One Hour Runner - Knees are starting to ache

Long story short, I've never been a runner before the past year or so. In September of 2006 I started the Couch to 5K plan after having spent several months building up a good cardio base doing other things.

I've run several 5Ks this year, and usually ran about 30 minutes at a time.

I'm just starting Week 8 of One Hour Runner. I don't think I'm running too fast, and I've built up slowly to this, so I'm not sure why my knees are a bit stiff and achy lately. I don't have a very definitive pain. Just some...well, soreness and achiness.

Does this tend to happen when you increase mileage?

I am a bit overweight, but not much, and working on losing those last stubborn 10 pounds. I also take martial arts, go to a Spinning class, and take Japanese weapons classes. None of those things seem to cause any problems, and neither did running until recently.

I don't have marathon aspirations. I just want to work up to a 10K!

Thanks in advance!

Tell us about your shoes - where did you get them, and how many miles do you have on them?

Knee problems in runners are frequently caused by weak quads (because your quads stabilize your knees, and running uses your hamstrings). Try biking, squats and lunges to strengthen them.

Yes, increasing mileage can cause injury, but it sounds as if you've been taking it slow, which is what's prescribed for avoiding that.

I have had some similar issues and have been running since October 2006. I run about 6 miles per night 5-6 nights per week. I agree with the response from lontach, please check to ensure you have the correct shoes. I switched shoes based on what a running specialty store recommended and it helped some.

I'm now at the point of increasing my stretching dramatically and began quad exercises. I still have achy knees but they are improving.
