Re: Newbies: It is OK to WALK--Believe Me.
Nick, you're awesome.

But I do want to take a moment and say there is a time and a place for running so hard you see spots and your intestines feel like they're going to exit your body along with your lungs and spleen, each out of a different oriface.

Working on being a lifetime runner myself. What an awesome journey it's been so far.

Re: Newbies: It is OK to WALK--Believe Me.
Nick, just wanted to thank you for your posts. Not only do I read them, but I read them out loud to my husband. He is a pretty laid back guy and has taken a very gradual approach to running, but sometimes starts to feel that he runs too slow. He needs to hear your voice and is always encouraged by it.

I need to hear your voice to counter my lapses of patience. I thought I had geared up pretty slowly to run my first 1/2 marathon, but wound up with a hip flexor strain at the wrong time. Some might try plowing through and risking further injury, but I'd rather run and walk for years to come just like Long Run Nick!

Re: Newbies: It is OK to WALK--Believe Me.
Refreshing topic. I posted earlier today on the Tortoise thread taht I run sooo slow and walk more than half the time out there. I'm fine with that. I'm patient. I've started the C25K off and on for the past few months. Usually hot weather (not lack of motivation) keeping me from doing it. Whatever the excuse, weather is cooling down (Houston) and I am ready to work on my running. I'm on Week 3 where you run for 3 mins and then walk for 3 mins. During the 3 min run (more like a hopping walk for me) my HR gets to 190. I dont' see spots or anything, but my HR is always high. I repeated Week 2, I will repeat Week 3. I cannot physically run slower than I do. I can do an hour hard spin class and never go above 175. Can it be that the C25K program is even too hard for some people? ..even repeating weeks.

Heat will elevate your HR, so that's one factor. I would also guess that your start/stop relationship with running is another factor. If you train consistently, you will become more efficient. As that happens, you'll be able to run faster/further at the same HR. Consistency is key.

Re: Newbies: It is OK to WALK--Believe Me.
Thanks Nick!
I started the C25K in May- I'm 40, about 20 lbs overwieght and in bad shape before I started. I made the distance on the C25K but never the time. My pace is between 13-14 min/mile.

About a month ago my 10yo son wanted to "run" with me so I set out first to set the pace and then he followed. I was mortified when I turned around and he was WALKING! It was so embarrassing. My friends and neighbors say that they see me jogging around town, I had no idea I was that slow! well, I've been too discouraged and embarrassed to get back out there. The frosting on the cake was a day later when one of my neighbors said that her husband makes comments about people that he thinks "really shouldn't be running"

After reading your post- I think its time to get back out there- even if I am "slogging"

Walking is cool. I walk. I'm cool.

Get away from your current insanity and refocus yourself to your goal and get your 20 pounds of saved up energy out there and run/walk and remember:

It just doesn't matter![/URL" target="_blank">

Re: Newbies: It is OK to WALK--Believe Me.
contempory4me, I run slower than you. One day this week I averaged 17/min miles! Usually I'm at about a 15/min/mile. But you know what? I started running with the C25K program in July. I thought I would die running for 60 seconds. I couldn't believe it when I actually ran 3 minutes.
And today, 4 months later, I ran 5 miles. It took me 1:16:48 but I ran it. I walked twice to take a drink of water but I really didn't need to walk because I was tired. I just haven't mastered the art of drinking and running
I'm not trying to get faster, although that would be a plus, I'm trying to build up my endurance without stressing my body. I managed to run all 5 miles under my desired HR and each mile was a little faster than the previous.

My point is, you're doing fine! I've run two 5K's and everyone passed me. The 70 year old men, the families pushing jogging strollers, the speed walkers, the 10 year old children.............I could go on and on. But I finished. I would never, ever have dreamed I could finish a 5K.
Oh, one other thing. I appear to be incredibly fit. No one believes I run as slow as I do. I've been working out for years, lifting weights, doing the eliptical. I am at my ideal weight, low body fat, blah, blah, blah. I still run slow. I don't know why, I just suck at running, lol. There have been plenty of women, weighing a lot more than me, who passed me in these 5K's. You say you're 20 lbs overweight and you run faster than me. There is no reason for you to be embarrassed about running. If anyone should be embarrassed it should be me. But I'm not embarrassed.
Yeah, I run slow but I'm doing the best I can. And the people who make comments about how slow I am are not out there running. They're sitting on their fat @ss, knowing they should be exercising. They want to put me down so they feel better about themselves.

Whew. Rant over. I get carried away sometimes

Btw, I've never seen Meatballs. Did they win the game? I know. It just doesn't matter

Re: Newbies: It is OK to WALK--Believe Me.
I read this around the time I first started c25k. It really helped me especially when I got frustrated because I needed to repeat week 3.

Thanks so much LRN.
