***Mile Loggers*** Week of November 5th

Happy Monday!
This group of mile loggers started the C25K program somewhere in the past few months, and we are staggered anywhere throughout the program. Some are in the last two weeks, and some are brandy ol new. :-)
Please feel free to jump in, be kept accountable and add to the motivational atmosphere. If you don't know how to start, begin by just posting about your run for that day!
Join us!

My update - still no running - but only a few more days and then I'm back... Sorry I wasn't around this week guys - we've decided that we need to move and in the past 4-5 days we researched/saw and signed for a new apartment! ahh!!

I'm going to catch up on posts from the other thread today!

Hey guys,
so I did my first run of week 3 yesterday, and I did it at a local highschool track. the first 2 weeks seemed pretty easy, but man running for 3 minutes straight was really hard! I pushed through it, but I did it with my head rolled back looking straight up into the sky with one or both eyes closed haha! maybe theres something about being at the track that made it tougher, or more boring. I figured since a track is flat, and I usually jog/walk in my hilly neighborhood, that a track would be easier. tomorrow I'm going to do it again and hopefully it will be easier. how are all of you doing with running in the cold weather? does anyone else in here live in new england like me or in a colder region?

Happy Monday - Elections tomorrow! Since we were out of the States for so long I am stunned at how negative and brutal these campaigns have gotten. They never used to be this bad. All they do here in VA is trash each other and pollute our streets with thousands of these stupid signs.

I tried to run on Sat and couldn't push through it. I really felt my confidence hit a new low and I was getting very worried that I couldn't run anymore. I know most of it is mental so I decided to re-group and go back to W6 and do the 5/8/5 min runs. It is nice to have permission to walk. My legs were killing me but my breathing was good. Wed is two 10 min runs and then back to no breaks. I think this is a good starting place for me.

Deadman - Welcome. I suggest you sign up for a 5K right away. Knowing you have to run a race to keep you on track may help with the motivation! If that doesn't work - GET ON THAT TREADMILL!

Doc - we are in VA so it was mid 40's by the time I went out this morning. It will get colder so I guess I will just layer. I don't mind the cold - it is the hot humid summer that kills me.

Dober - That is an awesome time! Congratulations. After this week I hope to start the OHR too.

Katie - I didn't understand. Did you move already or just find the new apartment?

lml - are you going to go back a week or try to jump right back in?

jb - I used to get migraines which we linked to the pill. When I stopped taking it, the headaches stopped. Now I wonder if my hormones are just getting wacky due to age.

NuGurl - I am still in awe over 45 pounds. You must look amazing. Are you buying new clothes or holding out for that smaller size?

Hi Katie, good to see you're still around! And even better that you'll be back to running soon! Congrats on finding a new place--that's exciting!

eyedocguy, I'm in north-central Indiana, and we've been having frost lately. I did C25k on a treadmill, but am now doing some of my running outdoors. I like our hs track because I run about 5 a.m., and don't have to worry about the track surface in the dark, and it's cushier than pavement or concrete. It's also easy to measure your distance. But, it does get boring! I guess that's what mp3 players are for.

Having said that, I confess to wimping out on the track and using the treadmill today. When I woke up at 4:30 and heard the wind howling, I thought, nope. Wed. is supposed to be even colder (chance of snow), so it will probably be the end of the week before I make it back outdoors. I have decided to do what feels appropriate at the time, and not beat myself up about it.

DipMom--I was typing while you were posting so missed your comments. Glad to see you're back to running. and lml, the hip must be better? (I probably should read the rest of the last thread!)

Happy running to all!

Okay, I did go back and read the rest of the other thread. Dobie--congrats!! That is an awesome time! When's the next race?

lml, I had read somewhere about that race on the interstate, and thought it sounded kinda fun... but I'm not there yet. Still can't run a whole 3 miles, and I really don't want to do a race until I can. Maybe next spring/summer--when I've lost as much weight as NuGirl (you ROCK!)?

lml - I heard they were also doing a bike ride on the freeway before it opens. We will be out of town again, so we will miss it, but it would have been fun. I'm so anxious for that stretch to open. Since we drive to Michigan a lot, it will be nice to be able to just head south and hit I-80. I'm glad the elliptical is working for you. You'll be back running soon.

deadmanwalking - Welcome! If we can do it, you can, too! I'm 50 and had trouble running for 60 seconds in week 1. Now I can run 30 minutes! The program works. The alternative is sitting on the couch, gaining weight, perhaps developing diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholestrol, and a host of other health problems. Need more motivation?

Katie - our ever present cheerleader! Good to have you back. When do you move?

eyedocguy - good for you for pushing through. It does get easier. As far as running in the cold, I'm wimping out. I've moved to the treadmill in my basement - partly because of the cold and partly because I want to control my speed. I'm 35 miles west of Chicago, so the cold is definitely coming in!

DipMom - those 3 day headaches really take a toll on your body, so don't get discouraged. You'll get back into the running. Nothing wrong with moving back a few weeks - it sure beats sitting on the couch and doing nothing!

macd - its in the 50s here now, but supposed to drop steadily throughout the day, so we may be on the treadmill for awhile!
By the way, I can't run the whole 5k yet, either.

