I discovered the ipod!

Okay, so I have resisted it all these years, did all of my marathon training w/o ipod or music of any kind. No one could understand how I could train w/o music. I always told them that music annoyed me while running, which it usually did. So for my 40th birthday my bff gives me an ipod. I didn't have the heart to tell her I really didnt' want one, and it was so cute and little and she had already downloaded some songs on it so I decided to give it a try. Her 14 year old daughter had to teach me how to use it. Something happened to me and technology when I hit 39.

OH MY GOD! HOW did I get through marathon training without this device??? I did 5 miles yesterday and I felt like I was floating! I had a blast...it was like a little party all by myself. I caught myself skipping at one point (I thought about Long Run Nick and his skipping advice and knew he would be proud!), and then one time my arms were in the air and I was twirling like Julie Andrews in Sound of Music. WHen I hit 5 miles I didn't want it to be over.

It was great getting to enjoy my cd's again...I had not listened to them in years! So, now I know what the buzz is all about. How fun was THAT? what a great run.

I love my Ipod, don't know how I could live without it anymore. Unfortunately having one brings up a new problem, at least for me. I have to keep finding new music to run to, it's a horrible predicament I'm in

LOL Tamara40!

Since we are close to the same age ( I'm 41) I got the New latest and greatest Ipod Nano from hubby for my birthday this past September, just after I started runnning, and I have NEVER looked back. I prefer to run to music because it takes my mind off of the miles and seems to really help with the breathing because I sing along with my ipod. There is a thread in the other forum about upbeat music to run to that I put my playlist in, ( it's hilarious because I am such an old school funk junkie) and I have listened to the same music since downloading it. I just rotate it to keep me surprised when i run. The songs were carefully selected to match a good running cadence for what I can do right now ( W6D2) and I boogie while I run and have a blast everytime.

It's awesome, and you will LOVE having your funky grooves to keep you running smooth.

Best,
Cheffy

iPod, glorified, transluscent plastic mp3 player?

I use a Sony Walkman phone/mp3/FM/pedometer/lap counter/etc.. that blows my friends iPod plastic.

There are also lots of great podcasts to listen to. Lots of free ones. I like to mix it up. It sure makes the time pass. I always tell my dh that no one would believe what music is on my ipod for someone who is my age...55...shhh don't tell.

I just saw on the Today show that music has been banned from alot of marathons now. Some runners are upset and trying to find ways to hide it so they can still listen.

I agree the Ipod is fantastic. Now the problem is all the downloads I need to buy. The music I enjoy is from the 70's and 80's, when I was buying records.

i agree with another poster... i listen to a lot of podcasts.. you can find them on itunes for free.. i listen to the "technology" ones... i find that i get lost in the podcast and before you know it i'm done with my workout....

weeelll then! I would need to reload a Shuffle every day!! I hate too many song repeats....soooo, I swiped my DH's ipod, classic cause he "borrowed' all his friends' CD collections to add to our music library.....now over 9,500 songs!! On ONE ipod!! .... so far.....You wouldn't believe what shuffle does for you!! (can you say: audio whiplash!! LOL!!) However, all are not necessarily 'running friendly' ~ depending on what you're doing w/them I have modified classifications in some arenas & then I sort by Genre + HUGE PLAYLISTS!! If I know in advance what I'm doing! sometimes I change my mind........massage/spa music is actually really good stuff for LSD! keeps me from picking up the speed too much, still in touch w/my body w/o going overboard....get to relax & enjoy the scenery w/o distractions....

& Tam ~ you're s'posed to do the "Rocky Dance" @ 5 miles

When I run with a friend, we talk. When I run alone, I love the company of Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp (remember when he was John Cougar?), REO Speedwagon, KISS, Boston, Bob Seger ("Running Against the Wind!") and other blasts from the past. My iPod is the next best thing to my running buddy.

Oh, hey Tam. Sorry - I read the title of your thread and I thought this was Al Gore's place. You just never know what he's going to invent or discover these days. I hear he's about to announce that he's discovered there's a great park in the middle of New York City with great running trails. Working on a name for it.

Sorry - a little punchy today. Lots going on. Have a great weekend and enjoy the soundtrack to your runs!

Hi Tamara! I love my i-pod for long runs. I'll be using it on the "barely getting through it" sections of my marathon. (Not the whole marathon, I do want to hear the spectators and enjoy being in the marathon~please don't lynch me!!). You're i-pod will open up a whole new type of running. It's great for the days I don't really want to go (most days lately, it's cold now; temps in the 50s in the morning). Knowing I get to rock out to music I want to hear (or a podcast) is awesome. NO KIDS MUSIC ALLOWED!!!!!

BTW, if I don't getwith you again, good luck with your marathon! Can't wait for your report.

Hi Tamara, Congrats on the new Ipod!! My B-Day ( 4-0 ) is Monday, and I"m just hoping my wife has taken all the hints I"ve been dropping about ipods!! I am so looking forward to running w/ music as I'm now getting in to longer runs. ( I'm up to 4 miles now ) I'm excited about the distance but it is getting harder to stay motivated to run as it is getting colder (40's), and it's getting darker, and my wife has not been running w/ me due to a stress fracture in her foot. She's bumming because she's waited over ten years for me to join her in fitness / running and now I"m running all the time and she can't. But anyways, I'm rambling now, so Have fun w/ the music.
