Re: New Runner
A group is a good idea, have you looked at running clubs in your area? Most have different fitness levels--and can give you encouragement.

I forced myself to go a little further every time. Then, I walked. Then, I ran a little further the next time. Then, I walked. I found it was a series of baby steps.

The most important thing: Don't Quit!

Re: New Runner

I agree with the other two replies. Here are some other suggestions:

  • Various running stores have group runs which you can meet runners of all levels or running experience
  • Gym - my gym had a running club and that is how i got started
  • Seek out some running clubs in your area (i have realized that they are everywhere)

I just started running last year and when I started talking about running to others, I was surprised with how many people I have known and did not know they were runners. So, just talk to people and you may find someone who wants to start but did not have anyone to run with or someone who is experienced and could help you with the running.

There are going to be some days that are tough and/or you do not feel like running but you have to stick to it. When I first joined the running club at my gym we had speed workouts on Wednesdays. In the beginning, I did not want to go because it was too difficult and I would pray that it would rain so it would be cancelled. But, i stuck to it and after I ran my first 5k I was hooked! Now, I am training to run my first marathon in October.
