Diet and Fatigue

I started running in August of 2005 and ran for 8 months. During that time I was losing weight with weight watchers. I was doing the core plan which is basically very little processed foods, fat free dairy, lean meat, fruits and vegetables.
Then I quit it all...got distracted by my job and a man that I was dating.
Recently I have started again. I've only been back at it for about 3 weeks, though I changed my diet about a month ago.
This time my diet consists of ONLY fruits, vegetables, brown rice, legumes, nuts and seeds, and fish (very occasionally). I do not eat Meat (except fish), Dairy of any kind, wheat, sugar, anything processed, eggs etc.

I find that now I do not get nearly as fatigued during my runs as I used to and I have had no pain in my muscles at all. It seems like before I would have to push myself mentally the whole run just to finish. Also I have been able to get back up to 4 miles very quickly, ( I was running 5 miles x 4 times per week just before quitting)
I have to wonder if there is a correlation between the strictness of my diet and how awesome I am feeling.

Any thoughts?

Re: Diet and Fatigue
This is very interesting to me. If you care to give me the meal plan I would love to try this out. I am currently looking to slim down and get better runs in. I have trouble unless I have specifics. If you don't mind e-mailing me a list of your foods and how you eat them I will try it out and give you feed back.

Thanks for the great information. My e-mail is cherylhop27@yahoo.com

Re: Diet and Fatigue
I hope you take supplements. If your feeling tired on a new diet it could be normal. However have your crit, and hemoglobin tested to see if your anemic. At least get a baseline if you haven't had one.

Re: Diet and Fatigue
You've obviously found something that works for you. My thoughts are: GREAT! Stick with it.

I get shakey when doing vegan, and so do most of the other vegan people I know. I feel stronger, faster, more potent on a lean protein, complex carb rich diet.

Viva la difference! Whatever works, I say do it. Why worry about it?

Re: Diet and Fatigue
Like hopper31, I'm interested as well. I'm new to running but have been cycling for the last couple years and thought I was doing well with my diet. Within the last couple months I have given up meat too and feel wonderful but sometimes during runs I get fatigued. I don't know if I'm not eating enough those days because it doesn't happen all the time or if it's just because I'm new to running and I haven't cut out my cycling or weight training, so I could just need more rest time. I would love more info on your meal planning.

Re: Diet and Fatigue
I'm a vegetarian and do eat dairy. I can't imagine how I'd feel on a meat diet, as my vegetarianhood began at age six! Given that, for people who want to go veggie, I have some practical advice on things I discovered from trial and error:

There's no need to go supplement crazy, but a complete B vitamin complex, especially with B12, is pretty essential. Iron and calcium are good things, especially for runners (that'd be a lot of spinach!).

Just as far as getting protein in a variety of ways, the possibilities are extensive. But lentils are a great thing to slide into soup or pasta sauce, or to use as a base for a stir fry. In winter I make lentil soup by the gallon and freeze it: In a veggie broth, to taste, build a soup of sauteed onions, garlic, ginger and black pepper in a mixture of lentils, brown rice, peas, diced red peppers, and pureed spinach and carrots.

I got very overweight even as a vegetarian loading up on things like macaroni and cheese and buttery baked potatos. There are plenty of ways to eat like **** as a vegetarian and lots of less rigorous options to replace a few red-meat meals with yummy veggies. Even as a vegetarian with some reasons I believe strongly in, my advice is, if you love meat, don't try to give it up.

Re: Diet and Fatigue
Techgirl....I, too, am very interested in trying out your daily meal plan. I am starting back on the C25K plan this week after a seven-month hiatus from running due to a hip injury. I'm curious to see if I feel better and more energetic on your plan.

Thanks!

Re: Diet and Fatigue
I would love to se your meal plan as well, would you please send it to me. I've lost 20 lbs since July, I'm really close to being where I want to be but know that I still need to make some diet changes as well. I find that I get fatiqued once in awhile and then go on an eating binge.

Re: Diet and Fatigue
yes Jess!.

you've figured it out!
Now repeat after me.
"No Man should take away from my health or be responsible for leading me back to an empty diet. While he is responsible for wearing me out (wink, wink) he will not wear me down!"

I suggest you print out your own opening post and tape it to your mirror!
