuring i could use streetlights to see and am much more worried about not being **SEEN**. Anyone have favorite dark running tips?

Have good runs all!

Peg - sorry you didn't make the bridge, but good luck with the race on Sunday. I had wanted to run in that, but I'll be out of town.

Chuck - sorry to hear about your "H" problem. My half is in January. Austin has the 3M half on Jan. 27 and then the AT&T marathon and half just 3 weeks later on Feb. 17. I've never tried GU or anything like that, so I'll be interested to see the responses.

wbertha - what are sports beans? Are they like jelly beans? If you want to avoid the ice and snow, run on down here to Houston.

jeep - sorry about the ankle and that you have to be off of it for 4 weeks, but at least it's only 4 weeks. I'll be pulling for you to make that Turkey Trot.

Stan - I'm with you. Go Rockies!!! I have to root for the Rockies because I just love Willy T and I've been sad ever since the day Houston foolishly traded him away for a worthless pitcher.

yamahamama - sorry to hear that you'll have to hit the t.m. but stay safe!

imogene - I run at 5 in the morning, so it's definitely dark. I wear a reflective vest and also wear a red blinky light. I also run against traffic, so that I can see what's coming my way. At that hour of the morning, there's not usually a lot of traffic in my neighborhood, but I do see a few cars on the main roads.

3 miles for me today. I LOVE these cooler temps! I'm considering running in the Rice Owls Twilight 5K on Thursday, Nov. 1. I'll be spending the day that day at the Quilt Show.