My update - I ran 30 minutes on the treadmill this morning and had to slow down to keep my HR average down. My knee is slightly swollen and I babied it this weekend, but now decided to keep moving and just ice it when I am done. A friend who is a physical therapist was over yesterday and she made some suggestions for machines to use at the club to strenghthen my quads without aggravating the knee, so I started that this morning. Also walked about 2 miles yesterday just to look at the changing leaves. With the wind today, they may be gone soon.

Happy running!

Hi everyone. Thanks for all the compliments. I had to buy all new clothes and even some shoes, I never thought you lost weight in your feet but you do LOL. But it is all worth it, I love it, It feels so good to go clothes shopping now, I have another 15 -20 more to go, Hopefully by this summer it will be gone off my body ": )..

Katie glad to hear you will be running again soon. Are you going to start where you left off or are you going to repeat a week? I'm excited for you and proud of you girl. you held out and made sure you healed first. Great job. : )
Good luck with your new apartment.

eyedocguy, Great job with your 3 min run, remember most of this is mental, just keep saying I can do it and you will.
I live in NJ. It is getting colder here also, not as cold as New Eng. yet but at night it gets pretty cold. I just bought a head band and pair of gloves, there are a few more things I need to get but they are pretty expensive, I checked out underarmour running clothes and jackets they are pretty expensive, so im looking for something that works as good but is a little cheaper.

Dipmom, I agree with you regarding the elections, they trash each other real bad.
You mentioned your legs hurt I was wondering if you tried strength training for your legs to help them feel stronger for your runs. If you haven't I suggest you do it helps me big time. Also nothing wrong with going back in weeks at least your not quitting your still moving and running and there is nothing wrong with stopping for a walk brake, if you need to walk a little so walk that doesn't mean your not a runner any more cause you walked a little. You are a runner forever.: )

macd, Nothing wrong with running on a treadmill, at least your running and not staying in bed sleeping. I don't blame you for not going out into that cold weather. : )

Thanks for the compliment im sure you will lose a lot of weight by the summer. : )

We can do this yes we can : )

jb, hi can you tell me what the physical therapist suggested you do to strenghthen your quads without aggravating the knee?
I also have a bad knee. I have arthritis in it. : (

Maria - she said to be careful with squats or lunges - you can still do them, but don't go down very low. Absolutely avoid the machine where you sit and bring just the lower part of your leg up with the weight over the top of your foot - sorry, I don't know what that is called, but she said that puts a tremendous amount of pressure on your knee. The one she really recommended for now is one where you stand with your back to the machine. There is some kind of boot type thing that fits over your foot and is attached to a weight plate behind you. You do a straight leg kick forward - kind of like kicking a soccer ball. Next time I'm there I'll look and see if I can get a name off of the machine, because I don't know if this explanation will really help. Also, bicycling builds your quads. Keep the gear at a level where you can spin about 80-90 rpm. Also drinking lots of water helps keep the joints lubricated. Hope this helps.

Hi, this looks like a place where I could fit in. I'm in my 50's and started the program last month. I am doing the program on the treadmill. I completely messed up D2 of W4 yesterday because my body was exhausted when I started. D1 of W4 was 2 days prior and I was able to complete the first 5 minute run but only could manage 3 of the second 5 minute run. My theory is because on the in-between day I went outside and challenged myself with a run/walk that wasn't structured. I just ran until I couldn't, recovered and then ran again, this went on for 4 miles. Because this was really the first time I ran outside (which was harder for me) I couldn't go very far before getting out of breath. I just didn't realize how much of a toll 3 days in a row had on this old body of mine....plus with the time change messing with my sleep. That's all my excuses so no more whining. So I am starting D1 of W4 over tomorrow.

This is the first time in my life that I attempted running. I really want to do this for myself. Since April of this year, I lost close to 40 pounds and feel terrific but now I want more. I have been walking for about 4 months now, anywhere from 3 - 4 miles a day and I figured that running is the next step. So far I am really enjoy this adventure and becoming a part of the running world.

Welcome Barb! From what I've read, there is a big diffference between treadmill and outside due to wiind, harder outside surfaces, etc. I'm in the same boat you are - I'm becoming addicted to this and want to run every day. However, that is the easiest way to hurt yourself. Your body needs the recovery days. My advice is to slow down - if you can't carry on a conversation you are going too fast. And follow the program to avoid injury. You may want to check out Long Running Nick's commentary - if you are doing this for the rest of your life, there is no hurry in the first few months to overdo it. Good luck!

yeah I will definitely have to push through the tough runs and the cool weather. I don't have a treadmill at home so I have to deal with the cold. a
nd I have to finish the program by new years day.... I made a bet with a friend and she came up with an idea that I'm regretting.... the wager is that if I can't run a 5K by new years day, I have to do my last training run or whatever I last worked up to, totally naked... and she gets to pick what place and time of day I have to do it. sigh.... more motivation for training!
