Intro and my heel hurts...HELP!!!!

Hi,
I am into my 3rd year of running. I train horses in the sport of dressage and began running at 51 years old to help my stamina and fitness. Now, running has become a passion of its own! I do not race, but have stayed a short distance runner, doing 3 miles for the last year. I decided its too easy, and even tho I keep going faster, etc...I went up to 4 miles. Then within a week of that, 4 1/2. I decided to go up to 5 miles and just stay there for awhile.
All of a sudden, I have sore heels! So, I ran every other day and have maintained ok. But last night WHILE I was running, as I entered my last 1/2 mile, my right heel really started hurting, which is odd. The pain has not been really while running or after a long walk, only after sitting, or sleeping. sigh. I finished my run, but now it is really hurting. What have I done? What do I do? Any ideas would be extremely appreciated. I do not have other friends that run, and don't actually know much about it!! However, I am beginning to read and assume I have plantar fasciitis.

did you go from 3 miles 3x a week to 4 miles 3x a week?? what did your increase look like?

I'm thinking you might have done too much too fast...

Other than that though I have no knowledge or ideas about heel pain.

Good luck in finding remedies!

I think you are right. I went from 3 miles, 4 X week...to 4 miles 4 x week. I have been reading here, and I guess I should not have added a whole mile, then IMMEDIATELY another 1/4 mile.

Yeah...might be PF. But PF is usually just a bit forward of the heel. Do you experience pain when you take your first steps in the morning? What condition are your running shoes in?

ForceD, yes, its in the front of the heel, and really bad after sitting for a long time, better when I walk a while.

Cat, thanks for the stretch, I can do that here at work. I am going to try taping too. I looked up a good way to tape it.
For the question of my shoes, I am afraid to say, I honestly don't know when they are worn out. I used my first pair for two years, and this pair for the last year or so, a little bit more. I run 4 times a week, and have not had any lapses in my running. My shoes seem ok. I use Nike Air pegasus shoes. How long should I use them?

I was thinking your shoes need to be looked into...you should be changing your shoes every 500 miles or so.

Yep, that's plantar fasciitis.

Laz22,
I think you are right! I got another email from someone, that changes his shoes every 300 miles. I think I might be way way negligent on this! They seem fine, of course to look at.
But it is time according to you guys!
I am hopeful again, thank you!!!!
