Between Fla and NC, I'd go with NC. I'm a New England native living in Fla for 4 yrs now and still not used to the heat, I'm miserable from May till late Oct/early Nov when it finally cools off a bit (makes running pretty tough too). Plus in NC you still have seasons. I miss seasons :-( And property there is pretty cheap right now. If I could convince my BF I'd consider moving there, or back to NE.
Good luck

I see alot of people saying NC but personally would suggest going a little further south to SC. NC is a great place, I live here close to the beach, and yes we have seasons but they are weird. Me and my wife were considering moving to SC before our kids came into the picture. Depending on which part of NC your training could consist of all flat, flat with hills, and mountains. Seasons are great early spring and fall is awesome. Wow! Now that I look at it I guess it ain't so bad here after all. As long as we can keep avoiding the hurricanes, (knock knock).

North Carolina! I'm fron the Durham/Chapel Hill area, so let me know if you've got questions. Someone who really loves city life wouldn't love central NC, but Durham and Chapel Hill have great health care and job opportunities, good bars and restaurants, and tons of rolling farmland surrounding for long weekend runs. The Carrboro/Chapel Hill area is very runner/biker friendly, although the coast and mountains are beautiful. Winters can get pretty chilly and summers brutal, but a lot of the time it's a happy medium with, yes, beautiful falls and springs. A lot of the area is right on the cusp between farmland/suburbia and a lot of development is happening, which means right now it offers a nice balance.

Or look a few miles west of there at Mobile, AL. Mobile and Baldwin counties have virtually no unemployment, especially for the trades people. Mobile has good diversity of things to do. Baldwin has the beaches if that is your schtick. Plus, lot's of flat places to run!

WOW! I llove all the responses. I have some new questions now.

To the NC supporters: What kind of winters do you have? Some snow? / No snow?
What's kind of chilly?

To the FL reps, I actually spent 2 years during high school in Clearwater, currently have relatives in or around Lutz and have a time share in Orlando so any of my leanings to the state are definatly west coast or central. We do have concerns about hurricanes though.

AZ,,How about the heat down there? Is it true that it's a dry heat? and does that really make it any more bearable? Is the climate comparable to say Las Vegas? Carol40, said there are 4 mild seasons? Does that mean snow?

I have been through or visited many of the other states listed here and all are beautiful. My wife has mentioned CA. a number of times as well but all I can think of are wildfires, mudslides, earthquakes and riots. ( sorry, I blame the media )

Lastly someone asked where I'm living now and that is in the Lakes Region ( central) New Hampshire. Yes, it's beautiful here too. White Mountains, lakes, farms and even a little ocean front. It boils down to the winters. Shovelling, freezing rain, ice, snow and cold! Plus relative to Melaniec and chuck43 comments of year round racing and such, we find that summers tend to be so short up here when trying to boat, bike (mc), run, bike, swim etc.and try to pick a few events to compete in. as it stands now I ended up running my first event in Las Vegas.

Well I certainly rambled away on that one. I'm sorry. Thanks again for all the input though. we'll keep ya posted.

Andy

Andyb~We lived in the Tampa Bay area twice; once for 4 years, once for 3. First time was the Clearwater side. Loved it!! But we rented then and had no kids. Do you have kids? The Pinellas county area doesn't excite us for schools. Maybe north of Clearwater. But keep in mind that homeowners insurance is HIGH!! In Hillsborough County (Tampa, Lutz, Brandon) it's also hit and miss with schools. Insurance is high again but the farther from water the better. Check for flood zones and AVOID THEM!! We loved Tampa. We lived in a north Tampa area called New Tampa. Traffic sucked but great central location to major highways, university, hospital, downtown, family and just over an hour to Disney World! We still own a townhouse there. You could always rent that come July!

Arizona was nice. We lived in the West Valley of Phoenix. Beautiful. I know it has grown quite a bit since we left. We liked being 2 hours from Tucson , Flagstaff, Prescott and Sedona. The people were friendly but the traffic sucked, especially for a west sider trying to go east for work. We lived and worked west side. From our friends still there, you can find a great deal on homes (same in FL). I recommend Surprise and Avondale. We liked Litchfield Park as well. Fun little winter festival there. Don't know about the schools there. No kids at the time.

NC has "bargain" property prices now. My dad and stepmom are headed there within a year. Charleston, SC is a wonderful place from what I hear. We have friends there as well. Haven't heard a bad thing yet.

