mr I - yup official target!! Very excited about it!! I'm not really sure how to proceed. But I just realized that it means I don't need to start official training till June/July so what do I do between March (half) and then? should I try to find a closer marathon??

Erika, I assume you run with some sort of gloves now?

You have enough Boomers kissing your whatee, including Tet.

What you need is a friend like me who will keep you in line when you need it, and give you love and support when you need that.

Don't we all, dear fren, don't we all.

Yes, I've been wearing gloves for awhile now... I have several pairs, and glove liners that I wear inside a lighter pair of mitts before I go on to the heavier mitts. The double layers for the hands are good because I do heat up and get sweaty, so it's nice to peel off the top layer after awhile. I learned long ago not to peel off last layer (hands and elsewhere) cuz it's hard to put it back on when the inevitable chill sets in...

What kind of weekly mileage do you want to be doing when your start your official training cycle? You'll want to be doing that distance for a good three weeks so you'll want to have acheived that distance by early June, hold it there for three weeks and then start your buldup in Late June/early July.

Right now, I would say you have two really good options. The first would be to find a HM training schedule to follow that will prep you for your half. Complete that, race your half, then use that as a springboard for a steady buildup to your training schedule.

The second option would be simply to run with a really loose framework. Some do well with this, others don't. Basically run longer once per week and run fast (probably tempo) or run hills once per week. Do the rest just as normal off the shelf training runs. Increase your mileage steadily and easily. See if you could get your long runs up to the 15-16 mile mark for your half. You can do one on a lot less, but at that distance you'll be super prepared come race day.

That's my $.02.

6 miles this morning. My achiles is still buggin me. it's not getting worse and it evens out when I run, but it just won't go away. I'm gonna do the ice and stretch thing and see how that goes.

Re: Marathon Trainers:Week 11/04/2007
So I start reading the morning paper this morning and on the front page is a story on Frontier Airlines cutting flights because of fuel costs. Okay, makes sense so far. I continue to read about how all the flights from Memphis to Orlando are being cancelled begining the first week in January. WHAT? I bought my plane tickets two months ago for Orlando (Disney Marathon) for the second week of January. I called the customer service number, but they are on mountain time and no one is there yet. I hate this shlt. Just another headache now, changing car rental reservations, hotel reservations (maybe), child care issues, work scheduling, etc. I thought I was ahead of the game taking care of it early so I wouldn't have to worry about things like this. Good Morning to all.

Gee Nick, that sucks. Hope you can get things rearranged soon... but make sure they really did cancel your flight!

Rest day today, but it's too nice not to get out and do something. So I'll go for a walk at lunchtime...

Entered the Seattle Marathon yesterday... 11/25. Didn't have anything going on that weekend anyway...

Re: Marathon Trainers:Week 11/04/2007
hey gang.

taking today off, did 6 yesterday with speedwork on 2 800 meter sections. havent run fast in a loooong time and i felt it.

had a mammoth hill after that and man, i could feel it, but no soreness today, so thats good.

gonna try for 20 tomorrow. doubt i can run the entire way so i am going to try running 2 miles then walking 90 seconds from the start. my coworker runs about a 4 hour marathon and does that on all his long runs, so i guess it cant hurt to try, esp since im really not in shape for 20.

i just need to get the distance in cause im still contemplating a 50k on early december.

gonna run at out at hodges, which burned big time, so it should be interesting to see what it looks like.

Re: Marathon Trainers:Week 11/04/2007
Sorry to hear that, Nick. I'm afraid it will get all too common as the high oil price makes its way to the pump (airplane and otherwise).

Not sure about Seattle, Evan. Sounds hilly I'm going to let my training progress for another month before I commit to the National in March. Thinking about doing the half to pace a friend instead of the full.

Good luck on the 20, Salathe.

Did a 6 at MP yesterday (3 six milers this week but no long run). May go for an easy 4 later this afternoon when it warms up.

Easy miles to all...

Re: Marathon Trainers:Week 11/04/2007
Long week, no post. Ran 10k race this morning and was very interesting. I signed up and went to the course it was ran on the past two years getting there at 7:30am. No one was there. The course was changed and after getting directions from DW I drove back over to the new course which was within 5 miles of my house, just making the start. Ended up with a PR on a hilly course in a self timed 46:56. First 3-miles were self-timed in 23:19 so it was close to even split. 1st place and only place in the 45-49yo age group but I'll still spend the gift certificate to the local running store.

Re: Marathon Trainers:Week 11/04/2007
nice job pace! yer an animal!

i got my 20 in this morning. at mile 14 i thought i was going to get 22. at mile 17 it was apparent that wasnt going to happen. last three were tough. did it at 9:59 pace, which was faster than i wanted, but it just worked out that way. except for the last three miles, my splits were pretty even, except for huge hill i ran three times, that got progressively slower. i took the strategy of run two miles then walk 1 minute. seemed to work as two weeks ago I did 16 at 10:11 and this mornings 20 felt better all around.

have a great weekend everyone!

Re: Marathon Trainers:Week 11/04/2007
bugs, they told me today that the flights are not going to be cut until jan 16th. since i leave on the 12th, they said i will still fly with them on the going part of the trip, but they are going to make a reservation with another airline for the return home. i think i would rather them book me on another airline for the trip there too, but that's not an option. who's to say that last minute they don't decide to cut the flights a week earlier and then i am up a creek? we'll see what happens.

in other news i did 16 miles today, but stopped for about a minute and a half every four miles for water and light stretching. i felt pretty good until the last two miles. i did stop my watch while i was stopped though and i held a 9:55 pace. i am going to run a half in three weeks and the marathon is 6 weeks after that.

Re: Marathon Trainers:Week 11/04/2007
Club tri today. The final splits aren't in yet but pleased with the effort today. Expected to do 26 minutes for the half mile swim, and wound up with 17: 38. Still one of the last out of the water, but happy with the result.

The course was open so we had to wait at stoplights on the bike and run.
