Re: 40s On the Run - Winter Is Our Friend, Winter Is Our Friend
Hi Forty's

R2- keep up the good work and you'll have play time soon enough. We'll forget all about that 50's remark.

Carol- congrats on your DH's race. With your Mom and hubster running, you've got the whole family out there!

Jewels- hang in there,we all have our down times.I was up to Mass,NH and Maine a couple of weeks ago too and the foliage was spectacular.

Tamara39 11/12- wish I could adopt the dog. I think that you get the award for Farthest 40, for the most miles run lately. Nice Going! Very Impressive ! I dream about doing a marathon, but my body will tell me if it's possible.

Bty- Great Race! and Good Luck on your next one.You get the award for Fastest 40
Joe

***mittened fingers & toes crossed that our plains folks can get harvest accomplished before we get around to keeping snow on the ground for the season***

Joe: it's about 10,000' elev there....14er's visible! about the same as Leadville

Carol40,
Nice article, thanks for sharing.
Mostly I snowshoe on the local trails...the same ones I run on, but once the season gets started, I love Keystone and Frisco. Both locations have great snowshoeing and X-country skiing areas.

nj joe,
Snow is great...when you have all the right 'toys!'

Since the trails are still snow covered and mushy...thanks to all those people out there snowshoeing on it (!!!) I had to resort to a road run this morning. Ten miles at the Air Force Academy...on the "Killer hill."

Have a terrific Tuesday everyone

Re: 40s On the Run - Winter Is Our Friend, Winter Is Our Friend
OMG yaw will not believe what happened to me yesterday. Talk about drama. So i'm doing my LAST long run, 18 miles. Feeling great and strong at mile 9, turn around to go back. At mile 10, I start feeling heart flutters. Never felt that before. It didn't hurt, so I kept going. At mile 13 I lost it. Got very ill, started throwing up and thought I would pass out and trouble breathing. A firefighter just "happened" to be across the street and saw me. Came over and put me on oxygen immediately, went to the ER and was there all day doing all kinds of tests and basically left not knowing WHAT in the H happened. The cardiologist happened to be a marathoner, so that helped. Basically, all they found out was that my heart was excreting this hormone that is usually excreted when someone has a heart attack...petronin or something like that. However, I did not have a heart attack, and all the tests on my heart came back really good and strong. Basically they have no idea why my heart did that. SO, the doc says I can still run the marathon, but if I get any flutters at ALL I am to stop immediately and then they will have to let me wear a monitor for a few days. Anyway, scared my DH to death when he got a call from the fire dept...scared me too. The doc said I should just pretend I ran the entire 18 and start tapering this week as I normally would. Now I'm a little gun shy!

I feel good today....anyone else ever have anything like this??

Re: 40s On the Run - Winter Is Our Friend, Winter Is Our Friend
Tamara,
Lucky the firefighter was there...glad you got tests and done and that all is well...be careful out there!

I've had heart flutters in recent months too...got them checked out (stress test, blood tests, the whole kit and kaboodle,) everything checked out fine...doc said it was one of the (many!) symptoms of menopause and nothing to worry about.

Leslie,
I've been watching some of the coverage from L.A. area. The scope of the fires is something else! Last I heard, they were covering an area the size of New York city?!?!? That's crazy.
I hope the winds of fortune change for those people.

Re: 40s On the Run - Winter Is Our Friend, Winter Is Our Friend
Leslie...I keep forgetting to tell you guys, the marathon is November 10. I have to say...the firefighter was definitely cute, and I know I stunk something awful. The paramedics were cute too, but they were like 20. However, I do have to say, they were all impressed that I was at mile 13. They said they would be throwing up and passing out if they had just run 13 miles too. They actually came back to the hospital later that day to check on me and ask if I was still going to run the marathon. I told them I didn't come this far to quit now!!

Sapphire...menopause??!! Really??!!! That thought never would have occurred to me...maybe I'm having some sort of early menopause thing! Oh lordy.....

THanks so much for the encouragement...you guys rock!