As far as teh hurricane comment goes-every place you go has it's own natural hazard. CA has fires and droughts, landslides and earthquakes. FL and the entire Gulf and Atlantic coast has the hurricane issue. Northern states have the blizzard factor. I'd hate to be without power for days in freezing temps. The mid-west and plains have tornadoes. You just have to pick what you're more willing ot put up with if the time comes. When we lived on Guam I hated the quakes for lack of predictability but typhoons didn't bother me. So FL is fine to me. CA would drive me insane.

Good luck with your decision. We love moving too. For us, it's a job hazard but the change of scenery so frequently is great!

Ever thought of central/south Texas? July and Aug, our hottest months, tend to range from 90-100 degrees but early morning runs are no problem. I'm a newbie so I'm not familiar with all the athletic events around here, but I can tell you where to get some deelish margaritas! I live in San Antonio and about the only serious weather we get is ice once a year, if we're lucky. That's usually in Feb, although this year it came in Jan and they closed the city down for 2 days. woohoo! We don't worry about hurricanes, tornadoes, snow, etc. In fact, last time it snowed here was in 85. Around here, it's big news when the weather hits the teens. Our winters are typically 60-70 degrees. San Antonio is only an hour or so away from the purdy Texas hill county and about two hours from the beaches. Hubby lives for his weekend Harley rides thru the hill country. And let's not forget our NBA Champs - San Antonio Spurs! In case you're wondering, no I don't work for the chamber of commerce.

I've lived in San Antonio for 14 years. I currently live in Charlotte, NC. and have for the past 5.

I love either place. I prefer Charlotte.

The weather is generaly pretty reasonable. Although I too love the hill country of TX, it doesn't compare to the west NC mountains. 3 hours to the beach, mainly because of the roads. In TX it woud take 2 hours because of the pretty good highway system.

This area is a runner's paradise. You can race through streams in the mountains one weekend or catch a 5k each weekend in the local area. You can run flat areas east of town or hilly ones more west. Trails are abundant if that is what you like.

Winters here are definately more severe than those farther south, although no where near as bad as the DFW area. We have hard freezes in the mornings, but typically gets into the mid 40s to 50s during the afternoon -- perfect for long distance or speed training.

Summers can sometimes reach 100. More typically the afternoon temps are 85 to 95 degrees. If you catch early morning or dusk runs, the temps are bearable without the sun beating on you.

Only if we had bluebonnets in the spring...

I too live in the Raleigh/Chapel Hill area of NC. I've never lived anywhere else. It's beautiful here. The winters are mild and the summers are hot and humid. Snow is rare. Some years better than others. When we do get snow it typically isn't more than a 2-3 inches.

As previously mentioned you have the best of both worlds here. Central NC is 3 hours from the mountains and 3 hours from the coast. We have the best seafood around and the mountain sunsets will absolutely take your breath.

Come visit and see for yourself.

I live in Tucson AZ, and we do not have 4 seasons - its very different up north in Flag and Sedona. There is definitely snow in Flagstaff - there are ski resorts there. The year round climate is very mild. Down here in Tucson (and in Phoenix also) we have 2 seasons - Super Fvcking Hot, and Pleasant.
As far as a dry heat goes, we have a very wet monsoon season during the hottest month-month and a half of the year - and even when it isn't humid anything over 110 degrees (very common) really is unbearably hot - i don't care how dry it is. So, it is beautiful in AZ, but very different then anything you are used to. The northern towns are nice, but small. Phoenix and Tucson are fair sized cities, but not for the faint of heart. Come check it out in November (our best weather) and August (our worst) see what you think.

AndyB,

I'm in the Raleigh area of NC. My husband and I grew up here (Lexington and Littleton respectively), and we love these carolina blue skies. We lived in Indy for a few years, but the winters were not fun, to say the least.

Unlike you, we have kids and the school system is good, but getting crowded with all the folks moving here. Job market is good and so is housing. Winters are fairly mild ... a high in the 30's would be called brutal around here. Summers are definitely hot. This past summer had many 105 days, but many states did this year. Most years we get little snow, 2-3 inches total. But then there's the anomally like the winter of 2000 (or was it 2001) where we got 22 inches in 24 hours. We didn't the know to do! Of course that would be a lot for any state, but like I said, that was unheard of around here. We do get hurricanes sometimes, but at least you know they're coming, not like an earthquake. I'm not knocking the west coast by any means, I just hope to get a heads up.

We're about 2 hours from Wrightsville/Wilmington and about 3 hours from Ashville. This time of year is BEAUTIFUL along the Blue Ridge.

If you have any question, I'm sure any of us in the area would love to help.

Take care and happy running.

Gerri
