Marathon Trainers:Week 11/11/2007

Global warming isn't all bad: Short weather in MN today. 8 easy miles, followed by some light swimming, more drills than an actual workout.

Cash,
That's very fast swimming. Great work.

Bugs - shorts or not to shorts? I went for my long run saturday - 10 miles yeah baby!! and i saw many a people in shorts and a long sleeve while I was in tights and a long sleeve for the first 7 then short sleeve for the last 3. Am I wearing tights too early? It was in the 40's. My legs get really really cold and hurt to touch in that weather. Even with the tights. I find I have to come home from the run and take a super hot shower just to warm back up. Am I weird???

10 miles yesterday, fell good today. Rode a recombinant bike - I was sore so i stopped after 3 minutes.

I whipped out the tights today as well. I think I went for them too early as well. The computer said 33F outside but when I got out there, it felt too warm as well.

Tried to go an easy 10 but ran out of time and had to do a bit of speedwork for the last 2 to get back for church and only went 9. Very strange sensation. At an hour in, I felt like I was really only warmed up.

17 miles today in 2:27 at temps ranging from zero to 5 above. I had to stop and rearrange things a couple of times... can't find my balaclava so was using a fleece neck gaitor and it kept slipping down when I had it pulled up to warm my cheeks and chin. So I'd pull it up, go with it for awhile and it would slowly slide down. Stop to pull it up, go for awhile, etc. Got to be very annoying. And, after a couple hours of that the thing was frozen stiff. My plan was 18 miles, but at 17 I was right by DH's office where he was waiting for me and my face was so cold... I stopped and called it a day.

Bugs! So nice to have you running! Howd everything feel? I hear that MN is having some very nice temps for an Indian Summer sort of thing. I'd enjoy it while you can!

ShanGen, nice job on the 10 miler. Did you mean recumbent bike? That's what I have at home. Nice for cross training and it sure does work some different muscles than cross training!

As for tights, if they make your legs feel better, go for it. Nobody else's business, right? I've been wearing them since mid-September...

Cash, nice job on the swim for your tri. Sub 18...wow.

dgb2n - nice run!

erica - thank! good point it is my business if I want to wear tights!! maybe i just feel good looking in them! hehe And I did mean recumbent bike - spell checker was no help on that one! It felt ok and might be really nice the day after my long runs which is when i see it. Nice job on your run, I can't imagine how cold your cheeks must have been with that fleece slipping.

Ok 10K question it's a few weeks away but TP and I were talking about logistics of where to encourage loved ones to stand. And it got me thinking about the water station. There is a water station at the half way point. I normally don't stop for water until mile 5. So should I not do the water station in the race and just go for the whole thing and worry about water at the end?

Shorts???!!! BRRRRRRRRR....it must be colder in Michigan.
I did 6 in tights yesterday and needed a HOT shower when I got home to thaw myself out. maybe I'm just a wimp?

I'm running a little less these days...my left ankle and heel have been bothering me ever since my marathon at the beginning of October. Really stiff ankle in the morning and hard to step down on my foot. I hobble around for about 10 minutes and then it's fine for hte rest of the day (unless I wear heels like today and then it's sore by lunch).

The plan for a few weeks is to keep running 3-4 days a week and supplement with more elliptical and lots more weights. I used to love weight lifting and I had lots more muscle definition. I came up with a new circuit plan (with the help of a new book I bought) and i've been doing that for a few days. I'm unbelievably sore but it's a good sore. I think this might be what i need to drop those 10 stubborn pounds.

I'm also doing a lot of thinking abotu a spring marathon. I'm really having a hard time deciding whether or not I want to committ to training for one or if I want to just do the two halfs that I did last spring. The half is so much more manageable training-wise and I think it's actually my favorite distance...BUT...I have some major unfinished marathon business after the Chicago debacle. I"m pretty sure I could PR by at least an hour! Ugh..decisions, decisions. DH does NOT want me to train for a full during the school year. He says between my coaching, my grad classes and teaching there is no time for marathon training. He may be on to something.

Wow- that turned into quite the rant! Sorry about that!
So...Please vote: Should I
a. Run a spring marathon and beat my Chicago time
b. run two halfs this spring and then train for a fall full over the summer
c. run two halfs and then take a mini-break from running and try to have a baby (that's the other big issue...turning 30 in a few months and my poor mother is pretty sure that I'm never going to reproduce)

beaumont, I bet Bugs will cringe when she hears your foot story...
You sound like me with the weights, etc. I want to get back into that too and that's what I do in the winter. After Seattle it will be my main focus, while keeping a good running base, then start building up for Boston in mid-January or so. As for your plans, I don't think it's a good idea to commit to a marathon training plan--and hope to stick to it--if the rest of your life (work commitments, etc) has you pretty busy. Your DH is definitely onto something. The half-marathon is a much more manageable distance for training, and it'll keep your base up so doing a marathon later won't be such a stretch. As for the baby... well, do it for you and your DH, not your mom! But it's a good time, age-wise for you, so.... go with your heart on that one!

