Well, I did my first real "cold" run last night. 4 miles. Here's what I learned. #1. Don't forget the gloves. ( I did )
#2. Don't forget daylight savings time.( Thank god I threw on a reflective vest at the last minute )
#3. Bring a flashlight. ( I didn't )

Other than the cold hands, and darkness it was a good run. I think next time I'll be more prepared. TTYL

Having lived in Pennsylvania for the first 33 years of my life, one would think I am somehow toughened up and ready for the change of seasons. Well, after having spent my first year in South Carolina, I have concluded that my blood has officially thinned out.

Sad.

I have NO cold running gear, and I know I need it. Sakes. $50+ for a long sleeve shirt, who knows how much for pants. It's a conspiracy I tell you! LOL

Be groovy!
Dan

I've lived in Cleveland for all of my 27 years. My blood seems to thin out every summer! I went out again yesterday after work and ran another 2.25 miles for a grand total of 3.75 for the day! I think I'm going to run again tonight. I really kind of enjoyed it in the cooler weather!

It's all about layering and there's something kind of cool about running when it's that cold--invigorating and you kind of feel proud of yourself. I can't say I look very fashionable when I'm out there, but I don't care.

Having said that, there are days when having access to a TM to run really feels OK. I try to alternate TM and outdoor running in the winter.

Well today was the first day out since Sunday when I screwed up my back, woke up at 5:30 felt good so I donned my new fashionable cold weather gear and did my three. First real frost of the year and I love it, normally I sweat like a horse but by half way through I had the hat off, the gloves in the pockets and the zip half way down Cold is nice.
Of course my back is revolting on me now LOL

Cheers
Tim

If you want to run outside, get a ski mask. It will keep the air that is entering your lungs warm. Also, try long johns and under armor under your clothing for light but warm additions.

I've always hated running on treadmills. It gets so boring and ends up hurting my legs and messing up my stride.

Its not about keeping the air warm...you'd have to be out in REALLY (-) temps for the COLD to hurt your lungs...that 'burn' is caused by DRY air. Balaclava's and Ski Masks are great if you exhale out of your mouth, as that moisture tends to come back in. Or at least thats the way it seems to work for me.

I just recently started running and I've found the cold to be a bit of a problem. I have some lined pants and a longsleeve layer but I'll need to add some polypropolene and a mask as the cold dry air is killing my lungs. I have a gym membership and find I can run longer on the TM if for no other reason than it's easier on my knees. I was going to run a december 1st 5k but I think I'll keep training and hold off until spring.
