Re: Half Marathon trainers Nov 4th
Don't have time to read everything this morning, but just wanted to shout out to Monik. That sounds EXACTLY like my hip issue. Feels like there is a catch in it that will pop or work itself out, but it never does. I think that is the tendon swelling and rubbing against something else (in my non-medical opinion).

Be careful, because I tried running through it (long runs) and that's when it really got debilitating. I could not lift my knee up in front of me for several days, and walked with a limp for a few weeks after I pushed it. I rested it from running for 5 weeks, and am on some prescription anti-inflammatories now. I still have some pain, but it is MUCH better, and what little running I've done this week has not made it worse. When in doubt, rest or do some cross training that doesn't stress that area.

Oh, and RUN, JOE, RUN!

Hey, don't know if I can join your discussion but I am a beginner starting to run out in the Katy area and would like to do the 1/2M in Austin. Any suggestions from my fellow Texans? I have never done a marathon before and the last time I went for a run was about 6 years ago.

Sheesh, what is with all you Texans?! You make an Iowa girl feel all alone...

Carol - Thanks for the information! Wow sounds like it got really bad for you. I'll definitely listen to the hip then, I really don't want it to get to the point where it's debilitating. Thanks again!

Sorry Monnik!

joescoolagain: Thanks for the info! Can you tell me about how long it usually takes for someone to train for an event like that? Trying to get an understanding on training.

Re: Half Marathon trainers Nov 4th
Depends on your current fitness level. If you are very active and have good endurance it may be enough time! Being younger also helps!

However if you are just starting out, the training group I mention has like a 27 week plan. Its basically for adult beginners. But even within that there are different levels of training. So there are also many seasoned runners there too.

Hope that helps!

Re: Half Marathon trainers Nov 4th
Hey everyone. I am new to the marathon post thanks to joecool for pointing me in the right direction. I am training for my first 1/2 taking place in March 2008.

I am really not that experienced in running. I have been running for about a year now and my longest runs are never more than 6 miles so I realize I have a long way to go. I believe I have given myself enough time to commit to this race and I know I am going to finish it. I am not trying to do anything other than make it to the finish line so time isn't of great importance to me although I do not want to come in last if it can be helped.

I could use any advice or tips. Nice to meet everyone!!!

thanks for the warm welcome. yes, im trying the 1/2. ive done 5ks this year (walked them last year) and have been increasing mileage and long runs since summer. have been on the training schedule suggested by coolrunning, with some changes. (due to the fact that i have children/husband whose schedules i must follow first...). tomorrow i am up for 10. will be running on a trail...fun i think, because i love to hike. did 11 earlier this month, loved it.

hope you all get well soon--love is a battlefield, and we all love to run...haha

Freerunner, I forgot to say welcome. Even though you're another Texan, I'm still glad you're on the thread.

Hopper - your fitness level sounds a lot like mine, except that I didn't start running until April. My long run is up to 6 miles (when I'm healthy) and I'm training for a HM in May.

Glad to see the new members!

Re: Half Marathon trainers Nov 4th
The group keeps growing!
Welcome to Hopper, Misswendy and Freerunner.

Just a brief note, my new clinic started early to allow graduates to run the Chilly Half in Burlington in March. I am not going to do that one as I hate cold weather, early March can be nasty in Ontario. I am also not doing the 30km Around the Bay in Hamilton in late March, for the same reason...
Anyway our first group run was only 4kms, about2.5 miles, but we cranked it out in 22 minutes, so there are some quickish people in the group, many have done one or more events at this distance and are aiming for times around 1:40, so I am the old, slow guy in the group I think!
The weekly mileages seem very low, below 30 kilometers for the first 10 weeks or so, I have been running 40-50kms, so will do a longer run on Saturday to keep up the base I have built.
All for now except.......GO JOE!
