Re: Half marathon trainers week of Nov 10th
Morning Peeps! TGIF! Got down to 40F last night, this morning was 41F when I left the house. Will try and run 3 this afternoon. Anyone racing this weekend?

Peg - Let us know as soon as you know!

Kim - How are you this morning? You ready for that half?

Sheila - Pics! Oh, didn't do the spin class after all. I want to try it though, I've done it before a little over a year ago. It is tough but you can go at your own pace too.

Wbertha - Nice run! Does that treadmill shut off after so many minutes?

KathyWing - You'll get another chance with that thong on Turkey Day! Woohoo boy shorts! You running today? Oh and hot is better than cold!

Runjr - Good run! Don't know what to suggest with that traffic... maybe a beanie with a propeller? lol

Laurel - Glad you had a decent run this morning! Wow, 3 miles done already!

Thanks for all the welcomes--y'all are a great group!

I took the dogs for a 2-mile walk this morning, and found out when I got home that it was only 26 degrees. No wind, though, so it was comfortable once we got moving. They're Eskies so they love this weather.

Good luck to anyone who's racing this weekend, and happy running all!

Re: Half marathon trainers week of Nov 10th
ok, ok... i'll get it checked!! i talked with my friend (who's a nurse) last night and she said it sounded like bursitis(sp?) It's funny - everyone I talk to about it has a different diagnosis. Clearly I need to see a doc to get it checked out.

My insurance is great, so I'll go straight to a sports medicine orthopedic doc. That way they'll be less inclined to say "No more running for you."

TGIF, everyone!

Today is my oldest DD's 14th birthday. How can it be that I have a kid that old?!?!

Re: Half marathon trainers week of Nov 10th
Good morning all.

I couldn't get my butt out of bed this morning so I'll do my 30 min run this afternoon. Yeah I like it cold out! This will be my first FULL winter of running. I began running last February. I think my 'perfect' temps are in the upper 40's to low 50's. I think I'll have to wait awhile to get back to those.

runjr, I run most of my runs in the early morning between 4-6am. There's not much traffic in Mayville. Still I'm very cautious with traffic. Better to be safe than sorry!

Welcome NC Sunshine, good luck on your 1/2 tomorrow!

noob, some runs can be like that. I run different routes all the time. I'll rarely run the same route twice in the same week. I use the training journal over on Runners World's site, and map my routes before I go out. Different routes keep it interesting for me.

Joe & Peg, take it easy on your runs!

Laurel, great run! My knees have been bothering me that last week or so. I'm going to try my extra pair of shoes the rest of this week to see if that's the problem.

macd, Yeah! Another cold lover

Get well everyone with injuries, everyone else have a great run today!

Re: Half marathon trainers week of Nov 10th
Morning All,

I'm happy it's Friday. Took the day off to get everything ready for tomorrow. The run is about 2 hours east of where I am. Traveling with a group of ladies down this afternoon. We're going to make it a ladies weekend with the race being the excuse to do so. The temp for the start will be around 40F. I'm not fond of running when it's that cold. I can't ever get the layers right. Either I'm too cold or I'm burning the h#ll up. I'm going to go with less tomorrow as it's supposed to warm up to the 50s. Bit nervous, probably won't sleep much tonight.

I am very impressed with everyone who got up this morning and worked out. It's such a wonderful feeling when you're done knowing you've got the rest of the day to do what you want without having try and figure out when you're going to exercise.

Thanks to everyone for the "well wishes". It'll be Monday before I can let everyone know how well I did or didn't.

Take care. Enjoy your weekend.

Be SAFE!

Re: Half marathon trainers week of Nov 10th
ADVICE WANTED...PLEASE!

So, I've been taking a rest day between runs - due to the knee(IT Band?).

Problem is...now I'm off schedule with my running buddy & I can't figure out how to make the math work.

So, I need your HELP!

Prior to this week, when we each flew solo, we were running Mon-Wed-Fri together. OK, so I like to do my long run over the weekend. Problem is this - if I run Friday & then schedule LONG run for the next day (Sat.), I'm concerned about running out of steam & hurting the knee like I did 2 weeks ago.

So, last weekend was better, I ran long on Sunday - after a rest day on Sat. & took a rest on Mon. BUT, that put me off schedule for the weekdays...