I'm heading to the gym soon... Women's Health had a good article on top trainers and some of their techniques and plans. I'm going to try a couple (but the good thing about them is you don't need gym equipment... a stability ball and some dumb bells and you're set!), but also get in some elliptical or stair master to work out some kinks from yesterday. It's been snowing alllllll day, light fluffy stuff.

Beaumont - I am having similar ankle issues. Mine predates the marathon by a few weeks. Mostly it's the achilles, but the ankle itself is pretty sore in the morning. Walking a bit loosens it up and it doesn't bother me when I run, but it's irritating because I don't know what it is and it won't go away. I don't look so good in high heels, though so that's not a problem.

I think you need to decide for yourself if you want to do the spring marathon. We tend to be a pretty biased bunch when it comes to such things and don't necessarily have your best interest in mind.

Rest day for me.

beaumont - I absolutely think hubby is on to something you sound like a busy woman! But then again only you know you. As far as kids if you aren't ready then you aren't ready. Certainly don't let mom guilt have a strong influence on that (I know easier said than done at times). You have to listen to you!!!

Mr. I - so i've been thinking about the advice and what path I would like to take. I think my goal for right now is to 1) get through 10K, 2) build up to 4 days a week for the half. I think I will make a long run schedule and then just fly off the cuff during the week with a steady increase in weekly mileage. I am doing that now and it seems ok, not perfect, but better then me trying to stick to a rigid schedule. 3) take the couple months in between half and M training to get up to 5 days a week and get a nice steady base. For M training I'm pretty sure i'll need to follow a more rigid plan but maybe not maybe by then I will have the weekly run thing figured out!

Haven't run since Sunday. Been out of work for 2 days with stomach issues. Had a rich in butter/oil weekend and maybe some tofurkey which sat out too long and it's been down hill. Grumble... Hopefully if I'm feeling better tomorrow I can get out get a nice run in.

Well, you've got to love the weather, at least

Based on Evan's last post, I think I'm good without tights for a while. Good thing it warmed up today to around 60. Got in an easy 5 with good heart rate control (9:17 pace with average HR of 140).

Back to Beaumont's predicament, I'd vote for b. 30 is the new 20 when it comes to havin babies. Have one when you're ready. If this is the year, go for it, otherwise, I'd do the marathon.

My wife was 37 when our last daughter was born. 35 seems to be the point where they start to mention more testing because of maternal age.

Hello Everyone!

I come with what I think may be a bit of bad news. :-(

When I finished my marathon I noticed my IT bands were both very sore on the outside of both knees. No biggie, it's just from running so long. Um NO! I have been trying my best to get up to a decent weekly mileage (15 last week) and my IT Bands still kill at about mile 2.
I took almost 2 solid weeks off following the marathon but I still haven't been able to shake the pain. I ran 2.5 LN and 2.5 tonight and they are still hurting especially the right one. My shoes have about 350 miles on them so I am going to retire them on Thursday but I gotta figure out what else I can do.

I have been stretching like CRAZY!!!! still not any better.

any thoughts?

Keep Striding!

James

Thanks for all the words of wisdom, guys! I know it is a decision only I can make and, of course, I'm nowhere closer to making it...although my ankle/foot may end up deciding. Today it started clicking whne I walk??!! What is that?? It doesn't hurt--it just makes a popping noise. Weird. We'll see.

James--I wonder if you just need more rest? I'm certainly no expert but I took more than two weeks to feel back up to snuff. Maybe your body is on vacation.

No run today..killer weight training circuit, though.

Greetings all,

I have decided to take the "hard earned and learned" lessons from the Tri-Cities (10/28) and apply them at Eugene (5/04). Anyone else plan to run this one?.

I debated on Seattle, but I really want to go through at least one more complete training cycle before my next marathon. Seattle would have only given me four weeks. Erika, didn't you post you were doing this one?

I ran a relatively pain free 35 miles last week, and will start to increase that gradually until I start my training program 12/16.

Since many think I'm crazy, perhaps I'll run Olympia too (on 5/18) and join the Maniacs. Anyone else thought of, or done that?

Keep your feet on the street.
Mark