Re: 40s On the Run - Winter Is Our Friend, Winter Is Our Friend
Yikes!!! Good for you for getting right back on your horse, Tamara. Anybody would be a little gunshy after that, or I'd wonder what was wrong with them.

No, the only time I've ever felt any kind of fluttering was when I was doing nothing but 5 milers every day for a while one winter; my resting hr got really low - like around 30-something - and it felt like it had stopped. So I took my pulse and my heart was going like thum......puh.......thum,,,,,puh.......thum.............thum. That got my attention, when I missed that one "puh". But I was sitting at my desk and there was no drama. Doc wasn't concerned.

My wife and daughter and I went to watch #2 son in his league champioship cross country meet today. His team mates and he took 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 9, for a total of just 23 points. 2nd place was much, much higher. My guy took 5th out of somewhere around 75 runners. One more meet and he's done. They went undefeated in league meets, won their league championship meet, and took 1st, 2nd and 3rd in their three invitationals to date. WooHoo!!

Re: 40s On the Run - Winter Is Our Friend, Winter Is Our Friend
Tamara -- I'm so glad you came throught that OK! Definitely scary. I don't want to be the downer of the group, and I know you'll make the decision that is right for YOU. But I have a little different perspective. To me running is a means of taking care of my body/mind and staying fit; plus it is fun! Races and training for them are just ways to stay motivated. So when/if I find that what I'm doing is actually detrimental to my health and other aspects of life, I will take a break, or find something else that works better. Not saying running caused your issue, but I just wanted to encourage you to consider that you can meet the goal of staying fit (if that is your primary goal) whether you start and/or complete this particular race or not. There are other races, but only one Tamara! Since I'm not going to be able to do the first 1/2 that I had planned without risking my ability to walk dogs and do other things that are more critical than running, I've really had a chance to think about all that and put running in perspective as it relates to the rest of life. This group is so great and we will all be behind you no matter what! Sincerely....oddball Carol

Geez Tamara , that must have been very scary. You are really lucky someone was around. It helps that your Dr is a runner but Carol has a good point. How much time would it take to get a second opinion? I think your DH would like that!

Praying for all the people and firefighters in California who are dealing with the disaster out there.

Joe

Tamara: ....did you get a 2nd opinion from you own PCP?? But ~ if that Heart Doc is a marathoner, I might be inclined to heed his advice!....you didn't say anything about temps, etc...??......Also, just FYI, Peri-menopause, which is your body starting the change-up getting ready for the process of menopause, can start as early as mid 30's....(dang it!!) depending on genetics, etc.....hormones & other 'systems' start acting wonky - randomly..... actually, I'm having less issues w/it since I started running......apparently for me, this helps me stabalize these irratic hormonal fluctuations......this is one of those 'unique body experiences' Lotsa info avail online...

Uh Oh. I think my wife needs to read this.

I got out and ran four miles on my lunch break today. First three miles were at about my recovery jog pace. Then I alternated 100m strides with 100m jogs for 1/2 mile; then finished with 1/2 mile jog - finished in 38:30 or so.

It was 47F at noon. No sun, and no wind. Shorts and t-shirt weather normally, but it's been so warm this fall that I haven't properly acclimated to the cooler temps, and decided to wear a pair of wind pants over my shorts, but no long sleeve shirt - just a short sleeve tech shirt. By the end of my run I was a little warmer than I'd have liked - the long pants were overkill, even for an easy/recovery run.

Have a great day everyone.

Re: 40s On the Run - Winter Is Our Friend, Winter Is Our Friend
Tamara - YIKES!

Troponin is what they look for in your blood. It's muscle protein that is involved in the control of muscle contraction, and during a heart attack, since muscle (and hence protein) breakdown can occur, some of the troponin shows up in the blood. However, heavy exercise is known to sometimes cause troponin levels to rise in the blood...one theory of muscle strengthening does include muscle damage in the model.

So - that's me wearing my biologist's hat. The rest of me says have a longer chat with your regular doc and be careful!
