***Mile Loggers*** Week of October 29th

Happy Monday!
This group of mile loggers started the C25K program somewhere in the past few months, and we are staggered anywhere throughout the program. Some are in the last two weeks, and some are brandy ol new. :-)
Please feel free to jump in, be kept accountable and add to the motivational atmosphere. If you don't know how to start, begin by just posting about your run for that day!

In news for me - still not able to run with my foot - but GO SOX! :-)

Katie--Congrats on your Sox! Sorry to hear you still can't run, but you will get there! Do not despair!

DipMom--read about your race on the old thread. CONGRATS!! That is an awesome time! It sounded like it was a lot of fun. I imagine you'll be signing up for more! My marathoning DD was home over the weekend, and asked when I was going to sign up for one. I told her maybe in the spring--but I have a LONG way to go yet to build up to that.

lml, sorry to hear you are sidelined for a while longer, too! If you're okay on the elliptical, though, I would think you won't lose anything.

I am having some pain in the arch of my left foot--burning-type pain along the tendon. Hopefully just tendinitis, and not plantar fasciitis?? I don't have any pain in the heel. I walked yesterday about 2 miles further than I normally do on my "off" days, and with my shoe laced snugly, it really didn't bother me. I didn't try to run today, though... too tired to get up early this a.m. after taking DD back to O'Hare last night, and then not sleeping well. Does anyone know if it's okay to continue while this is going on? I think it's a result of working for 3 days on the cement floor of my basement wearing crocs... They're cushy but apparently not real good support?

Wishing everyone a good week!

DipMom -- thanks for the motivation, I went ahead and tried W2D1 instead of repeating week 1 and it really wasn't bad at all! It was 32 degrees outside at 5:30 am which was pretty discouraging, but I had my german shorthair pointer puppy trotting along with me (more like pulling me like a sled) so it was pretty fun. The sox won last night and the patriots dominated, so today is just an awesome day all around! Anyway thanks again.

Thanks macd. Sorry I don't have any advice on tendinitis. My experience ends at toenails.

I forgot to mention that when I finished my race, my husband and kids were all excited and talking at once. At first I thought it was because of me...until I realized they were talking about an 85-year-old woman who had crossed the finish line. As my daughter put it "she was way faster than you Mom." I think her time was 27 minutes but I will confirm that once they post the results. Can you imagine?

Sorry about all the injuries out there. Just get better and remember what I told Katie...don't get yourself in a funk and start eating. Your abs and upper bodies are fine so maybe just refocusing for a few days would be good.

DipMom - Congratulations on your race! Your 32:30 is a great time for a first race - especially since you just started running. And it sounded like a lot of fun with all the costumes.

Katie - Congratulations on the Sox win. You'll be back running soon - just don't push it too soon.

macd - don't have any wisdom on the foot problem. Maybe someone else has dealt with this. You may also want to try the medical forum.

eyedocguy - I'm glad you pushed on to w2. We've been there - we understand. But sometimes it is more of a mental thing and you just need to tell yourself you can do it.

This is my day off from running. I'll try and get back out tomorrow morning. Have a great week, everyone.

Katie, that is pretty funny about the furniture place. I guess they didn't think the Sox had much of a chance. I'm in Colts territory, and all we're hearing about is "Super Bowl 41-1/2." How's the toe coming?

DipMom, have you come down off your high yet? Let that 85-year-old be an inspiration (you'll beat her next year!).

eyedocguy, glad to hear you decided to try to move on. I've found it doesn't help to tell yourself that you can't do something before you've even tried

I made my first full move to outdoor running by going to the track this morning--I know it counts as outdoors because it was only 37 degrees, and figured it would be safer than streets and sidewalks in terms of not reinjuring my almost-healed ankle. I did find myself running about a minute per mile faster than I had been going on the treadmill, so had to take some walk breaks--but any slower and I might as well have just walked. It felt good, so I'll probably try to keep that up as long as the weather cooperates.

Hey..did we lose people? Last week I couldn't even keep up with all the posts.

Katie - It was hard. As usual the first 2 miles sucked. I don't know why it takes me so long to find my groove. Whenever I saw a younger, thinner person walking I would start to think "I could just walk for a minute or two." I decided to change my thinking and focus on older, heavier people who were running. I kept telling myself, "If they can do it, I can do it."

doc - I remember W2 so well. It went something like this: "Only 3 more runs...only 2 more runs...finally, last run!" Do you know about the podcasts? A guy named Robert Ullrey recorded each week so you just run/walk when he tells you. It is so much easier because you don't have to keep track of the time. It is like having a personal trainer. You can also find them on iTunes and they are free. I am trying to post a link...hope it works.

JB - Thank you. I am glad you are still here.

Hey, has anyone hit the Halloween candy yet? The kids keep wanting to open the bags and I won't let them. As long as they are sealed I'll be O.K. Tomorrow will be another story I am sure.

