Week 5, anyone?

I graduated from C25K back in June and ran 2-3 miles about 5-6 days a week. Then I ended up missing 3 1/2 weeks of running due to cataract surgery and surgeon's orders. Whoa! My fitness level went downhill faster than I could ever guess. It's not anywhere close to 2-3 miles in 30 minutes or so (I'm so slow still); in fact, I'm now beginning W5 all over again and working up to another graduation.

Friday (Day 3 for me) has a 20 minute run which is scaring me all over again. It might take me a few tries.

I'm no spring chicken. I'll be 60 in two months (usually post on the Boomer and Beyond board), am losing weight with WW, and have some other health issues which running helps with.

Roberta--

That's inspiring to hear you back running. I'm on week 5 now (I'm 2 weeks behind schedule as I repeated some days and had to take a week off).

Day 3 should happen late this week for me as well. I'm right with you.

Hi,
I am starting week 4. Just finished day 1 this morning. I never thought I could run the 5 minutes straight! But, I did. It will be nice to see how you do...the week before me!
I am 43 and decided to try to this running thing for the first time. My husband has run for about 30 years and my 12 yo just started. I hope to surprise them with a 5K of my own in Dec.

Roberta, am I correct in thinking you'd done C25K the first time on a treadmill, and were redoing it outside? I finished it about 10 days ago, having started in mid-July and doing the treadmill on account of the heat & humidity this summer. I had intended to transition outside when it got cooler; however, I fell and twisted my foot on my first outdoor run, so scrapped that plan. I would have liked to continue with OHR outside now, but after running a little outdoors yesterday, I don't think I'm ready for that. I'm not sure what would be the best plan... redo C25K, or start somewhere in the middle? Anyway, I may be at about the same level you are. I was only doing a little over 2 miles on the TM at the end of C25K, though.

I'm not far behind you age-wise (55), and have a lot of weight to lose; down a little since mid-August, though. No other known health issues, except some pain in the tendon in my left foot at the moment.

Sorry for the long post... Anyway, I'd be interested in hearing more about your experience in transitioning to the outdoors, and any advice you might have for my situation. Thanks, and good luck with your runs!

Hi,
I just did day 1 of week 5 of C25K this morning. The first 5mins were tough, but after that it was easier than I anticipated. I am new to this running stuff, never ran in my life. I am 51, and ex smoker(5yrs ago), a WW lifetimer and running my first 5K on 12/4. I am worried about the 20 min. run on day 3 this week. Is it okay to walk for 90sec if I feel I have too. I don't want to fail.
Keep up the good work. Its nice to know that someone out there is in the same boat as me. Your my inspiration. Let me know how you make out on day 3.

Thanks for the tip on lengthening the stride--mine is pretty hobbled looking at this point! I'll give that a try. I went to the hs track this morning--a start at running outdoors, without the dangers of reinjuring the ankle on uneven pavement and sidewalks. It was a brisk 37 degrees, so the summer heat is definitely gone. I ran the first half mile at a pace that was about a minute/mile faster than I had been going on the treadmill, but got tired sooner and walked some stretches, which I'm okay with. It does sound like we're about the same pace. I'm way behind you on weight loss, though--less lost and a lot more to go! Congratulations on your progress, and keep it up!!! It's very inspiring!

Roberta,

It's inspiring to hear about your progress and it made me feel better to hear others had to repeat weeks.

I just got W5D2 done, although I was very tight. Hopefully the tightness is highly correlated with the very stressful meeting I came out of.

I may have to re-repeat this week--my legs were very tense and I don't know how I'm making the 20 minutes.

I have been struggling with about 10 pounds and thought this running would be the solution. From what I am hearing, it isn't really. I am a WW Lifetime member. I guess I need to go back to eating better.
This morning I head out for W4D2. I am going to think about my stride. Thanks for that tip. I do sometimes feel like I am just working really hard to make my legs move! Too much energy wasted.

Hi Week 5 People,

Cheffy here, and I would like to join your thread. I am supposed to start Week6 today, but heres the deal. My Stubborn DH keeps getting hurt, and refuses to run properly. He's too manly to run like me ( short tiny strides) and he keeps running too hard, and at first it was horrendous shin splints, ( swelling, pain) and NOW, he bent over to dry his feet out of the shower yesterday, and got a severe muscle spasm in his back. He's killing me. I am afraid to wait for him because I am afraid it will hault my progress. What's a good wife to do here? This is TWICE now that I am sidelined with HIS injuries. Would you not think that he would realize that " Hey it's not working my way, and maybe I need to listen to ALL the folks who have been running awhile? UGGHHH

Anway, guess that technically makes me a week 5'er as well...

Lswife,
My husband and I watched the last half of the NOVA show last night too! That is what helped me realize that it is about the food, too! But, the running part and the healthy benefits that come with it make it encouraging to continue this!

Legs felt very heavy and tired this morning on my W4D2. I felt like I was working harder than I have been.

Cheffy,
I think I would just continue without him. You can each do your own thing and still support each other. Actually, I haven't told my runner husband that I have started this. I just want to do it MY way!

Good luck.