My main question is this - PHYSICALLY, does it make more sense to run either:

1.) Mon, Wed, Fri, LONG SAT?? - rest Sun - run Mon (repeat)
-OR-
2.) Mon, Wed, Fri, rest Sat - LONG SUN?? - run Mon (repeat)
-OR-
3.) NEITHER - need rest day in between runs
-OR-
4.) OTHER - add your own suggestion!

How many of you think it's better to take the rest day PRIOR to the long run versus AFTER the long run? (or neither, or any other suggestions you have are much appreciated!)

Thanks in advance for both your time & advice!

Re: Half marathon trainers week of Nov 10th
Hi all!
Laurel, my preference would be to run first, then rest afterwards, not saying that's best for you, but it makes sense to me.
Monnik, my daughter is 36, grandson is 11y.o., you're making me feel old saying stuff like that!
Kathy, you must live on a part of the planet that's close to the sun, we had a light dusting of snow overnight.
Sunshine, enjoy the race tomorrow, don't start out too fast, you want to look good in the finish line photo! And run across the line a couple of strides before you look down to check your watch!
Simon.

Re: Half marathon trainers week of Nov 10th
Just popping in at lunchtime...

Monnik - Let us know what that sports ortho running doc tells ya!

Kevin - I'm planning on running this afteroon too. Should be up around 70F when I get started. I seem to be developing a cough! Can't seem to shake it!

Kim - You know you're a runner when you take the day off to prepare for a race! We want a race report & pics! Plenty of pics! lol Have a safe trip!

Laurel - I usually run on MON/TUE/THU/SAT LSD is Saturday. Rest days are Sun,Wed,Fri. So not only do I rest before my long run but the day after too.

Re: Half marathon trainers week of Nov 10th
Laurel - do you run mornings, evenings or a combination?

How about doing something like M, W, F evening runs,Su morning - that way you get a day and a half either side of the long run?

No running for me tonight as still resting knee - it felt fine today walking to / from station, but hurt again as I ran across the road to avoid the car aiming for me... I'll see how it goes the weekend as to whether I get a run in, otherwise i'll skip to next week... It's due to rain all weekend so that may also be a deciding factor

I've got a week off work and planning to do some stuff round the house so hopefully plenty of time for running in amongst the DIY (moved house a couple of months ago)...

Happy running and enjoy the weekend!

Re: Half marathon trainers week of Nov 10th
Laurel,
I run everyday. When I do get a day off it's the day after my long run. My runs the day before my long run are usually only 30 min. and are easy. What am I saying... So far all my runs are easy!
Actually, looking at Cara's advice, that may be good too!

Joe- developing a cough eh? Must be all that warm weather running :->!

Re: Half marathon trainers week of Nov 10th
Laurel,
I have to work every other weekend so that really messes with my running schedule. I prefer to have a day of before and after my long run. But, my schedule being the way it is, if I do run on either of those days they are extra easy, usually with some walk breaks mixed in.

Re: Half marathon trainers week of Nov 10th
Hey guys. Well, the office manager told me that she has not had a chance to talk with the attorney about me and probably won't till next week. That's okay though.

Laurel - I prefer to have a rest day before and after a long run.

Joe - getting sick? this weather will do it. 85 one day and 40 the next. crazy huh?

Well I temped today for CenterPoint Energy executives. Pretty weird. I will be there again Mon-Thurs. Something to do anyway.

You guys have a good evening. I might have a few beers with the hubby.

Re: Half marathon trainers week of Nov 10th
Hot definitely beats cold any day. I would much rather face temps in the high 80's than the teens anytime.

Joe, the treadmill shuts off at 60 minutes which is another good reason to get my 5 mile time down to 60 minutes. However, in the mean time, I have found that I can restart the gym's treadmill in less than 15 seconds. (Hey, my running may not be fast but my fingers are. lol)

NCSunsihine, good luck this weekend. Waiting for a full race report.

Laurel, I always try to take a rest day before my LSD. Then the day after, I try to get in about 3 slow easy miles. This system works for me and seems to help alleviate any soreness or stiffness that I might have from the LSD. Then I take another rest day after these two runs.

Rest day for me today with a longish run tomorrow...distance to be determined.