DipMom - I have a great trick for Halloween candy. My husband used to go out and buy Reeses peanut butter cups (a big weakness for me) and then I would eat way too many and sometimes have to make another trip to the store. A couple of years ago I started buying the Almond Joy or Mounds bars. Both have coconut, so I won't touch either one!

Katie - That furniture deal is amazing. You didn't get in on it?

macd - I keep reading lots on running and everything I read says don't worry about speed for at least 6 months. In the meantime, just keep thinking that slow is better than on the couch.

I should have been out running this morning, but woke up with extreme pain (i.e., felt like someone was trying to pry my knee cap off). I've been hydrating a lot and stretching and it seems to be better, so I may try and get out around noon today. I think the massive amounts of walking may have caught up to me. I estimated that we walked a minimum of 8 miles every day we were in Boston.

JB - I am afraid that wouldn't work for me since I am an "equal opportunity eater." Well, maybe I could hold myself back if I bought Candy Corn!

Hi Everyone, I missed you guys. Dipmom you did awesome on your first 5k. Really good time. We are all so proud of you.
I was worrying about the Halloween candy myself, I think I'm going to get those individual cheese and cracker things to give out kids love them but I hate cheese so that may work.

I am looking into new 5's in my area. As I mentioned last week My daughter had the baby and I stayed with her all week so I missed my first 5k. : (

Katie, You will be back running in no time hang in there and feel better. I'm happy for you your SOX won, and I did see something on the news regarding the furniture, that was awesome for those people.

macd, Sorry about your foot, maybe you should try soaking it in Epsom salt and warm water?

Well I have not run for over a week, I am going running tonight after work I miss it very much. I was just so tired getting up and helping with the new baby every few hours wiped me out I had no energy to run and plus it rained most of last week. But I promise myself to run tonight.
Hope you all have a great day.
Maria

I'm already done with the Halloween candy. Our (stupid) town always has trick-or-treat on Saturday night. I bought 3 small bags, and did not open them until time to turn the porch light on. Then I indulged somewhat, but with my DD and her BF in for the weekend, and the trick-or-treaters, it went pretty fast. By the time we got back from taking the kids to the airport Sun. night, there were only 2 butterfingers and 1 reese cup left (and some 3 musketeers, but DH will eat those)--so I finished them and the temptation is gone. And when I weighed Mon. morning, I was down another lb. Go figure.

jb, I'm really not worried about speed--I just think I should "run" slightly faster than I can walk. But, I want to sustain it for a longer distance, so it's a trade-off, I guess. It sounds like you got a LOT of walking in on your trip--and probably mainly on sidewalks? I hope your pain goes away quickly--be careful running until it does!

Maria, welcome back! That's great that you were able to help your daughter out with the new baby. That would definitely be my priority over a 5k --I'm sure you'll find another one soon. Thanks for the foot suggestion. It does seem to be improving.

DipMom, I like how you changed your mindset during your race. So much of it (for me at least) is mental. I'll have to remember that for my first 5k (if I EVER work up to that!).

Hey everyone! Well it's a new week, and I'm only off my runs for another 9 days... ratzenfratzen! I'm really missing it, too. I pine after runners I drive past, thinking of all the miles I could be logging. But to be honest, the hip is worse rather than better today, I haven't even been on the elliptical, and I'm thinking I just need to be patient.

I've just bought my halloween candy today so that I'd stay away from it! My (stupid) town starts trick-or-treat at 3:30 in the afternoon tomorrow - who is HOME at 3:30 in the afternoon? Kids are just going to have to skip me until I can get home from work.

Sorry you missed your race, Maria! You'll find another one, but you'll never have those first few days with that beautiful grandbaby, though!

Maria - welcome back. There will be lots of 5Ks - but only one chance to spend in the first few days of a baby's life. You did the right thing! Let us know how your run tonight goes.

lml - listen to your body. Hopefully the hip will feel better soon.

macd - I think you and I are similar - I walked some today and my 5k time was only 3 minutes longer than when I run. But at least we are moving.

I took it easy today. After the intense knee pain this morning, I was a little wary. It seems to stiffen when I sit too long and the stairs hurt a lot, but I was able to do a run/walk today to get my 5K in. I think I'll sit in the whirlpool for awhile tonight to see if that helps. I still think we just overdid the walking this weekend while trying to keep up with a college senior!

jb, everything stiffens when I sit too long! And it really doesn't take that long, either.... I wish I had started this 20 or 30 years ago! Actually, I guess I did make some attempts 30 or so years ago, but I didn't know anything (and there was no internet to go to), and shin splints and side stitches drove me away in short order. Anyway, I hope the whirlpool helped!

lml, sorry to hear your hip isn't feeling better. Have you seen a dr? Do take care of it--better some time off than to have to quit altogether, right?

Happy Halloween, everyone!
